Me, again...

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I have 2 of the Grandpa Ott's or Star of Yelta - still can't tell the difference and I planted both seeds in the same 2 areas. Anyway, on the one I planted at work I got lots of seeds, but on the one at home, they are forming the little pods, but they stay soft and green. What's up with that? Is there anything I can do to help them along?

I believe these two morning glories are the same actually. Companies often sell the same plant under a different name, which is such a pain for collectors.

In warm temps the pods should ripen on their own, but now with cooler weather setting in the pods will ripen more slowly.

I finally had to pull them off the plant since it's all shriveled up. Good thing I did, too! It got got down to 32 degrees last night, and we had some flurries this morning! YIPPEE! I love the snow! They are predicting a long, cold, wet season...I may change my mind by February!

I'm hoping they will still ripen, but at least I got alot of seeds from the plant at work.

I planted about 35 MG seeds this yer and ended up with only 4 plants, so I think I need alot of seeds! There's some kind of critter that loves to munch down on these when they are about 2-3" tall. Grrrr - next year I intend to have a dozen of these guys, so I'm going to plant at least 50!

Sand Springs, OK(Zone 7a)

I planted hundreds and got about 20 vines ,
think on my tiered yard they got washed down hill;
or did not germinate .
Jap seem harder to raise then old time ones .
Well I hope what seeds i did get '
will do better next year, will do pots .
Cant afford new seeds of Jap after '
retirement has hit in on us .

Hello Everybody,
The picture posted here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=1794010

is very 'typey' for what the Granpa Ott's should look like with the dark fuschia star and alot of fuschia in and around the throat...the 'Star of Yelta' has the same basic background color, but with a purple/violet star and a throat area that doesn't have the large amount of fuschia embellishment...like the photos here that are 'typey' for the "Star of Yelta"...

there has been alot of crossings of the different I.purpureas, which do readily cross, and the 'typiness' is being easily confused and 'lost' amongst the almost infinite degrees of coloration differences of the crosses... and natural mutations are what is usually often seen, but nevertheless still very much enjoyed(!)...

Hope that helps...

Ron
