This Morning Glory doesn't produce Seeds! Now what????????

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

I have a MG that is very large and solid white. It is not fragrant but it is a beautiful plant with large leaves. It does not produce seeds. I have checked it over and over and no seeds. What can I do to insure I have this plant again next year? It is not a Moon Vine.
I would like to add that the blooms will open in the morning and stay open nearly all day even in shade. It is a beautiful plant!

Lin,
This is unusual... some morning glories (most) can be propagated from cuttings. I believe the varriety cou have is Ipomoea tricolor 'pearly gates' and should produce plenty of seed. However, if you don't find a way to keep it going, I have pearly gates seeds that I could send you some of.

I agree with Zem on the ID...annuals ending their life cycle is related to a feedback mechanism from the matured flowering parts to the roots...so,if you take a cutting and root it,you may be able to overwinter your plant...clip off any flowerbuds that form until the mid springtime to insure that the plant doesn't complete an early life cycle...
The plant you have may be self-infertile or it may be that some of the Ipomoea tricolor strains grown in the warmer zones may have become somewhat 'accustomed' to the longer growing seasons..,
Is it possible that there may be young seedpods forming that may not look ripened yet,and that you may have somehow overlooked(?)...

Lin,
I too am in Texas and for some reason my 'Pearly Gates' JUST started blooming a couple of weeks ago. Gave it up for dead as I planted the seeds about 6-months ago, and just now getting blooms? ? ? ? Very Strange! Also, mine stay open all day and into the night, however, I contribute that to the cooler weather.

Here is a 'Pearly Gates' bloom from yesterday.

Yesterday this plant had 30 (yes 30) blooms on it. It was beautiful!
I still have seen no seeds. Maybe it will have seeds a little later on. I'll keep checking it everyday.

Zem and Ron I will try to take cuttings and root them so maybe I can have this plant for next spring. I have a good place that I overwinter my tender plants. I am rooting some more cuttings right now from other vines that I want to have for next spring.

Zem thanks for the offer of the seeds. If I don't have any luck with mine I'll be happy to have some seeds.

Emma your "Pearly Gates" is beautiful!! My plant has been blooming since Sept. but has just now started having lots and lots of blooms. I'm sure the cooler weather has helped it.

Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions!

I have the same problem. They'll bloom all summer, but never set any seed. Then as fall cools everything down, they bloom like crazy and start setting seed, but I lost LOTS last year to the first frost, then this year what I had of 'Wedding Bells'. I'm thinking that since the coolness seems to promote the seed growth that I may plant them this spring where they'll either get morning or afternoon shade, and see if that helps. In the wild, it grows in tropical areas where it will get some shade, so maybe this is the 'big secret'.

How early are we sowing the seeds indoors?

For us down here, we could probably sow now and be safe, but I would recommend 4-6 weeks before your last frost. We've had an extremely dry, warm winter.
