Nice roots already .

Now I need some help with my planting mixture I want to make. What proportions should I use ? vermiculite?Perlite ? sand ?? compost ? actually I want to use all 4 if you guys think that is good ?

Should I plant the cutting regardless or should I leave well enough alone and wait to see if I get the see the buds open ?

Thanks,
Brigitte

What a cute little cutting. My own opinion would be to leave it in the water. That is what it is used to. However, it is very small to support heavy blooms. It probably would be best to remove the bud.....I know...that is hard to do. I do think that if you moved it to soil right now, it would take some time for the roots to adjust to taking up moisture from the soil and the buds might drop. It's six of one and half a dozen of the other. Myself, I would remove the buds, but this is your cutting and I don't have to choose. LOL!

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Shirley,
OH NO!! remove the buds, that would be a very hard decision to make :-(

Remember I am a newbie and only have seen one of mine bloom and I am so anxious to see what this does.
After I posted I had already decided to keep it in water, but didn't want to edit my post,
Brigitte

Well, that one just can't wait to get started. I've got one doing the same thing (L'Amour). I know it is recommended that you remove the bud so that the plant energy can go toward making roots, but I haven't been able to make myself do it either. The bloom (if it opens) won't be a robust one, but would be interesting. You'll have to anchor that cutting down to keep it from falling over if you let it develop. Let us know what you decide. Isn't it exciting??

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I hope it will go ahead and bloom for you. Maybe in a few weeks time, the shoot will be strong enough to support the bloom. I would remove one of the buds tho, just in case the shoot holding the bud does break off. I had a long branch from one of my brugs that I had saved for cuttings and it had a bud on it that bloomed after a while. I pollinated that bloom and got a seed pod that grew to about two inches and then it just stopped growing. The cutting was starting to root at that time, so I figured all the strength went into growing the roots and not the pod.

Brigitte,
Keep us posted with a pic of when it blooms. I didn't know they could get buds that early. How neat!

wow, brigitte - - - that's exciting!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Looking at all the pictures of all the cuttings in a couple of posts here I have a question.....

All the cuttings I have taken are much longer than all the ones I have seen here and in the Hydroponic set-up a few posts up. I left all te ends of the branches on. as I can see, most of the cuttings here are just stubby pieces of a branch.

Should I cut mine back, or in half, to make it easier to keep and maybe mail out next spring???????

Good to see you more perky, Shirley!

Everyone have a wonderul Thanksgiving!!!!!

Gita

I cannot help but copy/paste this for you all! Got it in an e-mail. it is a hoot!

BAKED STUFFED TURKEY

10-12 lb. Turkey [Butterball is good]

1 cup melted butter

4 cups stuffing (Pepperidge Farm is good.)

1 cup uncooked popcorn

(ORVILLE REDENBACHERS LOW FAT) Salt/pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush turkey well with melted butter, salt, and pepper. Fill cavity with stuffing and popcorn.

Place in baking pan with the neck end toward the back of the oven. Listen for the popping sounds.

When the turkey's ass blows the oven door open and the turkey flies across the room, it's done!

And you thought I couldn't cook..............:o)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That would sure add excitement to the day Gita. LOL

Brigitte, that is such a rambunctious cutting. It wants to be a tree already! LOL. It almost looks like it is labeled Golden Boy. GOOD LUCK. I can't wait to see an open bloom on it. You have a great camera also. Which kind?

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

That *is* exciting!
Maybe the shoot will support the bloom if it continues to 'lean on' that glass?!

(I wouldn't have the heart to remove it, either!)

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

hi everyone,
LindaSC I thought /read that L'Amour is difficult to root and you have also buds.Did you take pictures ? No I don't have the heart to take off the buds...plus I am nosy to see if it will open.

Shirley, thanks for the good wishes,I sure hope it will open ,will support it when the time comes.

Crystal,I am new too as you know and You should have seen my face this morning...total disbelief.Priceless !

Annapet,I am so exited already and especially that I can share next year ,lets just hope everything will be growing the way I wish for, then I can give cuttings :-)
too.

Kell,I will keep taking pictures.I have a Olympus camedia, had it for 2-3 years.Happy with the outcome of the pics too.

Nan, I just can't bear the thought of taking the buds off.Just a few weeks ago I broke off a bud from my first brug that ever bloomed and I was not happy at all that day,
Brigitte

Hi Brigitte, LOL I am happy your having success with Golden Lady, how about those fuzzy leaves! I would let the buds keep growing, won't hurt nothing, if you get a bloom it will be the smallest flowering brug I've ever seen, still LOL. I wish I could have seen your face this morning! That cutting was from a cutting that I got from Donna (SoCal) and grew up this summer. Donna has a tree in her front yard that had sooo many blooms that a big branch broke off and she was kind enough to send me two cuttings in March, only one made it and you have a cutting of that one. Just a little history of that Golden Lady, Here is a picture of the plant this summer

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Gita,
I don't know if the stubbier ones root easier or not ? since I am basically just starting out I am definately not qualified, but hopefully somebody else will jum pin and give you your answer. All I know the bigger shorter ones SEEM to be doing better for me .Dan's cutting is 7 inches long.

Dan,this WAS a surprise I would love to wake up with /for every day.NOW I am even MORE exited because your picture is so beautiful to show this brug off.YES you are right it might be just the smallest brug blooming ....for me anyway.I'll make history after all LOL.I wonder if SoCal will see this thread ?

Linda ,I am sorry you lost your bud..that's so disappointing,
Brigitte

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I'll just look forward to seeing it next summer.

Brigitte, What a cuttie your cutting of GL is. How lucky for you to get this to happen for you. I just had GL in my garden this year and Love her. Enjoy.

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Kin,
Yes I am pretty exited about this little adventure, the matter of fact I dreamed about it beeing a lavender/purple one with long tendrils....LOL...dreams !! wouldn't that be a beauty though if they came in purple like the Datura's,
Brigitte

LOL !!
Yes a Purple Brug would be nice and then who ever grew the first purple one could retire...
:-)
I'm looking forward to next year with the GL. It seems to be a very good bloomer and seeing what your cutting is doing it proves it too be. I don't know if you saw this on one of my posts. This was taken back in October some time. A little cutie from GL.

Hey Dan....

When I read that Brigitte received a cutting from you, I was wondering if it was from the one I sent you. Wow, isn't it fun to share with others and watch how far the plant can be extended to.

When that hugh limb fell off, I sent out over 20 boxes of cuttings of her. Then if they share cuttings, ....that's a lot of GL's floating around the States.

Brigitte, don't worry too much about the poor bloom. This gal is a prolific bloomer and she should grow up to give you plenty of beautiful blooms.

Donna

Corte Madera, CA

Donna, I was reading along and glad you found this thread, too!

Brigitte, one of my GL's is from Donna as well. How cool is that? =)))

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi Donna,
it's funny how cuttings will be distributed thruout the country :-)...I know I will do my share next year.Happy to hear that she is a prolific bloomer, that is definately a plus !!

Annapet,Yes that IS cool ;-))
did you plant yours yet and WHAT pottingmixture did you use ?

I ask that right in the beginning of my posts but nobody said anything about it...guess they were "BLOWN away " LOL LOL with my 2 buds hahaha,
Brigitte

Corte Madera, CA

donna's plants are super. from the little gift package she sent me, i have already shared with my mom and my godmother (canna tropicanna). imagine, from southern california, to bay area, then back to southern cali (san diego and san jacinto).

i use supersoil, it drains fast. i was just so afraid of root rot since i killed my first cuttings that way. can't wait to put it on the ground.

EDITED TO SAY:
i wouldn't know how to make a good mix of soil, so i buy supersoil. i'm sure brug experts have their own recipe mixes.

Annapet,

I have bought perlite,Vermiculite plus I have sand and compost left Valentina suggested in planting the seeds.Seeds are sprouting and also doing good :-) how about yours ?
Brigitte

Corte Madera, CA

Seeds are sprouting! A very exciting time! Wow, you are so advanced =). I haven't done anything new. Still starting seeds on rockwool.

Toledo, OH(Zone 5b)

Hi Donna, Yep that cutting came from me, I guess that kinda makes it full circle, and yes, I do feel good about sharing, I sent about 30-40 cuttings in about 15 boxes throughout the country. That should make the brug gods happy and they should shine on me this summer! I went looking for the thread that I originally made contact with you, that showed the big tree in full bloom, I am sure everyone would like to see that again espeacilly the newcomers.

I used what ever good quality potting soil that was on sale, these guys go through so much water and fertilizer in the summer that I don't think it makes much difference, as long as it drains well.
I used three or four different brands all with success.

When starting seeds a little different story, I used MG potting soil and Microwaved to sterilize it.

Forgot to say Unknown pale pink x Adora were grown from seeds from BrugAddict, I think this was her first time pollinating, these cutting are also all over the country. A beautiful brug!

Dan, That is one beautiful brug.

Donna, I can see the cutting you sent me! LOL
Momma too Many cuttings is gorgeous. I'm looking forward to next year with plenty of blooms.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

WOW Donna, that is quite a GL. Amazing. Too bad the limbs could not hold all those gorgeous blooms.

Diamond, are you going to name her or are you waiting till after you finish trialing her with all the people you sent her to? The flowers look bigger to me than Frosty's. Are they?

Toledo, OH(Zone 5b)

Hi Kell, I will let Julie (BrugAddiict) have the honor of naming the Brug, afterall it was her hard work pollinating and waiting for pods, but could you name the plant having a unknown parent? I will just enjoy the fruits of her labor and pass it along. I don't know about the size of Frosty's but will say that the flowers are large and very pink. Here's another pic.

Brigitte, Where are you? I bet your writing a book " The Adventures of the Golden Lady" or maybe dreaming of purple brugs! LOL. What do you think of the huge tree in Donna's front yard? Isn't that cool? mine only grew around 4' this year. But we both have a head start this year, we could grow our cuttings alot bigger. You must take pictures and share if you have a bloom. It would also look good on the cover of your book!

Kin, believe it or not I might have a few seeds left of this cross, if you want to try your hand at growing them, I have kept them in the fridge along. I think they are still good, you never know until you try to grow them.

Oops! look at the time I better get ready for work! gotta make money for more plants, my driving force!

Hi Annapet,
I took a couple of pictures for you this morning so You will see my seeds sprouting.ONLY a NEWBIE like me can be THAT exited ..LOL

I used a mixture of sand, perlite, vermiculite and compost. Can't recall the proportions right now but can look them up if someone is interested. It originally came from Valentina "recipe"

I soaked them all in warm water for 3 days keeping them in a Thermosbottle to keep the water temperature approximately the same. That was on the 5th Nov.and then planted all of the seeds I had on the 8th Nov.As You can see some a stubborn little devils and don't want to sprout. These were kindly given to me by one of our members :-)) THANK YOU !!

After planting I put the plastic shoeboxes which I used under a growlight, covered with Saranwrap. When I think about it I fill a Rubber Bedbottle with warm water and put under the box.
We'll see what happens,I will try to keep a close watch,
Brigitte

Looking good Brigitte. Maybe I should send my seeds to you for germinating. It looks like you will have lots of babies to grow next spring. Your yard full of roses and brugs will be wonderful to walk through and enjoy the fragrances of both in the evenings.

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)
