Mirabilis (4 O'Clocks) Warning!

somewhere, PA

Ooops. I thought you meant the JB's. Not spiralling after all.

Really? And they provide fertilizer where the plant 'em too I bet!

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Hey Vi,
Call me and I'll come down and vacuum seeds for you any time!

(Zone 7a)

Such hardworking chickens certainly deserve the best! Japanese Beetles a la Vacuum au Frissee

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Deb be careful what you offer, lol! Tell ya what, I'll plan on it for our Fall Swap, I'm only about 15 miles away ;>}

I'm just glad I don't have Larkie's problem, lol!

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Don't tell my neighbor it's not invasive. They started with one small plant and it has taken over the whole back yard as they didn't get after it when it started. I only have the yellow.
It is potted and will stay potted here.

I am with violabird. My 4s are trying to take over my world. I also have the magenta color. I love them and nothing that a shovel and some round-up can't control. LOL

I will have tuber and seeds to anyone who wants them next summer.

Betty

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

betty,
Y'all must be livin' right, b/c I CAN'T get mine to re-seed. I've only had 2 plants come up beside the Momma plant in 5 yrs! Of course the bush gets bigger every year so I'm happy about that.

Someone sent me a pk of mixed seeds so I'm [hopefully] gonna get more started in another part of the yard.

I have some seeds, also. Do you know how soon we can plant them in GA?

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

You can winter sow them [in the planter or bed you want them to grow in] now if you want to. I dont think they transplant very well. Or just wait 'til after your last projected frost date. There is a long thread here at DG on WS. If you're not familiar with that method, I'll find the link for you.

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

Hey Elaine, I'm coming to your house to help you with your 4 o'clocks and the purple cone flower too, I'm so sick of looking at my barren wasteland of a yard, and I have a long wait before spring starts up here.

Promise not to laugh at my glowing white skin!

Dena

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

gren,
I live on the way to I01's! You can drop in my place either before or after hers- LOL!!

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

LOL!! Hey gren, any Southern girl worth her salt can make iced tea, ain't that right elaine? We start cooking before we can walk! LOL!

Amen! :)

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

I might have asked her for a coffee in a DG cup but we all know they don't exsist....

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

ROFLMBBO!!!

That's right ... but I will serve you a *very* good glass of sweet tea in my DG T shirt. ;)

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

my husband is reading over my shoulder shaking his head and muttering something about crazy women....

Dena is giggling at his ignorance...

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

DG coffee cups are a legend, a myth, sorta like the Holy Grail! LOL!!

Well, I *certainly* hope that Dave is reading this thread. LOL LOL

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

If he is, we'll soon know it! LOL

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

do either of you have Brugmansia?

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Gren,
Unlike you I don't have a greenthumb. I have tried several times to grow them from seed and have had no success. I have a couple of diff seeds and am gonna try again this year. I so wish I could grow them. Now Viola is the lady with the brugs- from what I hear. Are you into brugs?

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

I tried growing them over the summer as an annual, they are soo wonderful!

I'm going to start another from seed indoors and I think I might try keeping it in the pot and wintering it over in my basement.

Note: check for bees before sticking nose in flower!

yes folks a hard lesson learned...

berrygirl
I'm starting plants from seed for the first time this year. I have my 4 O'clocks, Sweet William and some sweet peas. Oh, I almost forgot ... I bought some Lavender seeds from HD last night and am going to see if they'll come up. I figure it won't hurt to try. :)

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

Berry, If I were you knowing what I now know, I would say plant away till you get one and it will be worth the time you spent trying, they smell so good.

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

I01,
WOW! You've got some good one's there! I hope they all come up for you. I haven't been gardening that long- 5 yrs- so I know how exciting it is sowing those first seeds and waiting. Of course it still is fun to me as each year it's something new!

Gren,
I have a few so I'm gonna sow a flat and see what comes up. Any tips you can give me?

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

you might want to ask around for some kind person to airlayer a plant for you, it may be the way to ensure you get the chance to have one, trade for something...

lo1 needs - BEE BALM- for her humming birds!

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Why don't you snowbirds start with Brug Cuttings instead of seeds since you have a shortened growing season. You can save a few months.
Jan...

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

Jan,
I had good luck with brug seeds, I'm going to start them early inside this year, can't wait to see them!!!
I think i need a greenhouse... LOL

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Did they bloom the first year from seeds. I have seeds but have never tried to grow them.
Jan...

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

mine bloomed just fine but didn't get over four feet, now sadly the only thing left of them is the seed. I want to plant in a big pot and bring them in to winter over. wish me luck, I have dreams a huge brug, big enough to hug!

: )
Dena

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

My Home Depot has some 6-7 footers full of yellow blooms right now.
$49.99. Yikes. I have about 20 of various sizes up to about 3 ft but only 2 have bloomed so far, one is Maya and the other an unknown pink. I'm hoping for quite a show this summer.
Jan...

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

Thats $49.99 more than i'm willing to spend, not to mention, I enjoy having the gloat factor, there is nothing like being able to say " I grew them myself!"
I wouldn't mind seeing them though. They sound lovely.

Could your Pink Brug be insignis 'pink'?

Dena

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I do have some insignis and some frosty's but this one lost it's tag. If I can find the pic I'll post it.

West Warwick, RI(Zone 6b)

...Jan I'm hoping to get a Ditgital camera for my Birthday (monday)
Cross your fingers for me, I would love to share my garden with everyone in DG.
And I hope you do post your pictures, I love to see the results of other peoples love and hard work.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

I have some seeds from my pink and white brugs that I would love to send to anyone who wants them. They are SLOW to germinate, sometimes a month. LOL They are so worth the effort. I will have rooted cuttings of my pink and white when the weather is warm enough to ship if any one wants them. They smell WONDERFUL.

Betty
