propagation from flower stem????

Mandeville, LA(Zone 9a)

Can you do such a thing? Propagate a plant from a flower stem?

Which plant are you talking about?

Anthurium andraeanum

NematanthusNut, try this link: http://www.orchidmall.com/hormones/slide2.htm

I may be wrong but I don't think Anthurium flower stems have nodes so they can't develop any shoots from the flower stem. I think if you just have the flower stems Nematanthus, I don't think you can propagate from them. I'm always happy to be proved wrong of course.

I was wondering the same thing. I guess you could paste an exposed root node, stem with keikigrow or do proper tissue culture.

What is keikigrow

Hi tonyjr, take a look at this link: http://www.orchidmall.com/hormones/index.htm
I haven't tried it yet but am looking at trying it. It seems to be a paste of plant hormones that is applied to the leaf axis to promote growing plantlets using tissue culture chemicals. It seems they use it primarily in Orchids. I'm interested to see if it works on other plants aswell.

The andraeanum stems don't have nodes. It is just a smooth stalk with the "flower" atop. I thought about tissue culture and looked at the home culture kit. I'm not a professional...just a plant fanatic. I did successfully regenerate planariun worms for a high school science project one year :-0 so MAYBE I could attempt tissue culture. Since the flower is not a proper flower at all, rather spathe and spadix...isn't a spathe just a modified leaf? Any suggestions from those more knowledgeable than myself on how to put all of this together into some experiment???

I doubt there is anything you could use for tissue culture on the piece you have. Yes some leaves are used in micropropagation but they are usually from plants that can be propagated that way anyway, like Begonia.

Doesn't hurt to try though, as long as you don't expect it to grow.

I grow Echevieria from the flower stem. On the hybrids that is practically the only way. Norma

Baa I adore you, you really know your way around plants and people you are so wise. and I will trust anything you suggest. I wish I knew you when we were in England last year. Crasulady2 or Norma

Aww Thank You Norma!

That's the nicest thing anyone has said to me this year, thanks, you've really made my day :)
