I. Ochracea

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I have several photos of i. ochracea that I forgot I planted seeds of. I had them in a 4 in pot and put them on a shelf with some other and forgot about them. I tend to group alot of seedling pots together on shelves to simplify watering. I planted most of the seedlings but left a few pots of vines on the shelf. I was watering and noticed 3 MG's I had there had bloomed or had buds and since we are in a cool rainy spell, I brought them in with the intention of repotting them in 1 gal. pots. I decided to wait until after blooming.
Sinceit has been kept in a 4 in pot, its growth has been retarded but still bloomed.

Not Morning Glories but since they were on the same disk, I thought I'd post them.
These are vigna caracalla seedlings started last week. Should be nice plants by spring.

Thanks for the photos. I have germinated some seed inside, but have never tried growing the MG inside past early seedling stage. How much light, or direct sunlight do they need to "prosper" inside?

I can't answer as they were already budding when I brought them in due to the cold and rain.
I currently have them under a grow light which I run 24 hrs/day.

Seeds from the strains originating in the West Indies would probably be better acclimated and flower sooner in response to the conditions of continental US than seeds originating in the southern parts of the Indian ocean...

Jan,
Your ochracea is a beauty.
Way to go!

I would think these would be hardy for you in the ground in your zone???
They are for Cat in deep South-Texas close to the Mexico border who is also in zone 9.

I just returned from Christmas in Acapulco -
6 delightful 80 degree days in Sunny Mexico. . .
so have a lot of catching up to do.

Hi Emma,
It probably would be and I will put it out after it's done blooming.
I don't want to upset it right now. It's still in it's original 4 in pot and got forgotten for awhile.

My ipomoea ochraceas are doing wonderfully this season. Lots of blooms and many seed pods forming. Am starting to harvest seeds :o)

Dratted freak freeze and snowfall in December 2004 zapped my vines to the ground. Glad they grew back :o) They have really long tendrils. Some vines have wandered over my backyard side gate and latched onto trellises on the east side of my house - which is about 20 or so feet away.

Here's a recent photo of some blooms...these are way up high as this vine has decided to work it's way onto my roof - had to get my ladder out to photograph them!

Cat,
Those are amazingly beautiful.
Don't know if you saw my post, but I DID get a few buds, but it was too late in the season and they never opened.
Maybe next year.

Good going Cat. I will be putting mine in the ground in a couple of months where it will have all spring and summer to take off. I am hoping to get some fresh seeds from it as I had a hard time getting my purchased ones to germinate.

Howdy Emma...I saw your post a while back about the vines you have. Have also seen all those gorgeous photos of the other morning glories too.

Budgie...plant them in the ground if you can. I'm in zone 9 and our weather has fluctuated from 50's at night to high 80's during the day. The leaves suffered a little bit when the temperature dropped into the mid 30's and the wind picked up last month but the vines otherwise fine and they continue to grow and bloom.

I also have a couple of vines in gallon pots that were started at the same time as those in the photograph. The ones in the pots are barely 2 feet in length. The ones in the ground have done so much better. They really are profuse bloomers and I am still amazed at how long the tendrils get.

I need to drag out my ladder to check them for drying seed pods soon.
