? about maples

We have two good-sized maples in our yard. This is our first spring in this house, and I spent many hours pulling up maple seedlings and culling saplings out of the lilacs and the privet. I have already gone back and snipped off some sprouts from the saplings. If I paint brush killer onto the cut saplings, will it hurt the lilacs or the privet?
