What is a Wasp?

Denver, CO

In the spirit of our friend, "Violet_Treasure," I would like to start a thread for information about Wasp-type Violets. Seeing as I know little about them, I will leave the facts and better pictures to our resident experts.

Kenton

Here, however, is a picture of a young wasp plant to exhibit the hairier leaves and their different shape:

A wasp plant is an African violet with the special wasp flower. Most have bustled leaves , at least the older variety once they get older.
In a search on FC about 50 wasp plant come up , but there are way more than this and new ones being Hybridized each day.
The older Vintage Wasp by " Dates" grow and bloom best and most have the bustled leaves. New plants using the "Dates" parents give the best new Wasp Plants.
Here is pretty one by A. Date named Spootnik it's from 1964 . It has a single pink wasp. Wasp plant can be very hard to get .
This was one I got a couple leaves in my first trade going on a few years ago when I did not know what a wasp was and I did not know the value and rareness of these leaves and I lost them. I really had no idea what they were :((

There are a lot of new Wasp. But I still favor the Vintage ones by J. Dates :)) Caliico Wasp a Vintage Birthday from 07/26/1969
Single light lavender fluted wasp/purple fantasy. quilted/bustled back.
Itf you were to find a leaf or a plant of this it most likely be on Ebay with a high cost $$$ to come along with it.

Ok remember the Fay's Paisley Wasp..Well Nancy from Nancy Rainbows violets had a some babies of it and one of it bloomed Chimera. Soon the Sported Wasp Plant by Fay Wagman was named
Nancy's Plum Freckles. A Chimera Wasp plant ! Wow what a beauty !
Of course Fay gave Nancy her Blessings . So now we have two beautiful Wasp.
They say buy enough Fantasy Av's and someday you may get a Chimera :))

The First Green and White Wasp plant came out a couple years ago and the only one to this day. It is by David Senk. David is very famous for some of the very best unique wasp plants. He does use the Vintage " Dates" wasp as parent so a lot of his have bustled foliage and traits of the older wasp plants only David's Wasp are so facinating and different they bring extremly big bucks and only sold on Ebay. I paid $ 20.00 for a leaf set of this plant. The gave me seven nice babues which each sold from $ 20.00 to $ 30.00 each.
Here is a link to the Violet Lab. It has a few of David's fascinating plants that he only sells on Ebay.
http://www.africanviolet.info/The_Violet_Lab.htm
I have grown several of them only to sell or give away. I have one friend in her 80's I send her boxes of plants for postage. She got around five boxes this year. She loves Wasp plants. I have sent her about 12 rare wasp plants that could have sold for high $$$ but she loves Wasp plants so I send her the very best. She has to have large plants no leaves or she kills them. She is special mostly home bound taking care of her sick husband and growing African violets is her one joy :))
This is Davids Green wasp a photo he sent me.

OK you must see this. David Senk's Parakeet plant. He gave me a free baby about the size of a quarter even before it was released.
I nursed the little plant . I did sell it for around $ 40.00 but David's sales for them on Ebay go double high .
This is a picture he sent me.

Allison,

You must have one of every violet! I am so envious of your David Senk plants and have wanted to try his plants, but have been a scaredy cat when it came to ebay. However, since I won my first bids yesterday, I think that I'm feeling braver so I will keep a watch out for some of his plants.

I love the Parakeet plant and the plant in the photo with the yellow bell flowers. I'm a sucker for bell flowers!

Thanks for sharing the info...Stephanie

Looking at some of these photos of a wasp bloom, I am wondering if this noid of mine is a wasp. It has the coloring of a pansy. The three large petals are lavendar and the two smaller petals are purple.

Is this a wasp?

Here is a link to Nancy's Rainbow s Wasp plants for sale. She sells several a great price of $ 6.00 and up for starter plants which is an excellent price for wasp plants.
There are some good pictures of her blooming ones also.

Allison,

I love the Will-o-the-Wasp. That plant will definitely go on my wish list. Do you order from Rainbow Violets? Only one person has left feedback on garden watchdog.

BTW--It was nice seeing your picture. Now I can put a face with your name!

Stephanie

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

"Wasp" refers to single blossoms that have separate, very narrow, petal lobes.

Stephanie I have bought a lot from Nancy Rainbows and everything was always excellent :))

Thanks for the link to the explaination of "bustled" (compound and odd) leaves.

Allison: I looked at pictures of both "The Martian" and "Royal Wasp."
'The Martian' has dark-backed foliage while 'Royal' does not, right? That would make the one you sent me "The Martian."

Will-o-the-Wasp is great, along with those Girl-leaf wasps. (and variegated...)

Thanks, Kenton
Where is this picture? I want to see too. You can see an ungly picture of me on my DG page.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well James it is supose to be Royal Wasp if pot is marked it.
To me they look different side by side. Their blossoms look a lot a like.
Some definitiona for The Martin say Medium green, some just say Standard. Some say bustled. For years everyone called it The Martin by Dates..
Now their saying it's just Martin by Lyons. I still feel it's The Martin by Dates.

Royal Wasp
Says dark purple/blue blossoms over Medium to dark foliage
Blossoms look like an insect
See how they are so alike in description.
I proably bought both my leaves from Nancy rainbows , The Martin and Royal. She use to sell leaves.
I kept them marked , so I still feel it's Royal if what was marked on the pot.
Allison
Sorry to be confusing

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh Also Kenton both plants will or have bustled foliage. Sometime they bustle while babies sometimes not until their older. These are just babies I sent you. But both will have or get bustled foliage. Sometimes not all the leaves on a plant will have bustled foliage. They grow messy . But fun , unique , beautiful. I have grown almost all of them lol gave them away, sold some. I do have some of the new Vespa plants. Vespa Sensational two leaves only gave me four plants. I gave three away to wasp loving friends. Two in Canada and one my 83 year old friend I've sent her so many at least 12 wasp plants.
The Vespa seris of new wasp there are five of them and Tina only sold leaves on Ebya. The first couple of sets selling were $30.00 to $40.00 for each leaf set.
I was lucky I bought all five sets and paid around $ 14.00 for the most expensive set. Lucky I was out big on the others. Out of the five variety 3 made it for me . I kept one of each and of course my 83 yrs old friend gets one of each. I have sent her Snow Wasp, Royal, Martin, Celry, Lisa Louise , Wham Bang, Oh I trying to think lol but she loves them. Vespa Sensational.. and more. She sends me the $15.00 and I fill up the two priotiy boxes :)) She got about 6 boxes this year and will be awaiting the New Year when shipping gets better for more. Then after the Wasp I send her variegated plants, no minis or small plants they die on her . lol Heh she's edlerly I let her have the kind she likes. She treasures them :))
Oh well going on and on I have so many friends that like wasp. So a lot of them have gone in and in the USA and out :))

Allison, The Martian (Dates) that you sent me has one leaf with bustled foliage. I tried to take a photo but my camera had other ideas.

Hey Kenton, there's always Santa! I asked DH (er...uh... Santa) for the 'Violet of the Month Club' from the Optimira site. THey send 3 violets a month -some new releases, some oldies, but always named. We'll see what Santa leaves for me.

Lorry, here's a shot with The Martian in front (purple blossoms) that's Maggie Lee on the left front, you'll see Ultra Violet Dusk back left, Allegro Harvest Moonglow back right side and in front of that is the highly coveted King's Treasure.

Here are a few shots I took the other day, I just never could get my camera to focus how I wanted it to. Sometimes the 'auto' feature isn't the best thing.
Anyway here are a few.

You will have to look at each to see a different aspect of the plant, no one photo does it all.. :-(

Begonia you take wonderful pictures :)) Martin looks great ! They all do :)) I had a Martin plant in a 2 " plant wicked in mini Tea Pot in a window all natural light. And I'd put water in the Tea Pot everytime I remebered. One day I picked the pot up and I was oh my goodness. The roots were coming down all the holes and wraping around the wicking yarn lol. The plant had grown so fast seemed like over night it had to go into a 4 inch pot. Martin will grow large on leaf will get as big as your whole plant and the bustles get bigger too. And they bloom all the time natural or light tubes :))
I must ask you a question do you put the plants all together to take their pictures or are they like this all the time ?
Reason I metioned it's a good idea to spread them out, never touching room to work on them without knocking them, room for them to spread and grow, air circulation less chance of mold and mildew,
fungus Disease, powdery mildew...all things that can be bad and contagious and can kill plant. I just like the idea as they grow big faster and more uniform :)) Allison
Thanks ever so much for posting wonderful pictures I really enjoyed looking at them !

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh my god Violet! The chimera wasp is INCREDIBLE.
Do you know where I can get my hands on one of those?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lorry it's Nancy Rainbows the person on Ebay you bought Winnine the Pooh..she only sells it on Ebay. Allison
