How do you all start seeds?

Phoenix, AZ

I have a TON of seeds coming from E-bay. I have a side yard all set to go! Do you nick the seeds? h20/h202? Baggie? What works best for you? I have h202, plant lights, heating pad, baggies, soil for seed starting LOL!!
Thanks for your input!

Hello,
Everyone will find methods that tend to work better for them in their specific locality and the heat applied from either the top or the bottom may do the trick for some seeds that don't jump immediately right out of their shells after nicking and Hydrogen peroxide /water soak...

I've found that giving them at least one dry or moist cold period is sometimes necessary to remove germination inhibitors...my impression is that many otherwise viable seeds are being classified as 'bad' seeds, because there was no cold period applied...

Sprouting mediums will vary relative to the experience of each person...but the two basic approaches are to use a microflora rich medium that will successfully compete with 'damping off' pathogens, but not do any damage to the seeds or young plants,...alternatively to use a germinating environment that is closer to a quasi-sterile situation to reduce the overall quantity of all organisms and in so doing hopefully prevent the many different types of 'damping off' and over-proliferation of other decay causing organisms...

Many species depend on the specific mycorhizial relationship to the micro-organisms that attach to the roots...these micro-organisms modulate the chemistry of the local environment surrounding the roots enabling absorption of micro and macronutrients...mycorhizial organisms perform a range of functions that influence the biochemistry of the plant.

Many species can be grown in alternative environments ,as in hydroponics, but old fashioned healthy soil is still a viable option...

I like to place the seeds inside moistened papertowels or coffee filters that I lightly 'crunch up' into a ball with the seeds suspended in the middle...this allows for maximum aeration, while still keeping them moist...the PT or CF draw any organic 'muck' away from the seeds, helping to prevent decay...I place this 'assembly' inside' of any type of little greenhouse like a baggie or plastic container...I check to see how the seeds are doing, cleaning or adjusting as necessary and remove any seeds that have enough primordial root showing to allow me to carefully place the root into a separate seedling starter mixture...I make some temperature, moisture and light adjustments as I feel indicated...this usually works out well for me..

TTY,...
