HG Blooming

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Well, finally ONE bloom, tomorrow it should be at it's fullest...then I am ripping out the plant, sending it to live at 4000' by the volacano....anyone want a cutting before I do? I will post a picture when it opens up.....

Smugly smiling, Carol

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Congratulations, Carol. I've read that they don't bloom very much. I received a cutting in May and in all that time it has sent out several suckers but it has not "Yed" yet.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I do I do!! Yes Please! *raising arm in the air*

Oh how rude of me... Please forgive the newbie..

Congratulations! I'm happy for you.
Do share that photo soon!

OK. Will probably cut when I can get a friend to come for the whole plant. It wants COOL,
ZZsBabiex...Lodi, Ca?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Are you sure it wants cool, Carol? It sure was not happy here.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Kell,
Looks like we are in the same zone, so I may be subjecting these cutting to a death sentence if she were to send some?
I don't want to do that for sure.. I am over anxious, but I don't want to set myself up for failure.

Corte Madera, CA

woo-hoo, carol! HG blooming!

joyce, no harm in trying, right??? who knows, maybe HG will bloom for you, too.

kell, it's the shortest brug i have, and it will be a year old next month. it's a member of my "brug of shame." it's so short, hubby calls it ANNAPET.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Kell...no, not sure...seems I had read that somewhere. Anyway, it is occupying a primo spot on the road and for one bloom a year...it can go elsewhere!!!!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Congrats, Carol! I've got no blooms this year. I think I have mine in too much shade this year. Is yours in full sun or part sun? I think mine gets shade all day. Here's a picture from last year:

Took a picture this morning...will load this afternoon. She has 2 skirts dropped and a third still tucked in....and the color is a pale yellow with orange streaks. Wierd.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Carol, mine started out that way too. It will darken.

Hmmmm, maybe I will grow her in the back someplace. She is growing in pretty much full sun during midday hours...

Carol

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh ZZ I would not bother with it. It is so capable of being just beautiful but it hates to bloom. Anywhere from what I see on the boards. I had a couple huge ones for several years. Last year I got buds but they dropped before opening which HG is known for. This year it didn't even bother to bud so my DH killed them dead.

There are so many nicer brugs around that will flower like crazy for you. HG is is just one frustrating brug as far as I am concerned. It was hot when we didn't have any other doubles or triples in color. But now we do. I had a triple orange bloom this month from a Creamsickle cross, so I know more and better ones are coming!!! I am not the only one crossing Creamsickle!

Also this next summer there will be so many double pinks out too for all of us. And so many seeds. I bet before the end of the summer you have a great double pink of your own!

I understand Carol. Out it must go!!! I really think it is genetically flawed.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Oh, Carol....I'd love to try a cutting if you're game to send one for postage reimbursement.

I got one in a trade this spring.....and it started to grow beautifully *indoors* but croaked when I placed it *outdoors* (I think it got/stayed too wet.)
Maybe I'll keep the next one indoors!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Kell, I agree with you about HG. I think it was just beginner's luck that I was able to get a couple of blooms out of her.

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Oh my goodness.. that is one beautimous flower. Nan, I'll be crossing my fingers for you. I've admired it from afar but don't believe, even with my microclimate, that it would bloom for me.
:-(
I'm going to wait for one of the new crosses.. or might even try for one of my own! (Lord, can you see me praying??)

Barb

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I really think with some brugs we make ourselves mad trying to get them to bloom well when they are incapable of blooming well ever. It is in the genes. I have been really paying attention to the ones I have that put on a nonstop show. I rather have one that is not so beautiful if it puts out all the time then a beauty that that rarely graces me with her beauty! .

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Yes, I agree with you, Kell. Fragrance is very important to me also, and I think it might be second on the list of importance after blooming habit, and appearance is third.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Especialy if the brug mass flowers, who looks at the blooms individually but us nuts? Tom always laughs when I explain the differences between brugs. He sees none! And I think most people do not. They just notice the mass effect of color.

Fragrance has never been that important to me. I like the bright gaudy look the best. Though if all smelled like Arborea, I would be in heaven. Most others, I can take or leave. Sometimes it is too overpowering. Now I can't wait to smell my plumies, Clare. I hope it is a scent I love.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

You will love the fragrance of plumerias, Kell. The neat thing is that, they are so complex genetically, some can smell like classic plumerias, some like roses, some like coconut suntan lotion, some like jasmine, some like gardenia, some like peaches, some like grape koolaid, and so on. Each one has its own specific fragrance. Some fragrances are strong and some are mild, and one or two have none. Like Brugmansias, the species often smell the best. Oh, and boy are there gaudy flowers too! LOL! Carol here on this thread has a daughter named Jennifer who runs a plumeria business out of Hawaii called Maui Plumeria Gardens! She also has a talk plumeria forum. How's that for a small world?

It stopped raining for a second so I went out and got a picture of some of my good bloomers today. Here's Pink Beauty.

I wonder if Carol grows any plumies. I can't wait for all of mine to bloom. I have a lot now and I have never seen one bloom. I am so easy to get going! LOL

Your Frosty is amazing for its trunk is huge. So didn't lose CG to "SB"? That is interesting. I wonder if it is resistent.

Have you smelled Arborea Clare? If so which plumie smells like that? I will run out and get one right away. I love that smell and would love to be able to bring it indoors.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

I think I asked Carol that once, and I think she replied that she doesn't. Kell, that is Pink Beauty, not Frosty! I don't have any more Frosty. I did lose a huge CG to SB, but that one in the picture is a different one that I had in a container and just planted in the ground a few months ago when I re-did that side of the yard. It is on the other side of the front yard, and I am watching it very carefully for SB. I just got rid of my Whiskers because I figured it had it even though it wasn't showing signs of it yet. PB and the other B. versicolors seem to be resistant to it. Monika confirmed that B. versicolors don't get SB.

I haven't smelled B. arborea yet and don't have one yet, but I will get one someday:-)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Mumbled brain, I sure didn't mean Frosty. LOL. It is gorgeous!! You will die over Arborea's smell Clare. Deja vu??? LOL. You are on my list when I make cuttings.

Good luck with CG! I thought you had lost it before.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

We have some plummies, and our daughter owns Maui Plumeria Gardens...but they don't thrill me. I like the Singapores which don't lose their leaves....I don't like looking at skeletons all winter.

Re: HG...and all other plants that becomes a 'challenge'. Why? Life is too short!!! Looking forward to many of the new hybrids coming out (Kell, please remember me!!!). Heck...I have so many seed pods ....

Are P&C seeds viable...or will they simply sprout albino seeds? Mine has a big pod and Creamsickle is not far away!!!

Carol

Eureka, CA

Okay... half these acronyms I'm not following! :o( Very much a newbie. I have two plants, very recently purchased, never even seen a bloom close up! But I'm determined! What's HG, and why such a challenge? Should I ask for that challenge? Heck, Carol, if you were really going to throw it into the volcano, I'd love a cutting for postage.... Let me know!!

Sanna

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sanna, I have come to the conclusion HG is not a challenge at all. It has defective genes.

Carol, I will, do not worry. Grow the creamsickle seeds. I am so impressed so far with mine grown and with Barbs from that dear girl. Are they love seeds? Or from an arranged marriage?

Now you will have me looking up Singapores which don't lose their leaves. LOL. Clare has me gaga over plumerias. Have you ever looked at all she downloads into the PLantfiles here? Beauties for sure. I am such a gaud queen. LOL

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I am wondering if Desiree is going to be like Herrenhauser Graten. I finally got buds about two weeks before frost. I had to cut the top off the plant and put it in the bubbler. Has anyone gotten blooms on Desiree in a season?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Kell. I did actually lose a huge CG to SB, but this one is a different tree that I got from a different source, and I'm watching it for signs in case it is in the soil here.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Clare your brugs are gorgeous! I luv, luv the two tone one. Is that one the Herrenhauser Graten??? Now Carol if you need to get rid of any of your brugs, I can catch very well!
;) Donna

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

HAHA...Kell, look up Singapor Dwarfs...deep green foliage, slow growers...cool plummies.

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

Nembies,
I am also a newbie, but this was posted recently. It's the abbreviations for brugs. I don't know how to hyperlink it ,but type this in to the address and see if you get it. It has helped me with the lingo.

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

I've still got a couple blooming....particularly my Dr. Suess. It must like the cooler weather. It's going down to 40 degrees tonight and is loaded with blooms, so we'll see. I'll have some nice cuttings of this and a peach (name unknown, but very fragrant) that I'll be glad to send. These would be good for newbies as I got them as a newbie. They did well in NC on the coast and I brought cuttings with me in the early summer when I moved to the FL Panhandle and they've done great. Guess they're Frequent Flyers, huh? Anyway, I'll posting the availablility after this last bloom flush.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Donna and thanks! Yes, that is Herrenhauser garten, HG, before it turns solid orange.

Kell, Carol is right that Dwarf Singapore Pink and Dwarf Singapore White are cool! I love all of the species ones too.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Carol
I wouldn't put HG in a cooler area
When we were getting a cold snap one year,(frost Memorial Day....Just not right!) I had thrown all the brugs on the porch and covered the outside in plastic. It got pretty cold
The versi and the HG were the ones that didn't make it,I really don't think it likes the cold

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Thanks CC - maybe I will just tuck it in a corner.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL CC, your cold and Carol's cold are 2 different colds! Hey, I just heard lake effect on TV and thought of you, CC! Carol, do you ever, ever get a frost?

I left my 2 HGs and my EP out last winter. It was die if you must time. And they all made it. I was so shocked. Now they did get weird bark, but all grew great in spring.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

'coldest' we have seen in 4+ years is56....once. More often 58-60 in the winter when the storms dump snow on Moana Kea and the N. wind blows .... burr. :>)

Myrtle Beach, SC

Another "newby's" comments on HG. I have 2 of these rascals. One has grown to over 5', Y'd at 4' and had 2 buds. One bud dropped at 1" the other dropped off at 4". (I slit the bud and the bloom was in perfect shape.) I felt badly for a couple days. I knew going in that they were not the easiest to get to bloom, so when I saw 2, I was sooo happy.
The other HG has is still only about 2ft tall. It hates full sun and sheds leaves all the time. Most of the time she has 3-4 leaves as a crown and that's all. My DH felt so badly for her he made her a "hat" that she wore all through the heat of july and August, was too funny.
Both are doing okay now, but I'm not sure I want to deal with them both again next year. Maybe I'll just keep the bigger one ?
God bless, Margo

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Kell
yeah
Lake Effect hit major today
Got about 1 1/2 feet

and gee
i guess her cold is alot different than mine....LOL
