Calystegia incognita

Goodlettsville, TN(Zone 6a)

I originally posted this photo on the ID forum of "the other site" back in May or thereabouts.

It is from my San Diego vacation back in April. I took this in Torry Pines State Park, California.
Have you ever seen those spots on Calystegia blooms?

Before you ask, they are spots, not holes. They are in about the same place on each petal of both blooms.

I did not realize that this was an unusual specimine at the time so I did not investigate very thoroughly. I do not know if there is one or two plants here.

Hi Kevin,
I've not seen spotting like that on any Calystegia before...the degree of spotting looks much more pronounced on the upper bllom,in fact in I don't see much spotting at all on the lower bloom...
California has more species, subspecies and varieties of Calystegia than any other place in the entire world and since so many of them look almost identical, coupled with the very invasive tendency of many(but not all!) species,I've usually set my sights on other genera of MG's...
I'd be interested in some material from this spotted version should you ever have the oppurtunity to gather any seeds or rhizomes...
Interesting photo..

Thanks for the comment, Ron.

If I get back to CA this year, I'll definitly go back to that park and have a look in that spot.

In the meantime, here are some other photos of Calystegia that I took that day. Non-spotted. I only saw the spotted in the one spot.
