Hi
I'm new to the forum and what I see so far I really like ! I grow Afriican violets by leaf for enjoyment my fun Hobbie. I also grow a few Streps and other Gessie's.
I enjoy trading ! I sure would like any help around the forum. Nice to meet you all. Allison
Hi I'm New
Nice to meet you too, Allison! You have a lovely name. AV's are such fun, aren't they? And, well.......er, addictive! I dabble w/the other gesneriads too, but only a few (streps don't seem to like me....except for 'Gator Tail').
It IS so darling to see a baby plant coming up f/a leaf, isn't it?? I never cease to squeal when I find one. =)

Hiya Allision,
Glad to have you join our group. Lovely pic you've posted. We all love "eye candy" so post as many AV pics as you like.
We can sure use someone to add to the info on Gessies, too.
I grow an assortment of Av's & I love Streps but they sure don't like me,so any helpful info will be willing & happily accepted here.
Most of us on the forum are hobby collectors of Av's but we grow a mixed bunch of Gessies, too.
Glad to have you here!

Patti
Welcome! You've got a lovely collection of blooms, there, and I love the way they look against the lace.
I'm looking forward to seeing your posts (and more pictures, pretty please) here and in other DG forums. I've had such a great time with DG since subscribing in January that I get all excited for anyone who just joined up.... I hope you'll have a blast with this gang too!
Hope you're having a lovely week... Happy November! :-)
Hi !
Thanks for all the wonderful welcomes :))
I love groaing Av's and mostly grow by leaf . Each new baby amazes me. I do have some Strep's I buy 10 4 live. lol But I still like them ! I grow them by leaf sometimes. I need not to water them until
they are bone dry. Over watering is so easy for Strep's and I think thats what I didn
Epscias I like a lot too. Now those grow like weeds. Seems like I grow them and give them away but have a coupld large ones in blooms. My favorite is Albosia Cygnet !
I also like groaing Chirita's and have a coupld and would like to get more ! They grow fast by leaf , maybe faster than AV's and bloom like Streps ! The best of both ! The foliage on some , the varigation is just outstanding.
Nice to meet you all I am looking forward to the group and forum and findng my way around !
Allison

Hi
I use little thr away camera's pictures take awahile :))
When I first started growing I bought a lot of two piece pots. I learned some by myself and some by local group they are not really great for growing. Sometimes now i do take the plastic pots and sit them into tw piece pots, tea pots, any cute little conatainers I can find ! I like displaying them around our home ! I enjoy growing in natural light though I do have stands with grow lights. I move my plants around like furniture and like thm every where to enjoy !
I don't have a lot of room in our little tiny home. But I am addicted to putting leaves down. I mostly grow by leaf. Each new baby is exciting for me !!
I mostly give them away, sponcor Bingos, sell a few, ship for postage to make room for my addicton. Health hs slowed me down and I only hav a couple hundred leaves down now. Last year at I always had around five hundred.. I like growing different varieties. I grew around one thousand different varieties for fun in the past year or so !
Talking about Av's is fun ! I love looking at all your pictures.
I do wick most of my leaves and plants. Streps I do not and some of my larger plants I don't wick. Everything is grown in plastcic pots.
I use pan pots for some of my Gessies, Streps, trailers. I like growing miniatures and those are gorwn in 2 " pots and some in thumb print. I like the short style pots Azela pots some call them. I use a lot of the 2 1/2 inch for Semi's and 3 and 4 for standards.
I just like them all ! Allison
PS I have been taking pictures of some flowers/palnts and have two throw aways cameras to get developed
Joseph Episcias are fun and easy to grow. Nice they grow lots of babies make them great for shring as starting new plants are east.
They are fun to grow in hanging baskets too !
I only have a few now as I'm always giving them away .
I have Grey Lady, Bkue Heaves, Teddy Bear, Chocolate Soldier,
Alice Aussie , and I still call Albosia Cynet one as it was registered as one in the 1960's. I have grown a lot of them but everyone always wants them. I give them to many friends and neighbors ,
as they are easy to grow. Allison
PS they like it humid and warm. They can not take the cold.
Allison your plants, your lovely way of displaying them, and that amazing epicia- all so wonderful! The still-life combinations you create give your home a lovely English/Victorian feel.
Before her decline in health, my mother grew epicia for many years, and I tried many cuttings and killed all of them. I used to grow several violets and streptocarpus, but could'nt keep the epicia alive. Mom always grew hers in a container with no drainage. I never did that and now wonder if I shoul have. Her plant has died now, but seeing that striking variety in your pic makes me want to try them again. What tips would you recommend. Neal.
I can't imagine a container with no drainage for a plant that's easy to kill by overwatering, but if it worked, then it worked! I have just one episcia that I'm keeping in a terrarium environment, so we'll see how I do with that. Neal, I didn't know you were an AV person, or I'd have put extras into the box I just packed for you & George! Well, I'm sure George will share when his leaves produce plantlets... heck, you're receiving the box, you can *make* him share, LOL!
Allison, your pictures are just wonderful!! Your plants look so healthy & vibrant -- and I cannot get over how many babies you've been starting from leaf! WOW!!! I have a long way to go as a propagator... :-)
I was getting ready to put a bunch of leaves down and set them on one of my seed starting shelves (under lights), but now I'm thinking I may try setting up my mini greenhouse (just like yours, :-) ) instead. You're an inspiration! Or maybe you're a warning as to how bad the leaf starting addiction can get.... Ha! No, no, you're definitely an inspiration. But I'm not going to let DH see this thread! :-D
What a greenhouse!!! Thanks for sharing. Great photos.
Nanna
I guess I'm a former AV person. Now that I live in this shadowy hollow, the light I get in the house is so limited all my house plants suffer in winter. So it's been several years since I grew them. But, I get to enjoy all the pics here!
I always thought that was so strange that Mom's epicia did so well (without drainage), and I could'nt get one to survive. When I was in high school I had lots of AVs, but when I went to college Mom overwatered all of them and I lost them. She later became good at growing them with leaves she saved from some of the dying ones.
You know I never thought about it but I had a Tri-color Episcias. It grew so big it was in a 12 inch hanging pot for almost two years. It had a drainage I could have opened but never did.
Now you can not killEpiscias :)) It died. It was heavy and hanging and while waiting for my husband to take it down in his busy days ( took for ever lol maybe 3-4 weeks) every once in a wahile I'd put a little water in it . Why ? I don't know everything was dead gone. Before I knew it there was the cutest tiny baby ! WOW ! I took it out of the pot while it was still small as the pot was so big. It was about 1 1/2 inches. That baby grew onces again in no time into a hugh plant and many extra's and I mean many to give away and share !
This was not the last time this happened to me. Don't ever throw them away :))
But I never did think about a pot with no drainage then I was thinking one of my most favorite plants Albosia Cygnet is in a 12 inch pot no dranige beautiful plant so full and always blooming. I have a Begonia which has been in a 12 " pot for a few years no drainage doing great. I did not do it on purpose just the plants got so big !
Allison
Both the begonia and the episcia (love that color pattern!)are lovely. Do you know what species or hybrid that begonia is? I gave one to a close friend over 10 years ago and she's done well with it, but we've always just called it the funky begonia.
I bought it in a little solo cup on Ebay a few years ago and it sold as Eyelash . Allison
Allison,
I take your info on episcas to heart...I have several and some are still alive while others are "sleeping"...lol
Just as I was going to through away the pots & soil to make room for other things I noticed a little baby peeking out at me...so ya just never know.
So glad to have you share you info with us.
MsC
2zeus...your violets are beautiful
They love this house - bloom like they've never bloomed before, and I've had some for years.
