=^..^=
Nice Brian.
Are you growing any unusual species Canna? Did those C. jaegariana (sp?) seeds from ABG ever sprout for you?
Id like to get a few more species Canna this year. Canna glauca is one that look interesting. Know where to get this?
Michael
canna x ehemanii, I got one this year and it still has a green stem in the greenhouse, but didn't grow a lot. has red edged leaves. I also have one i got from a supermarket with very dark red edged leaves, the flowers are a deep bright pink, 'hot' pink, don't have a photo. I wonder if it is a cross with this, flowers are not pendulant, didn't do too well this year, needed a repot.

canna Wyoming has some variegation, i had one that wasn't really the proper plant, but have seen them at local garden centre with very good purple/brown leaves and a little marking

canna Ambassador is similar to Black Knight

I have just ordered a canna Pink Futurity, it may have some variegation
this site has one called China Lady, purplish foliage looks like might be variegated.
La Traviata looks very much like my hot pink one, it has very dark green leaves and a strong red edge, flowers a bit deeper than pic

you might find this site interesting, they have many more in stock

Wally your right that these have coloration in the leaves. But I am not sure if I place them in the same group as the others above. If so I have tons that would fit in with these. A lot of forms have rims around the leaf and dark leaves with lighter blotching. I can throw up a pic of some new hybrids that could easily fit in this group. A few of these I have not named yet but am looking to this coming season.
This is a new hybrid and most all my intrigue hybrids have some odd coloration of green blue and purple.
michael I do have the plants of jaegariana around somewere LOL. I have a few species as well. If you come out I should have plants grown from seed around you can have.
love those last two, and the lau above is tops, interesting the narrow leaves. So when do they go on the market and how do we get them?
Well a few are being released for the first time this coming spring. Others like Canna Lau maybe this coming summer or next season I may be doing more with it than most sense it is so unique. Here are a few more photos of ones with not quite solid colored leaves.

wallaby I have so many hybrids I will probably have to slow down as the market cannot handle it. Most people produce about 2 to 10 hybrids a year I could produce much more than this and most if not all would be unique or very well worth growing. But hitting this market were it takes a few years for a plant to even get known. A lot of good plants have slipped in the cracks of obscurity and I hope my plants do not. I try to release a few of the best I got for each year. Their is no Canna Society I am sad to say and releasing hybrids is a bit tough you have to do it all market them sell them and hope they make it with the all time best forms. Which most do not. Most people only grow a hand full of cannas and they usually pic the most colorful though it is hard to call any canna ugly some are just superior with colored leaves bigger flowers and more flowers. Out of all my breeding of cannas I would say I have maybe 2 or 3 that will probably stay around for a long time many of these others look good but are more for hobbyist not mass market I think. I would like to be proven wrong but most people care less about the foliage and want outrageous flowers. Most of mine have amazing foliage but most lack in the huge flower department.
bwilliams, I know what you mean about getting a product to the market, also about popularity of types. When I read of cannas on sellers' websites here, the feeling is that in the relatively recent past the 'gaudy' was out, and is now very popular. Most people don't understand the capabilities of a plant, let alone how to look after it. If more could realise these are capable of being grown in the ground, and I think in this country many would be (just got to get my next patch sorted!), it could take off. There is also something of a 'my mother had that and I'm not going to' attitude, and once a person gets seriously involved that attitude turns to obsession. A good article in garden magazines can help, or a mention on a TV gardening programme. I wonder if you could try some of the main growers here on a Plant Breeder's Rights basis?
Hart Canna have at least 800 varieties, I had their catalogue, can't find it poss. slung it. What they have on their web site is only the tip of the iceburg. Jungle Gardens also grow a lot of their own, and are a long established business. Urban Jungle I think grow their own as well. These are the types of growers/sellers that will gain a good reputation of having good stock, virus free. My canna Durban I have had a few years does seem to have some leaf discolouration and loss of vigour, so might chuck it, have bought a rhizome from a new ebayer growing them in the ground.
I think that is mostly the case, grow many thousands of plants to select a really good cultivar, what a trawl! But the rewards of having developed something that everyone trips over to get can be good, than again....you need a major strategist, or a heck of a lot of luck.
I would say all 3 of yours above are better than many on the market, and the trend here is going towards not necessarily big blousy flowers, but an interesting plant foliage wise. Small and delicate can be very classy. I find on ebay the really 'different' ones, the 'conniseur' plants really fly, and there's always people finding them if they are being sold, but it seems to be short lived. Thus it would appear to be only the occasional 'conniseur'. I have stopped looking on ebay (well mostly), too many people with too much 'ordinary' stuff. There are plenty of specialist growers if you look.
I would love to be able to purchase all 3 of yours, so maybe you could do a bit of fishing?
I do use e-bay in the spring and summer as well. But during the cold I don't put much if anything up. Your completely right about the cannas I am looking into a few ways to release them to a larger market. So far it has been a bit crazy. I hope I can find one or two good sources and keep to it.
I have new seedlings coming along right now that have streaked looking foliage not exactly like tropicanna but more fading of all those colors in one leaf it looks very interesting.
This little seedling has a nice leaf on it as well. Still smaller orange peach looking bright flowers. It looks similar to the one I have called William shatner and is probably a hybrid off of it. I will post pics of william shatner next
That 1st seedling looks very promising for someone wanting smaller plants, love the leaves, flowers very sweet as well. You would be surprised how many people prefer 'small', while I go for BIG, they either don't have the room or have too much wind!
Your William Shatner reminds me a little of Black Knight, but with the more bluish tone, very nice, and a great contrast to the flower. The leaves struck me instantly as having a very unusual shape, just a tiny bit fuller than Black Knight, with a dramatic 'swerve' to the tip. Then when I mentioned it's name to my partner and showed it to him, he said about Startrek (of course he was a fan), and it came to me, Dr. Spock's ears! It looks to grow into a good strong grower.
Will be in touch.
