I got a kafir lime with the huge fruits - size of a small grapefruit- instead of small bumpy limes. Anybody there has a kafir lime with similar fruit. Would be happy to give you seeds.

never heard of that one. I have the regular one in a pot on my deck and it produces enough leaves and fruit for me.
i've always wanted to try cooking thai food and many dishes call for kaffir lime leaves. now that this has been brought up, i'm looking for local nurseries that have kaffir lime trees/plants. while i'm at it, i'll look up mexican/key lime, too.
Here's Four Winds Growers info on Kaffir:

I got my Key lime at Navlet's in the East Bay.
thanks, candy!
You can definitely find them locally, I got mine at OSH I think. If you are willing to wait I can try to root some cuttings from my tree.
GEGuru, that's sweet. Thanks, I'll take you up on that. I have daffodils and some tulips to trade. Please let me know. Oh, and peonies.
Wonderful response - however it does not help to explain my strange - BIG- un-bumpy fruit - I am not complainig you see - but would like to know if someone else had THAT kind of fruit - I am thinking, maybe the kafit was grafted on a grapefruit ?
hold off on the cuttings, GEGuru and marmalade! (but offer is STILL good on the bulbs and peonies)....called osh and they do have them right now, and i'm just going to drive there. all excited all of a sudden.

marmalade, are you sure it's a kaffir lime? Does it have the signature double leaves?
Is it possible a rootstock sucker has taken over?
GEGuru, welcome to DG, btw!
Thanks :)
My Kafir lime has a few fruits that are less bumpy than normal but their size is about the same as the other ones.
To : GreeneyedGuru : what is a signature double leaf ? It has leaves that are very perfumy , but look jist like big citrus leaves and prodigious thorns.
This is the double leaf of the Kaffir Lime

If you haven't got leaves shaped like that, you definitely don't have a Kaffir Lime. Of course, having that leaf shape doesn't *guarantee* a Kaffir Lime because it seems Yuzu also has that leaf shape. But Yuzu leaves don't smell as heavenly as Kaffir Lime leaves do.
I tried growing Kaffir Lime from seed I purchased but the 3 seeds were very dry when I got them and none germinated. This year a friend in Singapore posted me fresh seeds in a ziplock bag. Unfortunately it was 3 weeks between posting and my getting them here in Belize. I thought they had started to ferment, they seemed to be in a sort of juicy mush, but I planted them anyway and I now have 9 germinations. Every time I have planted really fresh citrus seed it has germinated. My experience is DONT let seed dry out. Some instructions recomment drying but I think they may be wrong.
