Tri-Colored Beech are few and far between in my area. I think i have the only one on Lake of the Ozarks.
Looking for owners of Tri Colored Beech
ozarkian, we have a few growing in our gardens. We saw a beautiful specimen at the Virginia State Arboretum several years ago and had to have it! A one gallon container was planted three years ago and hadn't grown very well. We lacked patience and purchased a 3 gallon container last year and anxiously watching for it to grow into something as gorgeous as the one we saw at VSA

Do you know the aged goliath at Swannanoa? That shouldn't be too far from your area of circulation. I hope it is still there.
On the recommendation of the late nurseryman Theodore Klein, I visited there around 1989 and nearly swooned. I was traveling to Andre Viette's place in Fisherville to pick up a load of perennials and Swannanoa wasn't far off the beaten path. This big old tree, to me, was incomparable for a variegated European beech, especially in such an out-of-the-way place, and a bit south of where Fagus sylvatica is supposed to perform well. Whether it is specifically the one known as 'Tricolor' or 'Roseomarginata' doesn't matter; it is a WOW specimen.
Now I'm going to have to rummage around the old slide boxes and see if I can find this one and scan it in to post.

I know of only four places in missouri with this tree. two are Hosta growers up in the Kansas city area. the one I have here and one at missouri Botanical Gardens in St Louis. My daughter lives in a restored area of columbus ohio and there are a couple within blocks of her home. Mine here is small still but it attacts a lot of attention up until about July when people visit my garden.
That looks a lot like "my" purple European beech. I say "my" because it was only "mine" from the purple majesty sky it created outside my window. It was 100-feet tall and four houses away, and you could see that tree from almost anywhere in town. I cried and cried when the new property owners cut it down.

Joulz, that link broke my heart.
ViburnumValley, don't know how I missed your post, but Swannanoa sounds intriguing and isn't far from us. My husband may know about this estate, but it's new information for me, only having been in Virginia for six years. We will definitely have to check it out on one of our trips over the "mountains". Thanks for the reference and be sure to post a picture if and when you find one. Debra
