Part of branches are dying on my tree. It is about 40' tall now but several branches have dead wood and leaves on them. anybody know why??

Probably fireblight. Remove all infected branches as soon as possible . A 40ft tall tree is way too big for the average homeowner to spray and prune properly, you will need to call in a professional if you are serious about saving the tree.
