Nice bouquet too!
Smelling like a swamp lilly
I have over wintered a few different forms of crinums over the years. But I do put down a good mulching on them. Variegated ones do not seem to be as hardy and as fast though.
Three blooms in a year! I didn't know they could do that...I should have taken better care of mine after it bloomed the first time, ha.
I put mine down by the creek and plan to mulch it heavily to overwinter it. Hope I don't lose it. We are in zone 6, and the last few years lots of zone 8 plants have come through winter in the ground just fine. I know eventually I will lose a whole lot of plants, but I have WAY too many anyhow.
bwilliams, what kinds of crinum have you overwintered? Mine is C. jagus.
T-man, are the blooms white? It's pretty.
That looks like a Crinum americanum to me and mine, which are in the ground, bloom sporadically from June until frost. I have several blooming right now.
yes its white,I have never let this one go dormant,so the trunk is really getting big,yes it americanum.
A nice bouquet indeed!!! Such a pretty one.
I am thrilled with my crinum. I have had them a couple of years now so they are starting to throw flower spikes out regularly all summer and fall. I used to be a big amaryllis fan but those do not do repeat blooming like these do.
I'm surprised they have developed a hybrid that would repeat bloom, they have just about everything else, and they sell so many of them during the Xmas season.
Tropicman, she is quite pretty. She looks quite young (I can tell since she has no wrinkle yet! LOL) and I didn't know one would bloom that young (small). I purchased a 10 gal one a couple of weeks ago that I'm putting out by the pool in the ground so I hope next summer she'll bloom her little heart out. You do take her inside for winter, don't you? In my zone 8a I'm hoping it won't die back or at least it should come back.
Ardesia, do yours die out and come back or do they hold their own on St. Helena?

Yes some of the leaves have wrinkles, and now she looks to be starting a new growth from the top of the stem,so there will be two tops to this plant, has anyone seen this before?
She is in a 3 gallon pot, that trunk is about 5 inches or more in diameter.
That's really pretty Don. I need to get me one of those!
Thanks,I think you'd like it.
Maybe I better dig mine up and bring it in for the winter. It would be " a crinum shame" for me to lose it, LOL.
Crinum time again for sure!!!
LOL
Lucky you,I didn't get any seed pods this go around!
greenink, I love it! Since you're in such a wonderful area please try to post lots of photos for us to enjoy! Must share a story about my crinum........My husband and I got married on Eleuthra at the Pink Sands Resort (what a lifetime treat that was!) and the morning of our wedding I walked around and cut native flowers for my bouquet. Naturally, I had crinum in the bouquet. We lived in North Carolina and I tried for a crinum there after we returned, but it just wouldn't do in that climate. Long story short, my husband died 4 years ago and I moved to Florida this year. Living here I saw lots of crinums so I purchased one and so far it's doing great. Of course, it reminds me of our wedding and wonderful memories of your beautiful islands! So any photos you'd like to share of your plants would be enjoyed by all, especially me! Thanks. Barbara
Thats a big one,I'd like to get a Queen Emma,so if any body has a few seeds lying around!!!!Please or a start!!!
Yes more pics would be wonderful!~
Thanks
T-man, why didn't you say you wanted Queen Emma? I planted the seeds cause no one wanted them! I have two more seeds that aren't quite ripe yet which I can send as soon as they ripen. (I also have a pup I just removed that I could possibly be talked out of)
ps, I remembered to send your palm seeds today.
Cala,your so sweet and kind
how am I'm doing!!!!LOL
Well I hate to impose on people, but for a Queen,I'll almost do anything!! LOL
Went to cut the dead flower stalk off tonite, and behold, found another flower stalk emerging, must be when the get a certain age they just flower one after another, almost always in flower.
Thanks so much dear!
T-man I'll get it packed and sent to you. They're working me to death at work so it will probably be Friday or Monday before I can get it packed up.
I saw some crinums with HUGE leaves on a garbage pile in front of a house. Is it polite to stop and ask for them??? or do I just snatch them out of the garbage(not sure when the truck runs that picks up yard waste). How do you say "Can I have those plants" in Spanish, lol(I think it's "Puedo tener esas plantas por favor")
Yes,followed by muchas gracias, but I'd just take them since they threw them out in the first place, saving a life is most important!!!!
Thanks, seeds came today, will try to get them planted this weekend, having to work saturday, grrr!!!!Hate overtime!
This year I think my collection will be palms, must have a new collection every year, gives me something to look forward too!!!!
I know what you mean about collections. I keep telling myself I have enough plants, then I come to DG and see something I just have to have.
I've got a Queen palm blooming, if you want some seeds I will leave the spike on the tree(they're messy, usually cut the spike before the seeds get big).
Thanks if you can stand the mess!!LOL!
Plant collecting is like me trying to say no tho chocolate, ain't gonna happen!!!LOL
BDunn, Sorry I am just now getting back to this thread. As to your question about their hardinesss in my area, they are a thug around here if there is any moisture in the soil. I had planted one in a boggy spot around 4 years ago and now have more than I can handle. We rarely have a real hard frost here but if the temp drops too low the foliage will die back but the bulbs are never harmed and they bounce right back in the spring.
Incidentially, unlike most crinums which are bulbs and multiply by reproducing new bulbs from the base of the old ones, the 'americanums' spread by runners. To me, they a lot like the EE's that run all over the place.
Tropic, are you sure you don't have an Asiaticum? The pic looks just like mine, and that's what I have. MerryMary
Mary,I think your right,I looked in my A to Z Encyclopedia,it say leaves up to 4ft and fragrant flowers, and that is what I think I have, doesn't say anything about Americana being fragrant ,and its leaves only go to 30 inches along,so thanks for the correction!!!
Queen Emma is on her way to Kansas.
Thanks your a sweetie, palm seeds are planted!!!!
Hope to have it looking like Rodero Drive, californy!!!LOL
I just thought of something, are you still looking for a Lady Margaret passi or Incense? I dug some up from the yard to save them from the lawn mower. I should have just tucked them in the box! How about a pure white Crinum splendens?(I think I've got the species correct, it's like milk and wine, just plain white though)
I have another crinum, big strap like leaves, but not as big as Emma's. White spidery flowers, very green foliage. I thought it was C. americanum but it doesn't make runners. I will have to hunt for a picture. They grow wild here.
You bet!
My incense didn't make it,I cut my lady margaret way back and brought her inside the greenhouse, she is being real slow to respond to the heavy haircut I gave her.
Are all your criniums growing in soil?
I'd like to plant them in a bog like condition, will these stand up to that?
Thanks Dear.
The one that grows wild grows in the edge of ponds. It likes it wet. I'm going to start you another box, but won't mail till Incense has recovered from being dug out of the yard(ever tried to get a passion vine out of St. Augustine grass?)
I guess it would help if I made a list of stuff that I have, lol.
LOL! Have you ever gotten them out of bermuda grass??????LOL!
That will be great!!!
Where your where I wanna live, well maybe I forgot you had a white xmas there and we didn't!!!LOL! Go figure that!!!!
Cala, Look to see if your blooms look like the first picture Tropicman posted. If so, you have asiaticum, instead of americanum. They are white, fragrant, and they do not produce runners. :)
MerryMary
The flowers look like asiaticum, but the leaves don't. I will try to get a better picture.
Cala, does your leaves have that crinkle about 2/3 up the leaf?
Mine does,I wonder if all the larger sizes have them?
I think not only has the camera been dropped too many times, but how many times have you bumbed your head??? LOL!
Posted 3 times here!!!LOL!
We still love you tho!!!!!
