LOL I'm with you ~ I've always thought Alyssum stunk!
Fragrant disappointments?
What a funny thread!
Sweet alyssum has no smell that I can tell. I'm a poet and didn't know it :>}.
I grow freesia and when I walk out my front door in the spring time, oooohhhh it smells so good. It has really multiplied over the years. It makes gorgeous bouquets. Brightens up every room in the house.
For spring, mountain laurel has big bloom blooms that smell like grape koolaid. It's a slow growing tree but it is stunning when in bloom. For more constant color and fragrance try a Vitex/Chaste tree. (This one grows fast)
Chantell I have the same peony and could only smell it if I buried my face in it. I got the tuber about 4 years ago. The first year just leaves, 2nd year buds that blackened, 3rd year I threatened it and got 2 flowers and this year I got 5 huge flowers but I'm not impressed. It takes up a valuable amount of real estate in my small apartment garden and I'm considering eviction this fall...
No fragrance on my peruvian daffodil either. It is kinda flashy though so it will stay:)
dmac,
Your thoughts are mine re space she takes up...mine is a townhouse size yard...and my flower bed is small!!
I have a Sarah Bernhardt and it smells wonderful. When I cut the flowers and bring them in the house, it scents up the whole room. I've heard other people say theres doesn't have a smell????? Wondering why the difference in the smells. I know mines a SB too.
IsThisHeaven, I first read "I have a Saint Bernard and it smells wonderful." hee hee.
I was disappointed with my Virginia stocks. Pretty, but the scent was negligible.
Unfortunately, I have to add another plant to my list: David Phlox. It is reputed to have an awesome fragrance. I could not detect any smell at all........ :(
Any one have this experience with it?
Client has some, it doesn't do well here, the scent is faint but in a better location, it might be better.
Hi berrygirl,
I have it in my garden and in this heat (90's) it smells lovely...
I have to admit that I have never noticed it before it got this hot and
I've grown it for years.
It may be the heat brings out the smell as yesterday morning, I double checked at my client's and I couldn't smell it at all, but it did have to be stronger than neighboring flowers, Dhalias, Cleome and Verbena bonerensis plus it was mid morning and fairly cool, probably mid 80's at that time. Her soil is acid fill dirt, heavily ammended with sand, manure and mulch, to slightly acidic, it is in part shade, planted in full sun but other perennials tower on 2 sides so sun is mainly from the front, a wall at the back, any of which could cause a difference, next time i am there when it is hot I'll check agin , so we can tell if it is only heat of if cultural conditions make the difference. I'll be there today but she is first call and I doubt it will be hot before i am through. at least I hope not :)
