Fancy. When did you plant those acorns, old man? And when are you going back to the great AK?

I will not explain too far, but I once tried to blow up a house in a new developement years ago. (No, I'm not a dangerous person as I was back then) I still love the suburbs to the same degree, however.

Here is the penultimate feild being gobbled up behind me.

And, I regret to admit that hte only pictue I have that shows the neighborhood as it is now is cluttered by some bozo's face.

I was over there today watching someone struggle with sick yard plants suffereing in the compacted subsoil! I was officious and gave them some pointers that no doubt flew over their heads like pigeons to gargoyles.

People have to live somewhere, don't they? At least there is lots of space to go before I die, eh?

I have the same story at the beginning of our road. Alfalfa/grade/road/utilities/tract homes/big buldozers grading the top soil back to whereever they want it/fences. This is America and that is how we define success. Again we need a bird flu virus to thin out the population.
Great photo of anonimous man in cut alfalfa field. LOL What it says to me is, he is happy that there are new homes taking away all that nitrogen that has been fixed there for so many years and he can't wait to paint their fences. Right Huck Fin?
Just got here this pm.

So true. N fix. I had forgotten about that. Perhaps those plants will survive if they get into the better soil...
Enjoy your trip, Steve.
Kenton

Hey you two
well it seems all is well :)
Oh steve i m so envy of you going to Alaska:)
WIND is an understatement, Kenton LOL Utah , eh you can have it, way to much snow for me , LOl .
WE were in Nehpi and it snowed about 8 inches when we were there , then Park City had more snow. Park City , ahhaha funny people, ahahhaha
We got to Rowling Wyomming and got stuck , they closed I- 80 then we crept along at about 40 mph all the way to Cheynne then we got to finally go 65, Finally made ti to Illionos then had tornados and golf size hail whao whooo , then we all got sick,
Wymomming is windy, fun to see all the trains , my 2 yr old son had a blast looking at all the trains.
have fun steve in Alaska , oh yeah "dont feed the bears " lol
Nice pics Kenton, i know what you mean about the housing.
we lived in cookie cutter houses in AZ and it was miseralble!!!!
People are reall y proud of their turf in AZ because none grows there. you see guys with huge lawn mowers with a 6'x6 'area of grass , very funny, cement houses not for you or me.
i m so excited getting some Llama poop in a few days, for my compost, got new seeds in the mail too, some of my floweres are starting to grow. yeah spring.
talk soon
happy gardening

Sue reading your post rminded me of the trip my daughter and I took when she moved from here to Illinois in 1974. we were driving her little Chevy (can't remember which one it was), and it was loaded, it was March and we had hoped the weather would not be too bad. We stayed overnight in Rawlins, WY, after taking her plants out of the car into the motel so they wouldn't freeze. Left fairly early next morning in a storm, roads were getting bad, I made her let me drive, as I felt I had had more driving experience in snow. They closed I-80 right behind us. We had a second breakfast in Cheyenne, we were so happy to get over that pass. Was quite an experience but we were lucky, no really seriious problems.

Oh Kenton... such a beautiful view to have the base of it gobbled up by development! Georgia still has lots of back roads... but where I live doesn't have those big mountains but we're in the foothills. We could use some of that knowledge in your head! Bring your tea with you when you come!

"God made the mountains.
God made the sky.
God made the poeple; God knows why.

He fixed up the planet,
as best as he could,
Then in come the people and gum it up good."

I love "Paint your Wagon."
"My fair lady" was good and all, but not compared to that.

Keep us informed on the Llama! I wish I could find a source here.
I think that I ahve spent too much money on bulbs to travel next summer, but who knows, eh?

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

James I like the little poem, Am going to read it to the Senior Center today. I always read a good joke or a saying, they seem to enjoy that. Thanks for posting it.

Ok I know off topic, but what bulbs did you buy?

And back on. Is mushroom compost good?

i will have tea for you, my own special brew, grew it myself, Kenton

Donna:

Any compost is good, really. Mushroom compost is basically manure and wood pulp, as I understand.
What bulbs? I don't have enough time. Spring, right? A couple black callas, A green/purple Glad... Leucocoryne 'Andes' for heaven knows what reason. Some terrestrial orchids, Cannas, Gingers, Musa, Lilium. What bulbs did you buy? (I have that little list of plants that are set aside for you when it warms up)

And Sue; you got me interested. What kind (of plant)? Don't dare say "Cannabis sativus, " or I'll chuck you out of the truck in the middle of Northern Montana.

Now where did Steve run off to? Oh. To the dock with his fishing gear. Serious business.

Thankyou James, copied the whole lyric, will read today at the center.

Well James to tell you the truth I am still planting fall bulbs I got really cheap. I better not buy any spring yet. I am too far behind. I just bought some vegetable plants the other day.

I figured mushroom compost was made out of mushrooms. Shows what I know. I hope the 50lbs of chicken. cow and sheep doesn't burn my plants. I am going to use very little. But like I really know how much that is??? We shall see. I will compost what I don't use. I figured it was better than composted cow manure.

The lady at the nursery said as long the bag did not get wet I could haul a matress for my son the same day. Oh boy can't wait to smell it in my small yard. My neighbors will be running me out of here.

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^

Oh no not Montana? ! LOL
steve might steal my tumbler, if i m not their to protect it. LOLOL
I believe it is a recipe of camomile, lavender, mint and some other ancient chinese secrets , that if i told you , i would have to take your cute, furry doggies hostage and hold them for ransom. LOL Mewhahahaha. :)

mint and some other ancient chinese secrets
Means in everyday language, Cannibus. Hey Kenton, do that, toss her out about Missoula and I can come and get my soil mixer that should be mine if i had kept my mouth shut. How much do I have to pay for a new one sue? Give me the site.
Your right Kenton the sun came out and I had to spend time on the beach and hiking in the park and taking photos of mountains. Though I will be glad to get off "the rock" on monday to get home to my budding garden.
I used mushroom compost in my vegetable garden and had to add sandy loam because the veggies (Carrots, radishes) tasted bitter. And I know what horse manure tastes like. They were like wasabi with the essence of dead fish. It did work well on my acid loving plants area.

Thumbnail by Soferdig
Denver, CO

You used too much, I reckon, and planted things right on top, no doubt. Yeah, that rich stuff needs time to be eaten by the soil.
That's why they call alkaline (not acid) soil "sweet." You ought to taste a February carrot. "The Gardener's Delight." I have to plant more next fall!

(Trivia: The reason winter-harvested carrots are scientifically referred to as "so darned good" is that the carrot plant collects an overabundance of sugars in the root to keep itself from freezing over the winter so that either it can survive to bloom and have sex in the spring or be pulled by the hungry gardener.) Ever notice how water freezes before Grapejuice? What would you rather drink?

Hey Sue, what plants or seeds do you want me to send you for a bit o' that good tea? D-mail me if this is not a joke anymore (insert giddy laugh). And actually, I did toss out a pothead like that in N Montana.

Soon, Sandy, you will learn to love the smell of compost and manure. I can't speak for the neihgbors unlesss you bribe them with February carrots.

Kenton

well i do have a mint named after Hilary Clinton , LOL .
Steve have you tried using eggshells to start seeds in ? that might work for carrots and radishes. help the bitterness.
we are talking legal mushrooms ? lol
I think it was Gardeners Supply online catolog, but i will check. It was about $125 +tax and shipping.

hwo are your compost piles comming along Kenton? still working on mine adding some brown stuff, to get it jumping soon, along adding some Llama poop , workign on the layers.
I just found another 20 - 30 bulbs in my yard that i had to dig up and replant. Uunghg. I am in the middle of moving a flower bed that is siitting in the middle of my yard to another location , Keep finding stufff i though i got all of it last seson. I dug up about 200 daffodils ,seperated them ,then replanted them in the new bed, I hope they all bloom it will be reall y pretty to see them all, 200 , eee gahyds.
sue

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Thanks again Kenton I'll just lime the garden bed. Good idea. My favorite job on the farm was limeing the hay fields. Just drive the tractor up and down the field to spred the calcium around.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Kenton, I have no problem with manure, You see where I hang out. ROTFLOL It is DH that said OH NO!! . We had pigs, sheep, cows, chickens, rabbits, ducks, and goats when I was growing up in PA. Talk about up to your ears in manure. Oh yeah I had a pony for a while.
Oh and I was going to haul the matress on top of the bag so I did not have to come home first. Guess if it would have smelled up the mattress, DS would not ask me to haul anything again. LOL

If the carrots are that good I am not sharing. They can just put up with the smell. Sure will beat these chemical plants here.

Soferdig, they must be legal mushrooms, they are only 7.98 a 50 lb bag.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

In Seattle there was a sod farm known to grow the magic ones. My track home was sodded with it and we had circles of shrooms collected by our local hunter gatherers every morning. We only paid $30/sq yd.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I don't know what a shroom looks like but my son was very familiar at one time. I understand they grow in cow patties. Needless to say I myself would put it in my garden but to smoke anything that is growing in a cow pattie is not my idea of a way to use manure.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I don't think they smoke them I think they just eat them. I'm only an onlooker.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

whoops double post.

Hey brother in Christ you got the right idea. but pass the eggplant parmishian is my favorite veggie I'm waiting for.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Hey Kenton how do you leave your carrots in the ground that long to get that big. We here in Montana have to work for a living and need to eat BIG MEAL. So carrots are about 3" long with the biggest ones. Hey let me know how to grow those big white Dankers or what ever radishes. I love those!

Denver, CO

This one was harvested early September, for kicks and not flavor. For flavor, you should get them at 6" or so. This thing didn't taste great. Some big ones will taste better after the ground cools, others still taste sour.
Don't work very hard in MT, do you?
Radishes are different show entirely, I don't eat them anyhow.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

So you leave them in the ground after the plant dies? More fructose huh?

Denver, CO

Only the biggest leaves die off, the little new ones hang on all winter. But don't eat a second year carrot- nasty! I don't know if it is fructose or a different sugar, but it happens when the carrot is afraid of freezing. I don't blame'em. December thaw is a good time.
You mean Daikon Radish, no? Big suckers for big appetites.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Thats the one. I slice them with a knife and eat them like potatoe chips. Being Diabetic I'm always looking for a snack. You can dip them in any flavor you want and it takes up the flavor.

Denver, CO

I am hypoglycemic and know the story. I am told that my habit of eating lettuce strait from the head as a snack is not common practice.
They sound interesting. They don't taste like regular radishes then? Like potatoes, perhaps.
The best little seed company in cold cold Maine: Scroll down to radishes.
http://www.superseeds.com/Asian.htm

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

They are very crisp and a little sweet but you can slice them very thin and they are a calorie free snack. No radish bite at all. Go try one at your grocery store.
