Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Hi moretz: long time, no see. Van Bourgendien has the plants but they have a pretty mixed feedback in the Garden Watchdog.

I sometimes travel up to Greensboro or Winston or even all the way to Raleigh, so I may look you up the next trip up that way...

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

sounds great,

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I just heard back from Raintree again. They have G. tinctoria but not G. manicata. The only place I can find beside the above mentioned, has a high minimum order and I am not sure I want to do that right now. I need a few other things but I am not sure I need 720 other things. LOL

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

well if you dont want to order then thatis fine i can find them some where else but thxs for offering and helping
moretz

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I haven't given up. If I find a good supplier with reasonable prices, I'll certainly share the info or grab them up for us. I've been on a mission to get a few of these for a few years. LOL

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

well it looks like we will be paying at least 17.00 for one plant or more
oh well
thxs

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

If you don't have to just yet, don't. If you are afraid you will lose the plant otherwise, I guess you gotta go ahead. I have my last ditch, please help, email out and am waiting for an answer. LOL

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

youre waiting on an email about the gunnera?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Lead balloon. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz bonk!

Where did you decide to order from?

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

i havent, been looking to see who i might order from, every where i see though it will average out to about 17.00-20.00 for plant and shipping so not sure yet

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Going by the wholesale catalogues I have been looking at-wholesale price on them is right around $5 with retail prices listed in the $10-12 range. Most shipping I have seen is in the $7 range. You have to figure on the wholesale plants you are mostly getting a ball of roots that is meant to be potted, grown for about 2 months then sold as a 1-2 gallon perennial. I'm not trying to talk down, just explaining pricing and concept. :)

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

i dont want a root havent had luck with them i would rather have a plant, thxs

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Umm, they are plants, growing plants. What I was trying to explain is that wholesale plants are not meant to be sold they day they are received. The grower is supposed to pot them up to have a lush, impressive plant to sell. That is why they cost more retail. They have the money invested in the plant, shipping, dirt, pot and time to grow them on. If the sellers are paying about $5 for them, that is why you cannot find them for less than $10. Does this mean you won't want the ferns either?

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

when should I start the seed that DigGardening sent me? The last frost date here is May 10. Do I nick them, soak them?

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

badseed,
have you ordered the ferns yet? if not then i dont want them but if you have ordered then i will take them plmk
moretz

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I've already ordered them and paid for them but it's okay. People always want ostrich ferns and I can keep, trade or sell them. I'm not sure why you think you are going to receive full grown plants in the mail though without the foliage cut back.

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

well from some companies they dont have their foliage cut back exspecailly when you tell them not to send until may right?

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

anyone gonna help me with my questions?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Sorry wood. I got wrapped up in seeing how many I need to order and as an aside if the ferns I already bought are spoken for or not. LOL

As the stats say they could take up to a full year to sprout, I think I'd get a move on. My database says they take 14-60 days at 70-80 degrees, sown in peaty mix, covered with 1/16 the inch of same. There are no other special instructions listed. Hope that helps in some way. :)

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

eek! yes it helped. Do you have any spots left in the co-op to buy them?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Before anybody gets their boxers in a bunch, it wasn't a co-op. I was just going to buy extras and trade them for something of like value unless someone didn't have a trade of like value then they were just going to pay for them and I was going to get them wholesale. Only one person wrote and asked me to get them. The feedback above made me leary of buying from them and from what I saw their wholesale price wasn't even true wholesale. It was just a better price if you spent more. I have not killed myself to find them but did give it a valiant effort. The company I found with the very best price has a 10 tray minimum of mix and match, all has to be water plants and the minimum price for the least expensive things would put me at $423 including shipping. OUCH! It would be great if I wanted 100 Gunnera which I don't and honestly I didn't really see anything else that made me want to spend that much to get this one plant. LOL At this point I may either go without getting the plant(s) or just buy a couple for myself to see if they will make it through the winter with mulch.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

We can all just buy from Van Bourgendien or whoever ourselves and not burden you, Badseed. This is simply not a good plant to try to co-op, from what I see posted here.
At least we learned something about it.
