Thanks to Critter.......I simply HAD to look up Buckeyes........now I want one! LOL (Isn't that how we end up with hundreds of plants in our houses?) This is a dangerous forum to poke about in...
Here's my question.....(since I had never even heard of Buckeye until just now)...what's the difference between "Standard" and "Large" on the catalog pages? I'm vacillating between 'Bravado' and 'Elderberry Wine' but wanted to get an education before I decide. Buckeyes sound like lovely plants.

Buckeye question...
A Large violet has the potential of becoming bigger than a standard. Standards usually grow 10 to 12 inches across and are in 3 or 4 inch pots. Some can grow bigger. Large violets when mature could be in a 5 or 6 inch pot. I have heard of violets that are 20 inches across. Notice the wording "usually", "could", "Potential". It boils down to where the plant is most happy.
Edited for spelling

Karen, i was just looking at Elderberry wine yesterday on Violet Gallery site. She doesn't have a photo, so I went googling. http://www.dollyyeh.idv.tw/buckeye_elderberry_wine.htm
I ended up narrowing my 'need' list to Buckeye Everybody's Fantasy and Buckeye Incognito
http://violetgallery.com/html%20pics/buckeyeincognito.html
http://violetgallery.com/html%20pics/buckeyeeverybodysfantasy.html
Now I just have to decide from my 'need' list which ones I can not live without!
From the bargain violet sale I have
Buckeye Befuddled
Buckeye Cherry Pink
and
Buckeye Country Gal
all pretty tiny still.
K, check the photo I just posted again on the First Class thread... that is what a "large" standard can look like! Oh, heck, I'm going to post the photo again -- sorry about taking up server space, Dave, but I love this plant!
You got me curious about actual dimensions, so I grabbed a measuring tape... 'Buckeye Boysenberry' is now 20 inches across, leaf-tip to leaf-tip! 'Grape Slush' is 15 inches & growing fast, but 'Buckeye Bellringer' is only about 10 inches and looks smaller because of its downward leaf habit.
Other standards can be "large" also, and the big ones will get even bigger if you up-pot them. I have a noid that got to 14 inches across before I put it into a 6 inch pot... now, "Big Blue" is between 16 and 20 inches, depending on how recently I've removed a couple of outer rows of leaves. I'm not sure I want to know what 'Buckeye Boysenberry' here would do in a 6 inch pot! LOL
You sure see some of them at Shows 24 inches and more across, all perfect shapped and layers. Last year or so someone posted Tiger grown with just Eleanor's Vf-11 a plant little over one year old and I think it was like 24 inches across. I'll have to see if I can find it :))
Oh how exciting! Large is the one I want! My Mom is going to freak out! (She has a couple regular AV's and a mini) Maybe we should each buy one plant then trade leaves later this year! That should help keep the price of this illness down. The Buckeye Club! LOL
Is culture the same as for regular AV's? Mine just LOVE Eleanor's VF-11 and bloom like crazy.
I may have to create a "Giants" table at my house! I have a begonia that is 36" wide, 24" high (top of soil to highest leaf) and I just measured a single leaf at 14". (I'll take a pic tomorrow, too dark now) I think the begonia and buckeye will be friends (and take up the whole table!) They will HAVE to be friends, all my other plants are going to be jealous!

Check out this site. I thought the prices couldn't be beat! At this rate I can have as many as I want!

Do you buckeye people also LOVE Apache?
I know I am an apache junkie too :)
I just got a new one in yesterday! I need to take a picture of it to share with the group,
What say the "Buckeye Club" is about any "fun and unusual AVs". Does that work for everyone? I don't have anything unusual yet, so I will really have to get to work on that. :~D
My guess Critter, is that you would be the most obvious charter member! This will be fun. Do we need a logo? Maybe a button to wear on our Dave's Garden tee shirts! LOL
K
Yes, I do love the Apache series also! I think of Buckeye-types as large AVs with cream & pink variegation. My true faves are the ones that also have red backed leaves.
Oh, and I may be a charter member.... but I think Deb should be the founder... did you see the list of Buckeyes on her thread about starting some leaves?? Wowza! And, Buckeye Club or not, I like the idea of an "AV forum" button! K, you'll design one for us, won't you please?
I have an 'Apache Victory' plant with its first bloom... The variegation on the leaves is actually just pink; I don't think there's any white or cream showing on it now... I adored it even before it bloomed!
Here it is:
Oh she is pretty critter.
I actually have to look when I get home to tell you which apache I got in the mail. I don't remember but the flowers are pansy style :)
Oh gee, now I'm falling for Apaches too! Face it I'm just a plant sucker, I love them all! Who knew when I first fell in love with plants at age 14 that there were so MANY!!!!! (Ah! I forgot to take a pic of my begonia! Just remembered!)
Of course all are welcome to the Buckeye Club...the more plants they own the more welcome they are! (hahaha just kidding!)
Sure I'll design the button! That will be fun! Anyone have one of those button-maker machines? LOL
Are pansy-style flowers the ones with the larger lower petals? (I have so much to learn here)
Karen
Your plants are all so pretty Jill :))
Wow awesome plant thanks for sharing !
What I want to now what ever happen to the Buckeye club !
Yeah!
Did I send you any Buckeye plants of leaves Karen ?
Can't wait to see pictures !
jDoes anyone have Buckeye's Leprechaun Charm. What a beauty.
Nope not anymore sorry gave my last 2 away
Yes you did Allison, I have the list "somewhere", but I remember seeing one Buckeye for sure, maybe 2. I'll look through them this weekend and post the pic with the pics of the cute "plant holders" I'm using for my AV's these days.

Can't wait to see pictures !
