We're having such wonderful weather right now that yesterday I decided to finish organizing my greenhouse and getting all settled for the cold snap that I know is coming. (it's about 75º).
So I make my favorite smoothie - Frozen mixed berries, frozen mango chunks and yogurt with a splash of lemonaid and head off to the greenhouse to play!
I wasn't in there five minuted when I look over and 'Stealth Basset' has my smoothie in her chops and has gulped most of the frozen concoction down! so much for Begonia gardening buddies!
That's stealth gal on the right. The skinny one is just along for the ride and looking for any scraps Amber might leave her!
Begonia Gardening Buddies
And so that we stay on topic with begonias, here's a shot of b. richmondensis. that's the whole reason I had my camera with me in the greenhouse while this little excapade was going on. To photograph and make a thread of 'Who's blooming in the Greenhouse'
This is the one I keep under the pergola. She gets morning sun only and started out in June as a 2" pot! Everyone should grow this good ol' standby!
(I think she's in a 12 or 14 inch pot)
too cute! Here's Miss Ellie Mae Waddlebottom posing for me... ahem.. she's not much taller when she stands up.
Luna is a cutie too!
Hey, Nobody says we have to stay on the begonia topic do we LOL. I absolutely love those cute cuddly dogs.
And that smoothie sounds scrumptious, Mangos are high dollar here, I've not seen them frozen, but yum, makes me want to go spend the bucks and get me a smoothie,
kathy
We have Trader Joes! big bag of frozen mangos are like $2. in the summer I eat them right out of the bag as a nonfat treat (sub for icecream)
my kids like them too!
So sure, let's post our begonia gardening buddies (four legs or two, no matter) I'd love to see everyone's begonia gardening buddies here!
Here's Thing One and Thing Two (yea, as in the Cat in the Hat trouble makers!)
Flopsy is a cutie pie, what kid of dog is she (he?).
Lucky looks like Thing Two's mom RosieBud. But Lucky's colors are alot like Things. All three T1, T2 and Rosie are Manxies. We have several 'barn' cats that are, Cubby, Boneless, and Jenna but the others have tails, Jackson, Jessie, Magdalena (aka Maggie) and Shitay.
None are 'indoor' kitties, but they all visit inside.
All but one of our dogs (not shown, Seminole) are rescues. All have 'behavioral' issues, i.e. the smoothie. Yesterday Amber, in her quest to chew on anything that remotely looks like kleenex knocked over my bedside table and broke a 1930's McCoy bulb bowl. A pristine bowl that I keep my reading glasses and things in. She's about 85 pounds but thinks she is a tea cup poodle. She has no idea that she a larger gal. It's a regular riot in the morning when the hear me get up. No on gives me a minutes peace after my coffee is made. And beleive me, the know the tinking of the spoon on the side of my cup means 'cookies' aren't far behind.
I belong to a basset forum too and they are named the 'Laugh-A-Minute Hounds'.
Here are their dogster pages in the even that anyone is bored enough to read them....

Lali, Flopsy is a Jack Russell, Springer Spaniel mix that landed on the doorstep with her brother 10 years ago. My husband found the owners (a local "puppy mill") and paid them to keep her because he fell in love with her. He gave her brother (Jack) to a teenager who was helping out at the nursery at the time. I'm so glad he kept her because she's so much cuter than her brother. She has all the traits of a Springer, but the smaller size of the Jacks - kind of like having a Springer puppy that never grew! She's overweight but that doesn't seem to slow her down much. She's a real trooper and is ready and waiting each morning to jump in the car so she can spend her day at the nursery with us :)
Lucky was named by my mother-in-law who found him when he was just an itty-bitty kitten. She was walking her dogs after a tremendous rainstorm and this little kitten ran over to her just absolutely drenched and begged to be picked up. She ended up flagging down a policeman who was driving by to hold the dogs while she scooped up Lucky and put him in her pocket to take home. He had run across a very busy highway to get to her, thus the name 'Lucky'. She asked us to come over and see him with the intention that we MIGHT adopt him. My husband has never been a cat lover so I thought it was useless, but he fell in love with this little kitten immediately, took him into another room to "give him a talking to" (let him know who was boss) and then announced that we could take him home - He's been hooked ever since and you should see him with this cat! :)
LOL "a minutes peace" - Every morning I get my cereal for breakfast, I have to be quiet so Lucky doesn't hear the spoon on the bowl - I swear he can hear it all the way from outside! Then he fights me for his "cereal milk" until I'm finally done and he can enjoy his treat. Some days he is so persistent that I end up finishing my cereal standing up in the middle of the kitchen with him whining around my ankles :)

Oh I love all these pictures. I really want a dog. I have never had one. I was thinking I needed a little yap dog, but I have got to say I just love the looks of Miss Ellie Mae Waddlebottom. She kind of looks like me. LOL
Here is my dog, Gabby. She follows me everywhere, sleeps on me at night. She is my baby. Here she is looking at my new begonia.
LOL Love this thread. BC, your gardening helpers (and their names) had me laughing so much my business partner had to come see, too!
Kell, you're not gonna believe this, but your dog strongly resembles my cats. ROTFLOL
Sharon
Joolz how many kitties do you have? That one is a 'real helper'! (soil tester?)
Oh I love you dogs and cats. Orange Boy is great !
I had an Orange boy about 45 pounds :))
I need to get on the ball and make my res. with the hotel, Joolz. I have some other things I want to do while there, and havn't figured out my whole schedule yet. So i'll get on it hopefully by tomorrow. flight tickets are pretty reasonable now. $260 from sfo. (they were $205 last week, but you had to travel last week)
Don't forget to call Julie Avila to make the hotel reservations. They'll tell you there is nothing left if you call the hotel directly. I'm looking forward to meeting you!!!

Oh, goodness....love those pet pics! 'Crazii,' those soulfull bassett eyes just yank at me--I've got their cousin, Lucy the Beagle. The eyes.....=)
And Jools, Orange Boy? I'd hang happily with that guy too. I love any animal that wants to be with you AND the messy hobbies! lol I truly like his rear wide berth too.......chubby cats are the best. Mine's just too active......Lilliput runs it off. Um, and brings me those yucky presents. =(
Oooh, and hey--are you guys talking about going to the Begonia Convention in Florida? They reminded me over at Kartuz' place that he'll be there. Lucky ducks. =)
I'm going! Got my ticket yesterday! Those bassets are lucky they have such soulful sweet eyes, it saves them everytime they destroy something! They just look at me with them and I melt, I'm sure it's a trick to keep them out of the 'dawg house'!
What a handsome kitty! Meow!
mkjones, Lilliput is a sweetie, especially love the little "goatee" :) I love it when Lucky joins me while I'm gardening, although there are times that he thinks my stooped position is the perfect time to jump on my back for a little 'horseplay'!
Lali, been following all the discussions regarding the convention and I am SO envious - we can't make it this year :( That time of the year is just too busy for us getting ready for spring - do you know if it's always held in March? My begonias are hanging in there, but they really look sad this time of year. Kevin from Firmly Planted emailed me to let me know B. luxurians is ready but I'm holding off ordering right now until the weather is warmer, when it won't be subjected to join the others in the house waiting for a breath of fresh air.
That's a good question, Actually Joolz can probably answer it better than I can. It's so hard to wait on begonias, I've been very disciplined not buying any, knowing that the selection in Florida will far surpass any eBay offerings. So I have to duct tape my hands as the auctions close for restraint! LOL.
I'm just trying to figure how I'm going to get all the goodies home!
What a fun trip!! You will see so many great ones. I can't wait to see all your pictures Lali! Too bad you will have trouble getting your plants back, I would give you $$$ to get a few odd ducks for me. How ocme there areno plant conventions in SanFrancisco. I wold love to go to a few. An Aroid one would catch my fancy also.
Orange boy looks like a king with a wide butt. LOL. What a guy!
Lilliput does look like the cat who swallowed the canary! LOL
Well, Orange Boy's butt isn't quite as big as it looks. He has a lot of fur. :-}
The begonia convetions are held at different times of the year depending on which branches are putting it on and what is the best time for their begonias. 2006 Miami in March, 2005 Dallas in May, 2004 San Diego in August, 2003 April in Oklahoma. Here's a shot of a winning B. roxburghii taken at the 2003 convention.
And there are many, many ways to get your plants home. Some people take an extra suitcase to fill with plants. I asked Tim Anderson, the man in charge, to see about arranging UPS shipments for us. We'll see what happens, but I've done that myself at other conventions. I actually shipped my clothes home since it takes longer and put the begonias in my suitcase.
There will be lots of people to give you packing tips too. Some people take them out of the pots, put them in baggies and wrap with newspaper. Some just wrap the pots up in newspaper. You can get a lot more begonias in your suitcase without the pots. I suggest bringing scissors, tape, baggies of some sort (I use the ones the newspaper comes in to enclose the whole plant). You can save the newspapers each day at the convention, assuming they leave us one, so you'll have plenty for packing.
Oh, and the last day if there are plants left, they often have a half-price sale. That's where I get in trouble. But I've always found that no matter how tight I pack them and how much my bags may be thrown around, the lovely begonias always arrive home in good condition!
How can I tell if any will be in San Francisco? What a beauty of a begonia. I love it.
Do you like bird cages also?
Kell - you just missed one!
There are also mid-year mini-conventions where board meetings are held. There was one in September 2005 in San Francisco. All ABS members are welcome. There are tours (Strybing) & garden visits. Here is a picture of one of the gardens we visited.
If you join the ABS, you'll get The Begonian every other month which has lots of wonderful articles and pictures and growing tips. And it will tell you of upcoming events. You can also order seeds from the seed fund.
I sound like I'm in marketing, but I actually just really enjoy the whole begonia experience.
Jooolz
Jooolz, thanks for the info regarding the conventions. Looks like I'll have to sit back and wait for everyone's reports and photos from the conventions since it appears they are all scheduled during our busiest time of the year :( Hopefully when we retire we'll be able to join in on all the fun!
Excellent idea for getting your Begonias home - take an extra suitcase or ship your clothes home! When we were visiting Phoenix several years ago, we couldn't resist picking up some great plants and had no idea how to get them home. A relative let us borrow a suitcase and we carefully packed them for the flight home - with very careful packing (wrapped in lots of newspaper), they survived beautifully!
Begoniacrazy, where in N. Calif. are you located ? I am in Livermore.
patricia
I'm in the way north end of the Napa Valley, Calistoga! (like the water!)
Are you all having this dreary weather too?
I know where Calistoga is, been there many times. Yes we are having dreary weather also.
Jerodsmom, Did you forget you sent me a box of noid Hoya a few months back? Most are doing great. Lost a few. No blooms yet.
One of my DH 70's is plumped up ready to bloom but not just yet, a few more days.
Begoniacrazii: I loved the names. When I was growing up we had a cat named 'Thomas J. Wellington Pussycat Boots.' Says much more about him than just Thomas, don't you think? Waddlebottom? What a hoot!
