If your looking for a plant / Kenton Space Cadet

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Well as I said Critter...my friend gave me some larger leaves to propagate of fisherman's paradise so I will put your name on one!
Also you too Begonia!

Hi, Allison.

You wrote the following about eBay:

"Then when I list it on Ebay the listing Fee is for an item under 9.95 is .35 cents and gallery .35 cents there is .70 cents I pay Ebay wether it sells or not. Then when and if it sells bay takes a final fee. Then is pople pay Pay Pal , you are charged another fee.
So say I list a set of leaves, or baby plant for $2.00 . Right off the top I owe Ebay . 70 cents. WHn and if it sells one a $2.00 item they take another . 11 cents. So I'm up to .owing Ebay .81 cents. Then if the Pay Pal Pal. The transaction for that amount is like .50 cents So I made . 70 cents on that plant or set of leaves.
Now don't forget everything you list you pay a listing fee even if it does not sell. Like I just sold 21 sets of leaves but I did not sell 22 sets of leaves and I still owe Ebay for the listings of 22 that did not sell :((.
Then you must take into account what the leaf to grow the plants, and the 9 months of care to do this off your profit.
So just say I did not count what it cost me to buy the leaf to grow the plant for 9 months to sell it...
One the $2.00 sale I made a whole . 70 cents . WOW and also don't forget you still owe Ebay for the 22 auctions I listed that did not sell. :(( So see it's extremly hard to make money. And even if some go higher Ebay charges a higher Final fee and Pay Pal charges a higher fees. lol
I give onehundred more away free just for shipping . This most times is better for me as with all the fees its extremly hard to make a lot of money."

I KNOW what you are talking about because my wife and I sell on eBay. We just got through selling some 60 old books on antique glass, and ended up selling the last 30 in one group to another dealer in an off-eBay deal because it meant we would not have to spend time listing them all, having maybe half of them not sell, paying the listing fee anyway, being paid via PayPal, who take out 2.9% PLUS 30 cents for each transaction, which brings the actual percentage they take up to as high as 6.5%, etc, etc, etc.

Have you thought about, or do you have, your own website, or at least your own eBay store? Either of those would be cheaper than listing on separate auctions on eBay time and time again.

Yippeeeeeeee! Oh, thank you, Lorry! I'm *very* excited about that one! :-)

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh anything for you Ms Critter :)
But say a prayer for the leaf *Laugh* I am still new to propagating leaves..IF they don't pup..I will get more leaves from my friend to send you come spring *wink*
But definitely keep your fingers crossed for leaf success :)

I had a store for a while the $49.00 aeach month and. Even though listing fees are much lowers theres a fee to list, a final fee and Pay Pal and then a monthly store fee wether you sell or not. Now also from the store your price is set in stone no chance of any bidding making it go higher.
I tried it for a few months. But if I took what the monthly sote fee was, listing fees yes low but still fees, they upped the stores final fees and now people could not bid giving you a hcnace to make a little extra $$
once in a while. I was not and do not sell enough to make it worth paying a monthly fee for a store and if tings don't sell, and still small listing fees, higher final fee , still Pay Pal ee , if your not a big seller it's not worth it , as it's still costing.
Do you have a store to save money ? If not why ?
I don't really want to be a seller, I'd rather give them away free to friends that will love and care for them.
It's fun trying to sell a few here and there . If I make extra $$ I can buy more leaves to have more plants to share :)) I grow for enjoyment
and addicted to putting leaves down.
I was just trying to make a point a seller selling African violets...that took 9 months plus to grow, and all the cost into growing it , they are not making much chnage :((

My fingers are crossed, Lorry.... but you'll do fine!

Nope, not hardly worth it, Allison. Thanks for the information!

Allison is 100% correct on the eBay stuff. I used to sell jewelry and beads that I designed. A few summers ago I made a nice little chunk of change. But the fees kill you!

I was just lucky enough at the time to 'be in the right place at the right time'. Couldn't do it today because the demand for those types of beads does not exist.

I'm sure Allison that the packing & shipping alone took all day! I've seen how meticulous you pack your AV's and I can just imagine the time put into it. When you figure what you end up making as an hourly wage, it's not that much. But it can be a nice little bit of cash to keep the addictions going!

Yes I buy large rolls thick insulation, lunch baggies 3 on each plant, Styrofoam cups....heat packs . Well it take me and hour or 2 to do a box but I'm disabled . Thats just doing the plants hubby makes the boxes and tapes them up. Allison

I dont' know critter..I lost some to rot..i don't know if that is normal to lose some of them or not.
I did find out some I got from a friend were chimera..and well now that I know..that won't happen or will get a new kind of plant. I still left them up though..to see what they can do.
I have quite a few leaves of plants I don't have yet..they seem to have been down forever and not doing anything..but the ones I didn't lose to rot right away, seem to still be alive..so here is ahoping :)

Wow! I have purchased a few things from Ebay over the years and had thought of selling some but now that I have read all of this I'd just as soon not. Sounds like trading, buying from people on this or other forum is the smartest thing although I did enjoy the back and forth with some of the sellers.

Thing is, eBay is really just about a monopoly on on-line auctioning. There is Yahoo Auctions, but they are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay behind eBay, and any other on-line auctions are even farther behind. They don't even count. And eBay buys any company that starts doing significant side business off them, like PayPal and Bidnapper. So eBay can pretty nearly charge what they want. Also, it seems to me that eBay has become much more of a wholesale marketplace than a place where people can sell items and really get what they're worth. Everyone is looking for the Big Bargain on eBay now. Yep, the fees have gotten very bad, but there really isn't any other place to go.
