I had a large pecan tree about 2ft diameter. It was damaged by a hurricane so I had to have it cut down. Then I had the stump grinded below ground level. I assumed it was dead. Now I have noticed a sprout coming from the left over roots. Would it be safe to let this sprout grow? I'm worried it might have some kind of root rot in the future. I have noticed some mushrooms coming up in the vacinity of it.

My guess is that it would not amount to much even if you let it go. It would most likely be an inferior tree. However ask Starhillforest.....

As long as the tree was not grafted, the sprout is a genetic duplicate of the tree you had removed. Sprouts arising from above ground portions of a tree (e.g from old stumpage) should generally be avoided - the old stump rots & weakens the foundation of the sprout as it grows larger. Those sprouts arising from roots should show the same vigor as the parent tree and develop additional sound rootage and good buttressing.
