Help! Can I root the leaves?

Scotts Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Hello all!

I just received the African Violet "Feather" that I ordered off of Ebay. It's a plant in a 4" pot.

Anyway, during shipping 4 of the leaves snapped off at the base of the leaf, with virtually no stem. My question is, can I root the leaf without any stem? It seems such a shame to throw the leaves away.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

For me, leaves with no stem are a little more prone to rotting before they root, but sometimes they root just fine. I've even seen mention of "stretching" the propagation from a single leaf by cutting it apart and rootins some pieces as well as the center with the stem (probably I saw this on the culture pages at www.robsviolet.com) You can sort of tuck the base of the leaf down into the soil, firming it in well so it stands somewhat upright. It's certainly worth a try!

Welcome Taz.... I rooted a leaf with no stem of Feather 8 weeks ago. I have three baby plants that have appeared. I looked the plant up on the avsa site. It it very beautiful. It's the first time I have seen variegated wavy leaves.

Glad you posted. Hope to hear more from you.

Thanks for that link, Allison -- the little picture showing the wedges with their babies was helpful!

Maybe I need to add even more perlite to the mix or something when I do wedges or stemless leaves, as I lose about half of them.

That is a really lovely plant!! And you say the beautiful ruffled leaves are also variegated?!? Nanna, if you have a plantlet that is not yet promised, I would love to work it into our next trade....

I also wanted to add a warm welcome to the AV forum for Ms_Tazmin!

I have a leaf rooting now that was without a stem. I placed it in my propagating tray which contains 100% perlite. I just barely surrounded the base with perlite and used a bamboo skewer to hold it upright (vertical). I keep the tray on a heated propagation mat and it has a 1/4" root on it now. I started several this way but found that if they even tilt backwards just slightly that too much condensation collects on the back of the leaf. So I lost a few, but this one is happy.

WOW Nanna that's neat. When you are propagating and use heated propagation mat , or any method of warming your leaves/babies
help them grow fastr also. You have a great set up thereee :))
Thanks for sharing , Allison

I'm afraid my Feather leaf bit the big one. :(

I'm still working on my leaf-rooting skills. I'm better with roses, I'm afraid.

Well, hope springs eternal. :)

Marilee you should keep trying again. We have all killed many leaves. Some just die for no reason. Maybe even an old leaf. Don't give up ! You can do it:))

I am still not having luck with progapating chimera by stem cuttings though..but still trying :) I want to get this down with my Monique so when my Alps is big enough..I will be able to share it around.

Well my trailing Chimeria blessed me with bunch of bloom stalk basket babies that grew fast than the sucker .And they bloomed very young.

I am getting bloom stalk basket babies but I lost the first two I tried to root :(
So still working on it

Leave them on Mom long time even after flower dies.
I wicked my thumb print pots. I cut stem so when it went into pots it went all the way down basket touching flus with soil. They root within days-week.
I water and feed them ! Lots of light 12-16 hours a day, kept warm. Don't let dry out but don't keep soggy.
Here are some of my Sunray Trail basket babies :))

Ok..that is probably what I was doing wrong. I was plucking them from mom perhaps too early :)
I will take your advice and see if I can't get monique to give me some babies :)
They are just ADORABLE Allison :)
