OK, time to confess! Bulb orders PART II.

Here's another trillium pic - I think its Trilium Erectum but not sure.

Thanks for the heads up on Naomi, Kenton, I won't waist the $. I would really like a nice assortment of sunrise-sunset tones of callas; I've ordered and used them as cut flowers from New Zealand and they're so gorgeous. Those waxy blooms last and last. Just gotta grow 'em!

The Trillium grandiflorum is thick as theives here, and there are quite a few red mixed in, but I'm not sure of the species. Some nod like yours, Tammy, but others look identical, but don't nod. Suppose it's 2 species? I planted some T.lutea and prairie trillium this fall; they were a steal from ebay. Hoping they're as happy here as the wildlings.

ALM in Baytown: The only callas I have seen bloom so far are Green Goddess. Slowly but surely they are multiplying and each time the blooms are more dramatic--I have 8 plants planted together.

I got some regular white calla in a trade, which I have potted until I decide where I will put in my garden, and at present they are lush and green but no flowers.

Then I got some Picasso last November, and I see green shoots right now but no flower. Finally, I just got Flame and Pink and look forward to those beautiful color blooms.

Green Goddess is planted inground, part shade. They are close to a faucet but I don't recall having to give them extra water. The other callas are planted inground in full sun.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

I will have to get some Green Goddess since you have had success with them in our area. I'll have to track down my neighbor this spring and see what s/he has and does to them. I've never seen them outside working in their yard so... Thanks for the info.

oh and it might be wet summers and dry winters... like i said mine aren't blooming lol I've got the bottom of the pot mine are in sitting in my water feature so I'll just leave them there this summer and see how they do then too.

Brecks - I had problems getting my stuff too. Probably got them 2-3 months after I ordered them. But they come from Holland and they say to expect a long ship time on them... But they never updated the website to tell me when they shipped until about 3 days before I got them... so not sure about them. I probably won't order from them again myself unless its something I have to have and no one else has it!

Thanks all!

Alm, as i think about it some more, I don't believe my Green Goddess bloomed the first year. In fact, I was waiting for spring blooms and they didn't bloom until the following January! I can't tell you exactly when I got them, 3-4 years ago. I do recall blooms last a long time. Too bad if you missed the Brent&Beckys sale, I think they were 3 for $8 and they're usually a lot more for a single bulb. I you can stand it (but I never can, lol) I would wait til next Dec for the sale.

WHO AM I KIDDING!!! I CAN'T DO THAT, CAN YOU?????

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL!

I think I'll probably have to. Vanveen has some 5 for $10 but it looks like I would have to wait till September for delivery...

I might have gotten my numbers mixed up. Easy to Grow Bulbs have calla Green Goddess at 3 X 7.95. Way less than I paid when I bought them elsewhere.

not me but sounds like something I should get. nice!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I stopped at my LGS to pick up Neem Oil (really! that was the only thing I was going to purchase! ;-).....

Their big bins of amaryllis bulbs were gone, but they had some potted up amaryllis that had been marked down. I completely failed to resist a 'Striped Panther' (red & white) that I suddenly had to have for Valentine's Day. It was only marked down to $15, but I rationalized that it was in a cute ceramic pot that I probably would've been willing to pay $5 for, so suddenly it seemed like a $10 bargain! LOL! DH just shook his head and carried it to the car.

(edited because it bugs me to miss a typo, even late at night)

Corte Madera, CA

oh, no! now i feel such a fool for backing down on the amaryllis in pots at wal-mart =(.

i did get neem-oil today! pure, it says.

tomorrow, i'm off to get VF-11 for my bulbs and brugs.

somewhere, PA

Propably a stupid question but what's VF-11?

And Critterologist - great job! You'll have a nice Valentines
Day decoration and a wonderful new pot for next year's haul. ;-)

Corte Madera, CA

tammy, of course not. i just recently heard of this one when looking for hormex. then i asked around at the brug forum, and read the testimonials. i want to try!

here's the product info.

http://www.vf-11plantfood.com/

i hope that's helpful.

Thanks Annapet. Interesting! Have you tried aspirin? I know I've read it elsewhere on
DG and first saw it in Avant Gardener. Quite interesting story.
Tam

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey, that's the same plant food that Allison (Violet_Treasure) has been recommending over in the AV forum.... Now my curiosity has really been piqued!

I'll have to check whether my Neem oil is pure.... it says "triple action" on the label, but I didn't read the fine print (*slaps wrist*).

Corte Madera, CA

Have not tried aspirin, but started reading the aspirin thread on the Brug Forum.

On neem, Kell (one of my fairies) mentioned the one that Lowe's carry is super. Does not solidify when temp is low. I wish there's Lowe's nearby, but not yet.

BTW, J&P Roses are in Costco already.

Annapet

P.S.
Another thing for us to do while we're waiting for our bulbs to sprout!

somewhere, PA

I've got freesia & ranunculus sprouting already! Yippee. (Now if they'd just finish popping up and start blooming.)

Corte Madera, CA

cool!

crocuses are the harbingers of spring here.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Annapet, how cold does it get there? Do you have to precool your spring bulbs? I assumed in your zone many bulbs would'nt get enough cooling. I'm seeing pips of snowdrops and daffodils! It was in the 50s today and the sun was shining, so I got a good day outside discovering signs of pre-spring. Even got a good start on the "hill of my discontent". Now those beautiful, moss covered stones are exposed and the tree seedlings and raspberries have been removed. The soil looks great there to, so I think I'm going to be really glad it's started. I keep envisioning those eye level stones being the perfect backdrop for interesting small bulb plants. And the places where I can use cascading plants are making me giddy!
Happy New Year to all! Neal.

somewhere, PA

I actually was able to plant the bulbs my mom had from Brecks yesterday!
It was raining Thurs and hail/sleet/snow today so I feel very lucky to have been
able to plant 'em. No signs of spring outside here but I know those freesia
and ranunculus will bloom just as I can't stand winter any longer.

Happy New Year to all you too!

Denver, CO

Neal, bulbs in front of stones has been quite a subject between a friend and I. ("Loamy Lady," and I'm "Silty Gent"...)

She has a bad back, so I do a great deal of work for her. We're both not only gardeners, but rockhounds. We have quarried some great basalt boulders to our gardens. Whenever she (or I, for that matter) bought bulbs or ordered bulbs, she would assign them to the rocks, after all: "Wouldn't (they) look nice around that Basalt?"

Well, the area around them are now anywhere from double to triple planted with bulbs. I suppose that once an area developes its charm, it just becomes some sort of bulb magnet! I will post pictures of her garden in the spring. It is one of those little downtown gardens that everyone passing by stops to look at.

Happy New Year; 2006 is the next year of the Garden! (Aren't they all?)"

neal, mid-30's. frost is rare, and sometimes we get snow but it melts right away. my garage gets pretty cold, and last year, that's where my bulbs stayed until they started to grow. planted bulbs late january and got blooms in march. i've been reading about local gardening here, and they say december-january is the best time to plant them.

here's my january-planted tulips that bloomed in march. 8" across, open. tape measure i always carry around now when i do my yard walk. is that a common practice? or i'm just a weirdo? lol.

tammy, my breck bulbs are way better than the bloomingbulbs bulbs i received this year.

oh, i dream of a show-stopper of a yard! kenton, i hope you post photos.

Annapet, I envy your zone; you've got the best of both worlds! That's a beautiful vase of tulips to. I had to chuckle when you said you carry a tape measure in the garden, hehehe:) Size really does matter!

Loamy Lady and Silty Gent... I like it! Hmmm, trying to decide, should I be Sand dude or Gravel Guy, LOL.

somewhere, PA

Annapet - I left my tape measure in the field I was measuring last year
to put in a new bed. Hit it with the lawn mower and got a huge mess!
Little strips of inches everywhere. My DH gave me a new one with a
belt clip for my birthday. And those tulips are gorgeous!

Here's a pot of florists cyclamen I started from seed about 3-4yrs ago.
Its great to have color here.

Neal - I like Sand Dude! but both are great.

Tammy, that cyclamen is amazing! And that you started from seed is fantastic! I salute you: you're the Seed Queen! Your cool greenhouse is so perfect for so many of these winter bloomers; I bet the freesia and ranunculus are loving it. I have pots of each under lights (and in a window, for what good it does), and the sprouts look healthy and happy, so we'll see. A fun winter experiment anyway. I think Sand Dude is it; mostly sandy soil here, and I like the dude-dune sound LOL. Neal.

somewhere, PA

Thanks Neal! I just bought some lights and set them up in the basement. Its really warm with the furnace
so close. I'm going to try starting seeds there too. Hoping constant temp might help. (Plus I can put a
cover on them w/o toasting them in the heat of the sun). Seed Queen! I like it.

Denver, CO

(Chuckling aloud) I will ahve to tell her abour Sand Dude. This friend has 2 Galanthus blooming!

Holy Vixen, what is the name of that tulip, Annapet?

Tammy, I just collected a pod of Cyclamen (florist's) a couple nights ago. It is still a bit green, and I am keeping the stem inwater hoping to ripen it. What size is the seed and what conditions does one provide?

Kenton

somewhere, PA

Kenton,

I'll send you seeds from mine but it'll be a few months. I think they're typically brown when
I get them (I get them from seed exchanges). I put them in a pot with moist seed starting
mix and then put the pot into a zip lock bag. Then the bag goes in a drawer in a cooler
room. You have to remember to check on them or they'll germinate & die in the dark. I did
this once. ;-( They need dark to germinate.

Tam

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

wow, didn't even know you could grow cyc. from seed. Tammy you are the seed queen.

Annapet, name of tulip, please. I had to get my tape out. Those were some huge flowers!
