CLERODENDRUM PHILIPPINUM

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Finally my clero has started to open up. I think DonnaB gave this to me at the swap. I luv the double flowers and the light vanilla smell. It reminds me of small roses. My camera is not doing justice to it but you at least get to see my bloom.

donna, this is one of my favorite plants of all time. i had it in the keys for a very long time. i too love the little "nosegays". debi

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Thanks, Debi. "Nosegays" is an appropriate description for the blooms.

That's lovely, Donna:-)

Thanks, Clare. My digital sure doesn't do justice to it.

Beautiful, I have never seen that one!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Thanks, Weeds. I thought that was a common one down in your end of town.

Donna, I grew this one for the first time this summer and was so surprised to get blooms on it right away. I just love it, and am keeping my fingers crossed that I don't lose it over winter.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

it's funny you say that about being common, donna. in all the nurseries in so.florida and keys that i visited (and you know that was alot LOL) there was only one nursery that carried it and they had alot of them all the time. i never saw it in any other garden tho. debi

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I like it too! I have noticed that I am noticing Clerodendrum much more. Always a bad sign.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Both my Phillipinum and Bungii bloomed this year, and even though the Bungii put's out runners, I absolutely love the flowers. I am leaving both in the ground this winter to see if they will make it. I guess I better take some cuttings just in case though. I also just bought another variety, but for the life of me, I can't remember which one it was at the moment.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

WARNING: the bungeii is very invasive. Keep it in a pot in the ground and no, you can't kill it.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Debi, wow I can't believe you only saw it in only one nursery. Patricia did you smell the flowers. Isn't the smell delicate. Now Kell, I really can't believe you don't have it. That's terrible....lol.

i was on a Clero mission years ago, determined to have every species. the year i finally made my goal we had a small "surprise" hurricane, no time to prepare like usual. we had over a foot of saltwater thru the house, yard and gardens and a tornado spun off for good measure and took down a few trees. i lost a lot of plants because i couldn't get to them in time, too many things to do. a couple of them came back from the roots the following year, but this one didn't. it was my sister's all-time favorite of my garden.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

That's awful, Debi. I hope I can keep it alive inside until I can bring it outside again.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

donna, just keep it warm and don't pour any saltwater on it! LOL

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Okie, dokie....lol.

Donna........just where did Donna B pick up this beauty???? does she have seeds?? E

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

I'm not sure where DonnaB got it from, Roselaine. This is my first winter with it so I hope survives. If it does I can try and root cuttings.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OOOOO yes...heheheheh....seeds?

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Heaven, we didn't have winter in the keys. i would venture to say that it wouldn't survive beyond 9b. we would have a cold day or two during the winter and mine survived that ok but certainly never a frost! good luck with it. debi

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Very pretty, Donna. I have a very itty bitty one that I just purchased.

Patricia, I live in zone 7 and i left my Bungi out all winter and it came back. You shouldn't have any problem in your zone.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Thanks, ahelms!

Don't you just love it Donna??? I got them on e-bay for a dollar a piece lol. They multiply readily like most cleros. If you have it in a big enough pot it may divide for you over winter. ButterflybyRobyn just sent me another one in a surprise package she sent. If fact she sent me 4 different cleros I lost to Katrina and a buch of other goodies. I am so thrilled. I have been so sick over my plant losses. It was honestly more upsetting than losing the house. Insurance won't pay for the plants and I am no longer able to get out and do all the planting. I have to beg anyone I can find to plant for me. Sweet Larry(Ely) came over and planted a beautiful ginger bed for me right before the hurricane.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

ah....hah..........that's where you purchased them! got to get me one of those???????? Elaine

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Oh ok debi, I saw the zone 9a and figured you were in the northern part of Florida.

Mine is still small enough where I can bring it in for cold snaps. It should be a cool 37* here tonight. Burrr!

Are they pretty easy plants to grow from seed? How soon to bloom? Anyone know?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I haven't seen that one! I have really become enchanted with the clerodendrums diverstiy. I've started collecting them. My last one was a varigated clero. My butterfly clero is 8 feet tall, huge...and it survived snow last christmas eve. So... Ebay to further my clero collection...? I scan web sites for these guys, and there just really isn't that big of a selection so far. Thanks!

Temecula, CA(Zone 8b)

hiya PG,

that's a really beautiful flower. I've been wondering how difficult it is. Thanks so much, I'll be putting this on my spring list of cool plants to put in. Thanks for sharing.

best,
don

Rjudd TopTropicals.com has a nice selection of clero's. That's where I had orginally gotten most of mine. Always has wonderfully healthy plants and bigger than most other places sell via mail order.

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

i might be wrong, but i think bungei is more cold tolerant than phillipinum, that doesn't mean not to try tho. yes, i'm in 9a now, but i was previously in the keys.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I think trackinsand is right--I have my bungeii planted in my garden but keep phillipinum and most of my other clero's on my protected patio. I'm pretty sure phillipinum is only hardy to zone 10 but bungeii is OK to zone 8 or maybe 7

I also bought most of mine from Top Tropicals--they do have a great selection and always send very large healthy plants. If there's one you want that they don't carry, I've also gotten some smaller plants from Kartuz Greenhouses and Logee's.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

If I can get it to bloom....it can't be that hard to grow...lol. I'll let you know how it does over the winter in the basement. This is a very special plant for me because it came from DonnaB! Thanks again, DonnaB!!
Hugs, Donna

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Cool! thanks for the pointer to Top Tropicals, I'm on my way for a visit online now. My back garden is protected by a 9 foot fence, everything always seems to squeak by. Looks like I may be getting out the frost blankets this weekend though. I wonder if the other cleros blooms like the Butterfly Clerodendrum, Blue Glory Bower (Clerodendrum ugandense) Mine hasn't stopped blooming since last Feb.

Has anyone purchased Musical Note Plant, Morning Kiss (Clerodendrum incisum)? I think that's on my list next.
