A few more, here are Morton, McCoy, shawnee and Bauer. (pardon my messy office) This stand has since given way to brugmansia cuttings rooting in a bubbler!

Here's the same stand before it gave way to AV's! (again, pardon my mess!)

Here are a few others Shawnee, McCoy and some unknown. The little blue cups are some unknown maker, they are custard cups, perfect for AV leaves.

Begonia,

Oh my goodness! Absolutely the most beautiful collection of glassware that I've ever seen. I am so envious. Your violets will look beautiful in those! Someday when my kids are older and I don't have to worry about them breaking things, I am going antiquing (sp?). Right now, little hands around breakables makes me nervous.

BTW--is that an epi in the second picture on the top shelf? I love its color!

Some more Shawnee and others. Catalina pottery I think and maybe Camark.

Holy Bovine. Now there, Ladies and Gents, is a Collector.

Stephanie, yes and no. It is a 'disocactus ramulosus' or so I believe. It is labeled 'red rhipsalis' (another of my obsessions) but I am a bit confused as to it's proper name, but I believe that is it. I bought it in Maui a few months ago. I've since propagated a leaf.

I know what you mean about the little ones. Mine are teens now, but don't think it changes as they get older - at least with boys that is. My son is constantly flipping basketballs and footballs around. I finally told him that for each ball bounce I hear I'm going to charge him a dollar. He's got a business mind even at 13 and I haven't heard a ball bounce for a few weeks. not in the house anyway. (grin)

You'd be surprised what I find at garage sales and thrift stores. In fact the white av pots in the 'new shelf' photo were 50 cents - I got two of them and they were brand new! Most of those pots run between $1-15.00, some a friend gave me that he found at a thrift store. They are fun to find. The part I really love about them is to think of the gardener (I like to envision an older lady) that had them back in 1940 or 1950. I see them in a little bungalow with african violets and tiny philodendron filling them. It's just fun to think of their history, who may have had them and so on.

One clay pot that I keep filled with semperfloren begonia 'Linda' has beautiful garland and gargoyle heads all around the pot. It belonged to a gardener woman who had the most amazing gardens I have seen as 'private' gardens. She passed away and DH was the real estate agent for her estate. The caretaker gave me the pot knowing what a garden nut I am. It has huge sentimental value to me just knowing how much history it's seen in it's lifetime. I never even knew the lovely lady.

sorry to get carried away and soooo far off topic...

Begonia,

Don't apologize for such a wonderful story! I too am very sentimental and enjoy having things with a "history." For now, I content myself with my family "treasures" since I really can't tow around a 3 yo, 4 yo and 7 yo.

What a fantastic collection!!!!!! i guess I must be on the lookout now, lol!
Thank you for your welcome! I just adore my Violets, have had them for YEARS!!!! I mistreat them, I overhead water, I know I shouldn't, I wash the leaves with warm water, and they always look so great! Oh, and I forget to fertilize a lot. They must really like it on the window sill and small table against another window! When they bloom I make everyone look at the beautiful flowers! I have 2 bi-color leaved, a little krinkled at the edges.

JamesCO,

At the top of the thread you have some beautiful plants in the water. What are they?

I hope to get another aquarium shortly and would like plants. The last time I had an aquarium was about 45 years ago and the only thing that was live was anacharis and another, I think was called parrot something-or-other. (And, of course, the fish.lol)

Thanks

Hap

Happy_1 Welcome :)) I don't think James saw this posting of yours. The plants are his African violets ! Oh you mean in the water ? sorry James will have to answer that one . Welcome again. Do you have African violets !

hanna1 welcome :)) Hope you both enjoy our African violet forum. Tell us about yourselves and plants :))

Welcome, Happy.

Oh grief... I have to think about that... When those aquatic plants (big ones) are happy, they are vivapirous like Spider plants. I found aquatic grass to be very hard to establish, thus that is fake. (A sin, Yes.)

Yes, tell us about yourelves!

OOooooo.... what a wonderful combination of plants and pottery. (And fish!) Begonia, I just love your pots you've found - many of them remind me things I grew up with: pottery at Grandma's house, Aunt Penny's, Aunt Senna's....

and I too have accepted Allison's wonderful & generous AV gift. We have agreed to wait for her to ship them until after the holidays! So I'm viewing all of your "spots" and lights and shelf units.... and making plans for the arrival of the leaves & plants she has offered. I can hardly wait!

I have been attempting to get a few leaves going: my first attempts. One of them I rooted in water, and then planted (by adding perlite & soil at slow intervals), but no ears or babies yet. I did this all before I had any idea of how to do it ~ a leaf broke off a large plant and I thought "dang" and put it in a small water glass to see if it would root. When it did, that's when I started adding soil. I guess it will start a family soon.....

Happy end of the week to all.....

I'm an avid Cactus and Succulent collector, over 300 to date. I love yardening and can't seem to get enough flowers, lol, many many!!!! I have a few houseplants that I baby, running out of room, somehow I always seem to squeeze one more in, I also collect Orchids, different kinds, they give me much pleasure, but my Violets bloom all year, real troopers, now you all have me thinking about getting some (real) ones, I went online and went gaga over quite a few!!!! i think I may just get addicted to more now!
Again, thanks for the welcome,
Annie

Nothing much to tell about me. I have 5 AV that are still reeling from Hurricane Wilma as is the rest of my yard. My orchids, well over half of them died from a swim in the pool. The one AV that is doing the best although it hasn't bloomed as yet is one that I put under some plants in the yard. It is getting big and sassy...lol

That's all she wrote folks..

BTW, thanks for the infor on the aquarium plants.....

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I love the aquarium idea!!! I am going to have to think that one through and make it a reality in my house!!! I've always wanted fish as well as water lilies!!! ohhhhh, I won't be able to sleep, 'cause I won't be able to turn my thinking off!!!!

Denver, CO

Happy: I will find the name of that thing for you... It drives me nuts not to know something I should.
I would send you a baby, but I haven't had those since I started putting seed pots on the tank and blocking the light. I think that four overhead tubes would make them grow properly. ( A friend of minn grows coral fragments {acropora, gonopora...) and makes some money selling them. After much experimentation and failure, he says that the key to it is light. He has spent hundreds of dollars on bulbs alone for this!)

I'm glad you like it, Anitabryk2. I have grown Waterlilies indoors but they need as much flourescent light as you can give them, (four tubes at least) and tropicals seem to do better than common hardy ones, which often only grow small underwater leaves until they fade away. I had two very nice little blue plants that I had in a 20 gallon bucket. I forgot to bring them in from the outdoor pond in th fall of 2004. (Blast it, they were rare, too.)

Kenton,

Thank you so much for the offer, but I don't have a tank as yet. It is somewhere down the road, but soon. I just have to decide where to put it for the most enjoyment.

Allison, I've had my tank for over 5 years now. Scuba diving got me hooked on fish. I have a fresh water tank and keep an angel fish, an algae eater, three tetra, a mickey-mouse platty and a suicidal plechostomus. Honestly he jumps out of the tank every so often and I find him on the floor covered in cat or dog fur. In fact he jumped yesterday. I found the cat (Thing 1) playing with him. I just tossed him back in the tank. One time I found him and I guess he'd been out for some time because he was dry as a bone. I thought for sure he was dead, but when I picked him up, he wriggled around so I once again tossed him back in the tank. He's got plenty of 'battle scars'. Imagine this, he manages to leap out of a 1" opening. I need to get it covered!

Anyway, my tank is next to my bed and I have the timer set to turn the lights on about 20 minutes before the alarm goes off in the morning. Usually the lights wake me up and I just lay there and watch the fish swim around. It's a great way to wake up! They are so beautiful!

Good luck with your tank, hopefully you'll post some photos when you get it set up.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

WOW sounds beautiful :)) I guess you could not put African violets on top the fish would keep knocking them off. lol
Sounds so pretty ! Allison

Denver, CO

I have the very same thing, Begonia. It is hard not to get up when those fish are begging for food. I have a chinese Algea eater, since Plecos are suicidal and big! Unfortunately, that Algea eater was not alone to begin with, his friend was eaten by the cichlids... They can be rather mean somedays.

I'm going to try to get a picture of my fish when they are eating. They are otherwise camera shy, but too beautiful to miss.

Kenton

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

What a cool idea!! I would love to have the tank in my room and have the light wake me up!! As it is the sun coming up does a great job, but what a great idea!!! Then I could have plants in my bedroom, which is normally not bright enough for plants.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes Anitabryk2 it does sound like a Heavenly ideas. Sweet dreams
and a bright tomorrow :))

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

yippee

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

The pleco was my son's fish, when he got bored and the fish got too large for his tank, I took him to my tank. They must be like those mud-skippers who can live either in or out of water. He seems to do just as well out of the tank as in. Half of the scars are from the cats gnawing on him. They (the cats) are so well fed that they just play with him, no need to eat him.
This guy also goes through phases of burrowing. I look in the tank and don't see him so I think, 'Well, the cats finally ate him' and when I fee the fish, he pokes his head out of the gravel. He's really a character. MAybe you all can help me come up with a clever name that suits his reckless personality.

I love to feed them brine shrimp 'popsickles' too - they go crazy for it.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Popsickles? realy wow. How large is he ? Do you have a picture. Allison

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

They're called something like gumdrops, and are a gumdrop sized lump of frozen brine shrimp. I have a box in the freezer and I'll try and get some photos.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

oh very interesting ~ Thanks for sharing !!!
