Irish Iridensence seed pod update

Silver Spring, MD

The blooms have now withered and the pods are growing on their own. I expect maturation sometime this late spring or early summer.

Nanna

forgive my terrible spelling.

Exciting! Who is the other parent? I've forgotten.

Silver Spring, MD

I don't know. Only know the seed parent. I move them around quite a bit and I always manage to bump into another plant white moving. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Fun!

Downloaded but couldn't figure out how to uncode it.

I'll try again without compressing the file.

This will be very interesting to watch ! I've never had it happen. Do you think this is rare ? Lot's of fun . Allison

Silver Spring, MD

I don't think so Allison. I remember seeing beginning pods alot but didn't know what they were.

The waiting games begins. One article I read suggested tying a bright bow around the stem. You know, like having a present on the plant. I might do that.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes then you don't forget to take it off while grooming ! FUN !!

Denver, CO

I've got a decent-sized pod on a purple-double noid right now.

Silver Spring, MD

Are you going to let it mature?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I fount some seed pot information on rachelsrefleections :))
Here is a seed pod. It often happens that a pistel gets caught between the 2 anthers and when the blossom opens entirely the pistil with the sticky end gets pulled through and tears the anthers where the powdery pollen is stored. I call this a self cross.

i've never had it happen though it says it happens oftern Very interesting. Will be fun to see what you get ! I guess a seed pod has humdreds of seeds.

(Zone 7b)

I think I have two of those on a noid I've got which is white with purple edges!
I wasn't sure what they were, but kept forgetting to ask on here. How do I know when it is ripe?
And then what do I do?

Silver Spring, MD

Check the link just above from VT. Great information. Another place also suggest tying a bow on the stem so you don't accidently cut if off.

It takes about 6 to 9 months for the ripening to complete. The pods will turn brown (sometimes brown and fuzzy). When that happens, you can cut the stem off and let the pods dry for a couple of days. Then carefully cut them open and extract the seeds.

Also, I understand that although you may get 100s of seeds only a a few plants will be worth keeping because of deformities and flaws.

Good luck. I will be fun to have a fellow seed pod grower!!!

Nanna

I tried the link and it was in the wrong place. Go to the main page and click on Hybridizing.

Thanks Nanna,
I cut a little piece of white paper for the stems, so I don't accidentally deadhead it - that would be awful!
Here's a picture, what do you think? does it look like one? (hope hope)
If it is, this is going to be fun - six to nine months for a seedpod - whew!

WOW Cheryl sure does. May takee up to 9 months to matur. I'll be watching ! Thanks, Allison

(Zone 7b)

I'd say that seems like an awfully long time, but I find, the older I get, the faster time seems to whip by!
I'll bore you to tears with pictures, shall I?:))

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well 6 to 9 months , and yours already has a start ! Is it from a named AV ? I could never get bored from your picturess !!

(Zone 7b)

Nope, it's a noid, and would never rebloom until we moved into this house, and then it started to go nuts - just loves the kitchen window!
All my AV's have gone crazy in this house - bloom for much longer, and with shorter "rest" periods.
I'll keep you posted on the progress of my seedpods!

Silver Spring, MD

Thanks 2Z. Between the two of us we should get some pretty good experience.

Denver, CO

Got one here, too.

How far along is yours? Are you a patient person, to wait 6-9 months?
Checking it obsessively every day, of course...

Silver Spring, MD

Here is mine. There were three on one stem. This morning I noticed one had dried up -- totally shriveled. I cut it off and checked it out. Nothing was inside. But here is a picture of the remaining two. I don't think they are getting any bigger. But, the color is changing slightly.

Last shot

As far a being patient. Don't know. So far so good. Except, I already dug into one of them. Alors, I guess I am not a patient person.

One thing I have discovered with the Easter Trade "Thing". I enjoy growing mature plants more that propagating leaves. I love the beauty of the leaves, blooms, and the line of the plant. I love the pruning and repotting and the wonder of "If I entered this one, would it win a prize?" I also enjoy standards and trailers more than minis and semi miniatures. That is a very recent change.

How are your pods? How many have you found?

So far, just the two on my one plant, it did have 3, but one did the same as you described, shrivelled up and fell off.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

WOW Fun ! I never paid attention so who knows but I don't think I ever had any. .
I can't wait watching yours will be fun. They are supose to filled with hundreds of seeds :)) Good job, good luck you three :))

(Zone 7b)

Hi,
Putzing around tonight with my AV's, and I noticed that the seed pod had turned brown, and the stem had withered, on one of them, so took it off, and opened it up, and it is full of the smallest seeds I've ever seen - like DUST!

Now what do I do?
I've never grown these from seed before!
I don't want to do it incorrectly.
thanks in advance,
Cheryl

There were some suggestions from Keyring and a couple of links on this thread about strepto. seeds.... I'm thinking the same general approach would work for AVs. It seems I've seen specific seed starting info for AVs on a thread here somewhere, but I'm not having any initial luck locating it.

edited because I forgot the link! http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/551970/

Duh! I should've checked the sticky first! The same geocities link that's on the thread above is also in the AV "sticky" thread at the top of the forum, under "Starting AV's from Seed."

Silver Spring, MD

Cheryl. Congradulation.

I have one that is drying after the stem withered. There were originally 3 on the stem. Two fell off at different times and after drying had nothing in them. I am hoping the third one will bear seeds.

The sticky is the place to go. Great information there.

WOw there are supose to be hundreds of seeds in there :)) I can't wait to see your babies :) Fun ! Exciting ! Allison

(Zone 7b)

Ahh, yes, the sticky!

What's it like, having live brain cells?:)
Cheryl

Silver Spring, MD

My pod completely dried up nothing there.

Good Luck to youCheryl

(Zone 7b)

My second pod looked "done", and the stem had completely withered, so took it off and opened it - lots of seed in it, too, so planted it as suggested in the sticky, now just have to wait and see - and try not to look at it 50 times a day and drive myself bonkers with impatience...

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Exciting Cheryl ! I can't wait to see all your babies :))

Silver Spring, MD

Cheryl

I am so excited for you. please keep us informed.

(Zone 7b)

I certainly will, I love growing plants from seed, always feel much so more attached to those ones.
