I have a leaf rooting now that was without a stem. I placed it in my propagating tray which contains 100% perlite. I just barely surrounded the base with perlite and used a bamboo skewer to hold it upright (vertical). I keep the tray on a heated propagation mat and it has a 1/4" root on it now. I started several this way but found that if they even tilt backwards just slightly that too much condensation collects on the back of the leaf. So I lost a few, but this one is happy.
