2zeus your plants are beautiful. WOW the variegation in your plant is breath taking. ONe of the prettiest I've ever seen ! Did you grow it by leaf ? Where did you get it ? It's wonderful ! Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed your pictures ! Allison

Indeed the variegated one is quite a showy plant! What color is its flowers?

I can't recall any more where I got it - it has never bloomed for me, so I have no idea the flower colour - I keep it for the leaf -it's so pretty.
I'm happy to share, but don't know if this is the correct time of year to send leaves? Won't they freeze? Anybody know how to package them? Or should I wait until spring?
If I should wait until spring, you need to remind me to send you a leaf, as I am an airhead about these things!! Really.

It's ok to ship now in southern staes. Or if you use thick insulation and heat packs. If not best wait until Spring. I got two boxes fine yesterday with no insulation or heat packs even though they came from PA I live in Florida. I did ship out 6 large boxes Monday but I used thick insulation and 60 hour heat packs.
Your plant are so pretty great Streptocarpus plant ! Allison

Allison, I live in the (soggy) north - BC, Canada, so don't think I could ship to the US this time of year? Where do I get a heat pack? What is a heat pack?
My DH has figured out how to send me a reminder from his computer to mine in the spring, so anyone who wants a leaf of anything, send me a d-mail.

Hi Allison,

Welcome.

I'm so envious of your beautiful AVs. I never had any luck with them. I just kept killing them. Seeing yours has made decide to try again. I'm going to watch this discussion and try to learn as much as I can.

Thanks for sharing the beautiful pics. I also enjoyed the photos of your dogs. We have 3 dogs ourselves and they're just big babies.

I just did a search and bought 60 hour heat packs.( Heat packs with a big order cost me $ 2.00 each plus shipping I have some left from last year ) And my husband bought me a roll of the thick insulation at Home Depot.
I wanted to get boxes of trades and people contacted me to buy out sooner but then we had Hurricanes. So Monday all the boxes that I shipped went to Canada. I shipped them fast way 3-5 days praying they stay warm . I have a few more boxes I need to ship Monday. I don't like to ship around the Holidays as they really slow the packages down and make for frozen plants. It's realy better to wait for Spring . Allison

Thank you Suzanne. African violets are easy, fun to grow and share :)) I grow them to enjoy and share :)) Allison

Can plant material be shipped into the USA from Canada and be passed by USDA/Plant Protection and Quarantine inspectors?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

good question. With the correct papers and no dirt. Once a box of marked African Violet leaves no dirt/no soil. sent to my friend was opened and closed back up neatly and arrived to her fast stamped aproved in excellent condition. I use all sterile soil-less mix too no soil. Allison

(Zone 7b)

would I be able to send just rooted leaves, in a wet cloth?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I would think so. I bought on Ebay tis summer a trailing Chimera( I was bad) a streptocarpus plant, and Chirita all in soil-less mix in pots, and dozens of bags of leaves. The seller is from Canada. I forget exactly what was written on the box something like, Streptocarpus, leaves, Saintpaulia ( I cant spell sorry ) Well it was a hugh box and it arrive fine. Allison

That is good to know, Allison, thanks!

I always ship leaves in a closed ziploc (greenhousing them, essentially), and rooted leaves/plantlets in a tiny pot (like a medicine cup or applesauce container) w/mix and enclosed with a wet napkin atop, and saran wrapped all 'round the pot and stem.

AV's are really resilient, and unless they're very small plantlets that haven't acclimated outside of glass yet, they want to keep on trucking for us! lol
