Chapin, SC(Zone 7b)

Julie and Crystal,

Yes to all of your questions.

Moretz, when I germinated the royal poincianas which are larger and harder I soaked them overnight before planting in seed starting medium about 3/4" deep. That's all I know. You can probably find more info. online. If you do, would you please share it here?

Merry Christmas to all,

Leslie

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

May I have some please?

Blessings,

Here is some information on starting the seeds.

Dwarf Scarlet-Yellow
Poinciana
Poinciana pulcherrima or
Caesalpinia pulcherrima

These seeds can be slow to sprout. Two techniques. 1. Use light sandpaper to scar the outer shell of the seed, then soak in water for 3-4 hours before planting. 2. Soak seeds for 12-24 hours before planting, no sandpaper needed. You might try a few seeds with both techniques to diversify your chances.

If you have a prepared outdoor space where your Poinciana will sprout and grow, you can direct seed into your soil. Plant at depth of seed, so your seed will go under about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch. Water to wet top 1/2 inch of soil. Keep moist daily if there is no rain. Your Poinciana is happy with a loose sandy soil with good drainage. In the future when your tree starts to bloom, it will greatly benefit from a late dry winter and a dry spring. The dry conditions very much encourage blooming. The point is, do not plant your seeds in wet areas or areas that tend to puddle with rain or irrigation.

You can start your Dwarf Scarlet-Yellow Poinciana seeds in containers. You can use Styrofoam 12-ounce to 24-ounce coffee cups or standard 6x6 inch plastic pots. You want to use a starter pot that has good depth to accommodate downward root growth.

If you use Styrofoam cups, use a pencil to make about 8-10 holes in the bottom of each cup. Fill with high grade nursery soil mix that DOES NOT CONTAIN fertilizer. Choose an expensive soil at your garden center; a bag that is very light for its size. Contents should include peat moss and assorted other organic ingredients such as charcoal bits, perlite, seed hulls, etc.

Wet soil several times to get a little water penetration. Place one seed on top of soil. Cover your seed with about 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch of dry soil. Re-water to moisten newly added soil. Place cups in a warm spot indoors or outdoors. The warmer the better for faster germination. Water as needed lightly to keep (top of soil) moist.

Your Dwarf Scarlet-Yellow Poinciana seeds will sprout likely in about 4-8 weeks, although that time can vary. Expect a cute green shoot and rapid initial growth. After germination, place container in full sun or partial shade immediately the same day. Do not wait.

If you plant to transplant your container sprouted seeds into soil or larger pots, wait until each starter container has developed a good root mass. Likely 4-8 weeks after green growth appears is the term, but you can look whenever you think they are ready to be transplanted. To look, lightly squeeze the starter container (to loosen the soil). Now place your hand over the soil allowing the plant to come between two fingers or your thumb and a finger then turn the container upside down. Slide your container off the soil.

If you see a good quantity of white roots and/or an aggressively growing tap root, you are ready to transplant to another location. If not, slide the soil back into the same container and wait another week or two then repeat your look.

Expect rapid growth all spring, summer and into fall. Fertilization with time released pellets such as Osmocote or Dynamite (Nutricote) will help health and growth. You can water generously this spring, summer and fall as this is the normal wet season for your tree and it will enjoy frequent rain or irrigation with good clean water. Nevertheless, make sure you have good drainage as “wet” soil is not the goal.

Your Dwarf Scarlet-Yellow Poinciana is deciduous so it naturally loses all or almost all of its leaves in winter, typically in South Florida for about 1-2 months. Keep soil dryer during that season, then in spring, when new growth appears again, start using a little more water and start feeding again. Once your tree is about 3 years old, it will begin blooming. Every year it ages it will bloom more.

Enjoy your very exclusive Dwarf Poinciana !!!

Some more info.

Brilliant scarlet and yellow flowers, feathery foliage, and quick growth make Dwarf Poinciana a popular evergreen shrub. It is hard to find a more attractive flower. Also known as Barbados Flower-Fence, this open-branched, fine-textured shrub will tolerate hot, dry areas, and forms an effective thorny barrier. It flowers year-round with peak displays in spring and fall.

Use and Management
Full sun is preferred for best flowering but some shade is tolerated. Any soil is suitable as long as it is well-drained. Dwarf Poinciana is perfectly suited to informal plantings. This is a beautiful, refreshing addition to any garden or yard as a specimen or as an accent toward the middle or back of a shrub border. Tipping the branches during the growing season creates a fuller shrub and more flowers. With some training and pruning, you can create a small, 12 to 15-foot-tall multistemmed tree, but the natural form is a low branched, full, widespreading shrub about 10 feet tall and wide. Allow plenty of room for this plant to develop as a shrub.
Propagation is by seed which germinate faster if scarified or soaked in hot water.

Pests
Scale will present an occasional problem.

Diseases
Dwarf Poinciana is susceptible to mushroom root rot, especially in poorly-drained soil.

Montreal, QC(Zone 4b)

If my SASBE doesn't get to you before Christmas, it might mean that it is lost. If so, would you be kind enough to spare some seeds for me? Then I will send a second SASBE to replace the lost one. Usually I do not get anxious before 3 weeks, but this time, I cannot control myself! LOL! Might be because it is the only exchange left to receive for Christmas.

Wish you all, happy holiday!

Zarcanat,

Your envelope came today and will go out Monday. I love the way you addressed and stamped it to yourself and then taped my address/stamps on a sheet of paper covering yours. Very clever idea I wanted to share with others here.
