Gingerose, that looks three-sided so it is probably Dragon Fruit, Hylocereus undatus or Hylocereus polyrhizus. Hylocereus undatus is the more commonly seen one. Here's a link: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/54131/index.html
Some of my Epi's
oh my gosh i love them they are so nice looking i have always wanted to grow these are they fussy
Clare - Chantell here...promise I'm not stalking you from forum to forum...LOL This will probably "top" by previous question for stupidity but is there a difference between the "epi's" and the Christmas Cactis? I didn't realize that they (or do they) fall into the same category. I'd spoken to someone about some trade later on and now I'm realizing I might not have been clear in what I was looking for.
Hi Chantell! It's good to see you over here! LOL on the stalking! I'm everywhere, I'm afraid. Soon, you'll be tired of seeing my name:-)
Epiphyllums make up a fairly broad class of genus and species and hybrids and are generally and commonly called Orchid Cacti, but they are actually classified in a different genus and species than Holiday Cactus are, but they are in the same family, Cactaceae. Holiday Cactus, very generally, are usually these:
Schlumbergera x buckleyi - Christmas Cactus http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1510/index.html
Schlumbergera truncata - Thanksgiving Cactus http://davesgarden.com/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=thanksgiving+cactus&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search

Clare,
wonderful links,
would you like to ask Terry or Dave to place them on top of the forum as a Sticky post?
In particular, the Epiforums.com is very well run.
Thanks, Ursula! Will do!
Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri - Easter Cactus [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]
Hey Clare - VERY glad to see you "everywhere" - I looked at the pics and the link above looks like what I was trying to find cuttings of. How hard are they to grow/root etc.?
Hi Chantell! Thanks! You are so nice. Logee's has an Easter cactus. I actually don't have that one, but it looks very pretty. Here's Logee's site: http://www.logees.com/products.asp?dept=124 and http://www.logees.com/prodinfo.asp?number=S7521-2 and http://www.logees.com/prodinfo.asp?number=S7517-2 They are easy to root and easy to grow. The more you ignore them, the better they do.
Ignore eh? My kind of plant!!! My Christmas cactus (belonged to my grandmother prior to my getting it 10 years ago) is all budded up again...this makes it's 3rd time since fall. Amazes me every year...but I think grandma (rest her soul) has something to do with it more then I.
Thanks Clare_CA, that is a great list of links. I agree with RUK, Epiforums is a great site, very well run and great info on epi's, schlums and other epiphytic plants there.
Clare, Thanks for the great links. Good to see all your Epies again. Spring is on the way again. YEA!!!
My old Christmas Cactus is also setting buds for the third time this year. It also belonged to my Grandmother. It reminds me of her yard in the summer and her backporch where it spent the winter for more years than I can remember.
Thanks Chantell, Dagchelbo, and Betty! I'll have to check out Epiforums when I get a chance.
My Christmas Cactus is still putting out a bloom or two here and there also. That's neat that you, Betty, and Changell have plants from your grandmothers. What a neat way to keep your memory alive of her and what a neat gift that she gave you.
Yes Clare - it is a great gift! When she passed and the family was trying to figure out what various things would go home with which family member - I just kept shaking my head...didn't want anything. Was sad/mad she was gone and felt like everyone was pirating her things. Unreasonable I know...but grief is like that sometimes. While sitting there - something caught my attention out of the corner of my eye. There sitting all by inself was this Christmas Cactus. Days later weh the rest of the family was passing boxes over to be put on the plane home - I spent the time arguing with the airline folks about the Christmas Cactus that was NOT going anywhere during the flight but my lap. Sure they thought I was nuts...but that IS where it stayed. I found later many articles Grandma had made copies of - of how to get these guys to bloom (she lived in FL). Imagine my delight for at least 7 years after, to have this guy get it's first blooms of the year within days of her Oct. birthday!! To which I look upward, each time, and say, "See...it just needed to live a little further north, that's all & thanks for the help from up there."
I don't think that was unreasonable at all. I think that was extremely sensitive and respectful of you and shows what a lovely person you are. You are right about grief, my friend. I'm sure she is thrilled that you are taking care of something that she loved so much. She gave you a gift, and you are giving her one as well. I hope that, when it is my time to go, someone will love and take care of my plants after I'm gone.
Very kind words, Clare, thank you. I've seen pictures of a lot of your beauties...you just stay here with of the rest of us!! Yikes...who would I stalk with my million questions. Honestly I'm sure my kids pray I don't "go" anywhere, anytime soon (and is has nothing to do with feeling the love)...I can just see them now..."NO...it's YOUR turn to water ALL them!" LOL
LOL, Chantell, about your kids; I bet they will come to love gardening as you do in time. The love of plants and gardening often seems to be passed on to successive generations. Thanks:-)
Chantell:
Beautiful story! *sniffle* Your Grandma is smiling down on you for sure.
Betsy
Betsy,
Thank you that was very kind of you. Made my own self cry remembering it...I'm such a sap! And THAT'S probably what she's up there saying too..."Come on now Chantell...it's been like 12 years get over it already!" She had the best sense of humor. Gotta love the grandmas!!!
Can ya'll imagine the Air Marshalls now...I would be kicked off the plane, for sure! LOL
Chantell
Chantell, Thanks for sharing your story. Happy little sniffles here.
My Grandmothers and Great Grandmother shared lots of their flowers with me while they were living. Some of their special ones went to their daughters, my aunts. When they could no longer care for them they were passed to me. Both grandmothers have been gone since the 70s but I still see the face of one Grandmother in her hanging basket with the beautiful Begonia. While this aunt was taking care of it she entered it in the fair and garden club shows and won lots of ribbons. She gave cuttings to several family members. The original is hanging in my basement waiting for summer. I am going to repot this summer.
My Christmas Cactus is another of my favorites from my other Grandmother. Most of this grandmothers plants went to her oldest daughter, before this aunt passed she called and asked that I start taking them home with me. (Just a few at a time was all she could manage, Sniffle)
I don't have a clue what will happen when I depart this world. DH says all the plants go in a dumpster. LOL My daughter is the only one with an interest in them. Hopefully I will need them a lot longer. LOL
I am sure that my Grandmothers are watching out for them and will guide a new care taker to me when the time comes.
Betty

Chantell, what a lovely story and there is not doubt that your Grandmother is smiling on you. The fact that you are getting so much pleasure out of the plant only proves that it was worth it!! I am sure many of us would have done the same!!
:)
Betty,
What sweet stories & how special that you're able to take care of so many of your loved ones plants. Its so nice to feel like you have a "living piece" of them. Material things break or go to the way side...but a plant...well you can love and take care of them. THEY are alive afterall. And it sounds like YOU'VE got pedigreed plants to boot!! Dumpsters...my behind!!! Relatives first...then we all need to tell someone to post something "here" - sure nobodys babies will be dumpster bound. ;)
dag,
Thank you, too for your words...yes....my "tree-like" Christmas Cactus has been more then worth it. Everytime it's completely covered in blooms...I look up and smile!
Clare,
I so didn't mean to take over your beautiful pics with my sappy stories...forgive please.
Has anyone put different cuttings in the same pot? Or is this a "no-no?" I truly need Biology for Dummies....LOL
Chantell, I am loving the stories. No apology is necessary. Please don't ever worry about that with me. Threads are things which evolve, and it is always good here. Dave's is a great place with so many great people. It is a pleasure to know you all.
Betty, LOL at what your husband said because mine says the same thing. We'll see who's stuff gets tossed in the trash first! LOL! I'm just kidding, of course. I know hubby would much rather earn a few bucks selling my plants at a garage sale!
Chantell, sure, I stuff in cuttings if they will fit! Or you can start new plants for friends:-) You're just fine now; don't go insulting yourself! There are no dumb questions after all:-)
I have always been so bad to stuff cuttings in pots in the Fall and then come spring not have a clue what color they are. I have been able to keep my red cuttings marked, but the pink and whites are really mixed up. Don't matter, I don't know the name of any of them anyway. LOL I have had pink and white Epi's blooming in the same pot. Really pretty
I am getting better. LOL
LOL, Betty! Mine are mixed up too, and I don't care either:-) I like to be surprised to see what is going to bloom. I'm not a stickler for names when it comes to epi hybrids for some reason like I am with seemingly everything else, but I do want to keep my species correctly tagged.
LOL you all are so funny! Actually that's what I was thinking of doing...placing a hodge podge order thru Bob Smoley - don't have worry about the weather cuz it sounds like it take a little bit for those thing to arrive any-who-how! A planter w/different epis - matching colors of course. LOL Except the night bloomers--you've got me hooked, Clare if YOU say it's a good smell...I've got to have it. I'm so in trouble...I can see it now. Clare just read your site: Click here: Plumerias : Plumeria Pals : Clare's Gardhttp://www.plumerias.com/2005/05/09/story.html?xrap=y I had kept it in an email but with all the sites I've been referring to...I didn't actually get to that one until today. Lots of info - good job as always....then of course the unexpected... touched my heart...those pics of that darling baby. I know it's been a little bit but please know I'm sorry for your loss. Hope she's keeping my grandma company...and that it wasn't inappropriate to bring up here. Big Hugs!
Chantell, I haven't ordered from Bob Smoley before, but I remember mixed reviews about that business. Be sure to check Garden Watchdog here before you order.
You will love the night bloomers, Chantell! The fragrance is wonderful.
Thanks so much for the compliment about my articles. Your link doesn't seem to be working so here it is for anyone who is interested: www.plumerias.com Go down to the bottom where it says "Clare's Garden."
Chantell, that plumeria site belongs to Janel Chen, and Cali McDonald Chen was her child. I agree with you that her loss is heart-breaking. Janel is a lovely, strong, and kind woman.
Thanks for the link. Lots of great information.
Great pic!!! Night photos are not the easiest to get - yet you "done" good!!! Believe it or not...photography's my first love...then the plants. I was impressed with the pic...good coloring (whites are difficult) esp. having to use the ole flash!!
I've got even more buds coming up on Grandma's Christmas Cactus...I'll be sure to post them. I'll tell her I made her plant "famous" - on the internet for all to see...LOL
Thanks, Chantell! Can't wait to see your pics!
Well grandma's Christmas cactus is trying to make up her mind if it wants to participate in a last Hoo Rah or not...LOL. Took her picture to put up here to show what I suppose will be the last bit of color until next fall. Used my daughter's digital (yuck - still like my ole SLR). Any-who-how...here she is.....taaaa daaaa!
Very purrrrty, Chantell!
:) Donna
Different...I like!
Hi all,
I was just cruising through this thread and all your pictures are gorgeous. I also have epis. I am sending some of them. I have mine in a shade house all year round and they love it there. It does freeze here in Riverside but they have survived. I am a epi fanatic as you will see. I only have about 40 to 50 species and still collecting. I am growing myself right out of my back yard.
Enjoy
This first one is known as Clown
NJB so glad u posted that . Have a couple of cuttings of clown. They have rooted and now cant wait until they get big enough to bloom. If u have any cutting u need to get rid of would gladly give u my address and pay postage for them. Judy
NJB- beautifull bloom...can't wait to see blooms off my various epis...I've got a bit to wait though...*sigh*
I just had my first blooms on my 'Whirligig' I did cheat by buying it budded, but it's still fabulous. I have a few more but have no idea what they will look like. One is 'happiness is' another is 'Dragon Heart' and 'Bumpkin'
I bought a sawtooth rhipsalis on eBay and the seller sent them as gifts. They're rooted now and two have this funky root growth at the tip and then a new sprout.
I bought about 6 of them at the Garden Show in SFO a few weeks ago, but they're in the greenhouse and I can't remember the names off hand.
What a beautiful Whirligig!
Lovely pics, you guys! I have buds on some of mine now, and they will probably open in about another month.
Hi Clare. I have a few Christmas Cactus (didn't know they were call epi's) and was wondering about pruning. I had one this winter get so top heavy that it broke off at the base. Should I keep them pruned so they don't get too top heavy? Will this affect the blooming?
Thanks,
Patricia
