Does anyone grow Peony plants in So Cal?

Mesilla Park, NM

I've looked for some in the Box stores but cannot find any, is it because they just won't grow here or?? Does anyone know about the growth of these plants. I would like to grow some for one reason only.... they are gorgeous and I used to steal a couple from our landlord when i was a child and he always caught me, so he finally just decided to let me cut as many as I wanted. Boy do i miss him..

Here's a previous thread about growing them in Northern California. At the end is a post of mine about being able to grow them in warmer climates. Hope this helps.

I couldn't find your post, but do have a question. We do get frost here.. so maybe there would be enough chill time for them..

Where do they sell bulbs? Do the box stores carry them?

Thanks.

Oops!! Sorry! I've now added the thread to my original post. My apologies.

I don't know if the box stores carry peonies. I'm not at all familiar with growing them in California. I just googled some info and passed it on. I know there are two types of peonies: herbaceous peonies and tree peonies. One of the links provided in the previous thread is to Cricket Hill Garden, which sells both kinds. I'm sure any great nursery in your area would have them or at least be able to order them for you at the appropriate time of the year.

If this doesn't work, you can order them online or on eBay.

hiya Gourd,

I've got three tree peonies that will be in their third year this spring. I'm hoping that I've only got a couple of more years before they actually show some blooms. I guess there's a Chinese saying that they're better in their second century...lol. I'm sure I won't be around that long, but it would certainly be swell to get some blooms before I go to wherever I'm heading in the afterlife...lol.

best to you,
don

Well, okay, DrDon, let me know when yours bloom, then, I'll know there is some hope here.

Thanks all, for the info.
