A Small Bloom on Common JMG

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

I don't have a sophisticated camera to send the good closeups, but once in awhile I take a shot that comes out pretty fair. Like this picture of a JMG that had blooms of 2 1/4". In talking to Ron about variety, he said it was similar to Star of India or Robe types, just not as large in bloom. Got the seed for this from a gardener in Japan and kept it in storage for about 3 years before planting. Got real good germination, but have been fighting the worms getting into the seed pods and destroying seeds. Hope I end up with enough seeds to carry on the "fight".

Don't know if the eggs are being laid within the bloom or drilled in after the seed pod forms. Has anyone had experience with these seed eaters and will spraying the pods help head 'em off?

Very nice! I don't have any issues with worms getting into the pods here in Wisconsin, so I'm afraid I can't answer your question about that. Just wanted to welcome you again to DG and the MG forum and tell you how much I like that bloom!

Got those stupid worms here in Jacksonville too.
Killed 4 of the monsters today
INSIDE my seed pods.
They were so plump and healthy

Beautiful bloom, txwillie!

I'm so glad I don't have these evil 'seedworms' here... (japanese beetles do the job for them:( They completely shredded my JMG 'sayaka' plant ) Anyway, warm welcome to the DG Morning glory forum!

Such a nicely defined star! A star of a flower!

Thanks for the response to my question on controlling worms getting into seedpods. Surprised to hear that some parts of the country have no problem with this. Guess your area raises more kinds of plants to feed the on'ry critters than we do out here in dry, arid West Texas. Seems like the fat pods on the JMG's have a special attraction! Heck I had 'em in containers in four different areas and every one got hit.

Guess I will have to try the distilled liquid soap or some long lasting bug killer.....................or maybe the secret is to plant so many seeds that the bugs give out 'fore they can get around to every pod (I think that's Emma's secret defense). We don't seem to be bothered too much with Japanese Beetles, but I keep 4 O'Clocks growing just in case they come on a visit and hope that will discourage and send 'em on to the next yard..

4 O'Clocks? Is this a beetle repellant?

Zem, that's a tongue -in-cheek remark and not a certified entomological fact (even tho I did take Entomology 101 and learned to say Coleoptera, Hemiptera and fancy things like that). Seems like I read one time that Japanese Beetles did not mess with 4 O'Clocks. Course it makes sense to me that the Japanese Beetle being from Japan and the JMG being from Japan, I figure that like a way-farin' Texan on a visit to New York City--------They gets hungry for a "home cooked meal". On the other hand it looks like the JMG would have developed a genetic resistance to the greedy beast (bug)

Janet, it's not a question of having enough MG's, but one of having enough room to plant 'em and the time and energy to give 'em the TLC they need. Wouldn't it be nice to be rich enough to have a full-time gardener to do the dirty work and give a person more time to enjoy the blooms? Course I guess with that kind of wealth one would have greenhouses and orchids.

I would love to have a gardener but only to do the boring work. the planting I would do my self, love that part to much :0
About space, currently rent a house with big garden so for me that isn't the problem, its the winter and cold and the snow that I gladly would love to get rid of, Longing for next summer.
I currently have planted 20 MG:s to have as indoor plants this winter, keeping my fingers crossed that some of them at least will have flowers for me to enjoy.
I only planted one of each of the various mg I got from some people here. So I have some for the next summer.

Hi Txwillie(!),
Glad to see you over here...Neem oil spray may work as a repellant for the 'worms'...most likely larvae of some Lepidoptera or weevil...
I'll be catchin' up with ya'...
TTY,
Ron
