Can someone tell me which U.S. zone would relate to central Essex UK. I am a couple of miles from the driest place in England. We get some rain but can go 3 weeks without. Temp range is mid 80's in summer to just below freezing in winter. Very occasionally we can have a heavy frost but not for long. We rarely get snow. Plants like bougainvillia will not survive outside in winter or citrus trees but ceanothus, fig & passion flower are fine.

U.S. Zones & the U.K.
Europe can't really be compared to the US in the USDA zone maps, our summers are cooler, our winters are milder and our season lengths differ from the majority of America. However, we do sort of equate to zone 8 if that helps.

US zone 8 would be about right if you were talking about the Pacific Northwest.Zone 8 here in the South is another matter alltogether. We also go by heat extremes for our zones and use eastern and western designations.Zone 8 eastern would have temps that range from as cold as 20 degrees below freezing in the winter to temps well over 100f in the summers.Factoring in the heat index (humidity and wind) temps could be calculated in the 115f range in the summers,
Zone 8 western does not have quite the extremes that we in the east do.It's not nearly as hot and it rains more frequently.I've got European relatives and we have pretty much agreed that the Pacific Northwest is probably the closest thing to your weather.
Hi Ros,
I am in Zone 7,but a very wet cool zone 7!! We do get mild winters..milder than the ones I remember in NYC,but with the exception of a few summers, the temps rarely go above 32°-35°c here. Here is a map that might help:

Your link says I am in Zone 9 - does that relate to the USA?
Ros
That would depend on the winter temps(cold hardiness),Ros,but the Heat index would be different. Here is another site for you:http://www.flytrap.demon.co.uk/links/usdazone.htm
That has everything!!http://gardening.about.com/homegarden/gardening/cs/msub77/index.htm?iam=dpile&terms=%2BEuropean+%2Bgarden+%2Bzones
Here is another, and another..http://gardening.about.com/homegarden/gardening/cs/msub79/index.htm?iam=dpile&terms=%2BEuropean+%2Bgarden+%2Bzones and another..http://www.gardenersnet.com/atoz/hardy.htm and something about heat zones:http://www.ahs.org/publications/heat_zone_map.htm
