If it looks too good to be true...

Sure Clare I will only use about 5 of them and the rest will be given away.

That's great. Thanks, Roger:-) I'll find something good to send you in return.

I just almost bought some "rare" cliva seeds from this guy and another Daver sent me this thread. Thanks. The seeds will go for about $100 I think so I was saved not only the money but the 5 years to grow them out to find I really had nothing special at all.

Oh, Kell. I'm so glad that you didn't get ripped off by this guy. His photo is so obviously altered, and he was caught in some lies by some people who emailed him asking for more information, and then he showed that he has a bad temper and gets very angry at people who question him. I would definitely avoid him and his auctions.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I just was taken on some other seeds on Ebay. I tell you, I may stop buying seeds on ebay entirely.

KELL,
ANYTIME YOU GET THE 'ITCH' TO E-BAY ASK US FOR SOME REPUTABLE SELLERS.
WE HAVE A RATHER NICE NETWORK. ;)

Wow! Boy, am I naive. I really didn't think things like this went on without ebay catching them. I just looked and he has one that is up to $44 and now, after hearing all this conversation, it is easy to tell the pics have been doctored. God is a fantastic creator of color, but as is often said, "God don't make that color".

There are only a few people that I will buy from on eBay, and "buyer beware" is the saying that I have in mind when I do. Unfortunately, in the plumeria world, because they are so expensive, there are many getting into the selling game, and many can't be trusted to deliver healthy cuttings and send the cultivar that you have paid for. But there are good sellers too, and we just have to share those sellers' names with each other.

I try to avoid buying on eBay if I can, but when I do want to, this is a list that I refer to. It was started by someone over at another forum, and I removed names that I don't know so this is the one that I use and would trust:

And everyone - please don't forget that plumeria do NOT grow true from seed; you could just as easily get something spectacular from plain seeds as from fancy, expensive ones. Spending more than $ 10 on seeds is, IMHO, insanity.

Here Here!!
The best growing seeds I have were given to me for free!!
I have bought more than 30 packs of seeds
Most grew, many were given away.
The freebies actually aoutnumber the bought ones 4 to 1.
One seller sent me rotted seeds, then replaced them with hibiscus seed shells!!
Then 3rd try, sent me plumie seeds, but not the ones I paid for LOL!!
He insisted I leave good feedback LOL!!

Can I tell you that I'm sitting here cracking up. I actually "won" some jade cuttings off of this guy... sent him numerous emails (Clare can vouch...I do send numerous emails...LOL) about other items...never heard...never heard. Started to get "that feeling" (then read some of his reply feedback)...then got beyond annoyed...and literally stalked him daily with the same message just with a different heading i.e. "FOURTH REQUEST - ZERO RESPONSES TO ALL PREV EMAILS" Here was my message: It appears that email responses have little to do with whether you are in or out of town. My next course of action will be to contact my bank regarding this matter & forward all info & emails to ebay. I have NEVER had this much of a challenge getting responses back. Word spreads fast in the plant forums. I understood you're having been out of town but surely you can understand from my perspective just how frustrating it's been w/no responses to emails. I still don't even know what types of jade cuttings you'd listed. I sent a timely payment over 2 weeks ago. Shipping them last Fri. would make it just under 2 weeks since pymt plus they'd end up sitting somewhere (cold) all day last Sun. (our lows have been in the 20's) The heat packs can be bought for $3 elsewhere. I've just never had this type of challege before. As per my prev emails: my pref has been to mutually agree to cancel this sale, refund my $$ minus ebay % - I believe that only to be fair to both parties

He finally responded after number 4 with "It sounds like you would rather just have your money back so let me give you a full refund right away. I don't want anything to do do with members of any plant forums period. Look for your money back today o.k. mantisbee" Likes the plant forums, doesn't he? LOL Then it took almost a week (after me messaging him TWO more times) to get my refund to me. OMG!!!!!

As has been said already by the wise ones aka Clare and Michael....STAY CLEAR!!!!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Mantisbee is a snake no doubt.
I had a few nasty e-mails from him.
I tried to engage him in some reasonable conversation regarding the nature of a plumie he claimed to have.
A friend lives near where he claims to work and also has an uncle there.
Theyve never heard of him/her LOL!!
Snake for sure!!

Michael and Chantell, you are so right:-) I'm so sorry, Chantell, that you had to go through that with him. What a bummer. I'm sorry about your bad experience too, Michael. Ebay can be a very frustrating place when you are dealing with people who are not on the up and up. I too have been on the receiving end of people's generosity and have given away some too. If anyone wants to join their local Plumeria Society, there are often plenty of seeds to go around to members.

Hetty is right that plumeria seeds do not come true, and if a flower has cross-pollinated with another flower and not self-pollinated, you can get any color or combination of colors. I suppose that some colors might be more dominant than others. And, if a plumeria self-pollinates, it will look nearly exactly like its parent. I think either Milton or Richard Eggenberger said that seeds from white flowers will most often be white, seeds from yellow flowers will most often be yellow, and seeds from reds, pink, or multi-colors can be anything. I'll see if I can find that link which talks about seeds. Here is one by Eggenberger: http://www.plumerias.com/fdx/fsget/mcps/archive/data/Plumerias/2005/10/09/10792-EggenbergerTranscribedSCPSrev2.pdf Here is another good one: http://www.theplumeriasociety.org/dyncat.cfm?catid=2022
