Newbie needs rooting help...

I'm pretty familiar with the garden variety thrip. I've had major rose damage from them. The method I use is to shake the flower/leaves over paper and you can generally see them if you look close. I did this with all the violets and saw nothing, even with my powerful loupe. But that doesn't mean they're not there. And I'm not taking a chance.

Good thing they weren't with the rest. So lesson learned, but luckily not the hard way like Betsy with her cyclamen mites the other day.

So every one has had their flowers and buds removed, and given a submerged dunk in a very warm bath with neem, I'm getting ready to systemic them with some thrip drugs and then give them a rest.

going to then bathe the pottery in bleach solution. I'll post the photos soon
(p.s. tossed all the flowers and wrappers they came in into the fire place which was still going from this morning!)

It's a good thing that I only bought these for my 'experiment' -$12.00 isn't much to lose if they dont make it.

In retrospect, I can see why I lost EVERY other violet I have had. And believe me, it numbers in the mid 50's to 80's over the last 15 years.

Used to get them for free when I worked at a nursery. As soon as the blooms were spend, they would toss them in the trash. I could be found dumpster diving on most days after work! (grin)

Good job Lali. Becareful Thrips can jump. Wash good after working with them and dunk them three more time every other week. Isolate 4 months. Your girl leaves are the same my Vintage Orchid Girl has.
I'd love leaves of yours please. Take good care of her.

I should wait to put down any leaves just yet right? I dont want to treat indiv. leaves + the moms.

Bummer, these were my 'Guinea pigs' too.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

You can treat the leaves and put them down :)) Any leaf coming in your home or plant may have bugs, insects... Treat them and put down and isolate them. Thrips eat flowers so if treated and no flowers they are going to starve . Only bad thing Pray not Thrips can carry bad viruses. But there's no reason why you can't put the leaves down. If you ever transplant any of your plants don't re-use soil dump out-side if bad get rid of it. Don't ever re-use pots only if they have been over night soaked in bleach so strong you can't put your hands in. DID you see I grow White Madonna she's girl leaf vintage 1953. I have one for MSC
you can have one too :))

I can send you leaves now, or put them down for you. Perhaps wait until after the holidays, things are moving a tad slow at the p.o. But come jan, I can mail them out. I can put them down, but not all that successful like you are.

p.s. that file is too large to send. I'll mail you privately...

ok Thanks, yes not good to ship now. Allison
