looking for helpers (hybrid seed)

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

you should have it today. you're actually closer than I am. I tried to track it via USPS, but it doesn't give any info.
boo hoo... It's a gloomy day (but at least it's not raining right now - big storm due in tonight again) and perfect for unpacking and grooming AVs

I guess it depends on what time the packages went out. tomorrow !

I sowed the seeds on Dec. 5. This is where they're at now.

Do you have photos of the parents in bloom?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

WOW they aure grow faster than from a leaf ! So cute. Do you feed them ? Are they under lights ?

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

oops, I thought I had responded to this thread.

They are under lights, and I just opened them for the first time since sowing. I gave them some dilute seaweed fert last night, and squished the pot a bit. It was in a ziploc bag, but is now semi-enclosed.

The parents - unfortunately I don't have pics.

The father is from Park's Seed's Royal mix - it's a dark purple created by crossing to Park's Royal mix streps. I think Parks may have a pic in their catalog.

The mother is a single white flower with narrow leaves. It came from the AGGS mixed packet of gessie seeds.

Key,
Well the plant stork arrived and brought with her a dozen little baby special hybridized streps! So I'm a proud strep mom in many ways. I have these babies, Some leaves down (not quite babies yet) then I have some young strep children from DP bargain violet sale in 2.5" pots, and then the new blooming streps that I found yesterday at our florist!

They sprouted pretty fast! I only just planted them on the 29th and noticed them last night when I went to bed. I have them on that new bedroom plant stand. I used a perlite mix with soil-less potting mix and just a bit of peat. I got the mix wet with warm water, just enough to moisten it, and when I got a fist full and made a ball, it wouldn't hold together, so it was pretty loose. They are just about the same size as Nanna's above.

The container is a low 1.25" high clear plastic box with a lid. I used my soldering iron to poke numerous holes in the top and bottom and then put a wick in just in case I needed it later. (didn't know what I was doing as far as Strep culture so I was winging it)

They went under grow lights, but no extra heat. They get artificial light but are near enough to the window to get indirect light too. My lights go on about 6:30 am (any earlier and DH might change his mind about the plant stand being in the bedroom) and off about 10 or 11, when ever DH goes to bed. (I'm the nightowl in the fam) so that is +/-15 -16 hours of light a day.

I keep meaning to get a photo of the container I used but I keep forgetting. Anyway, I'm very excited about the new baby news! and wanted to share

Key, I just had a thought, since all three of my streps are blooming, how difficult would it be for me to try and pollinate one or two? What would I need to do? Thanks!

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

it's very easy - take pollen off one, and put it on the pistil of another. tag the stem with date of pollination and parents etc.

I think on most, the pollen is ready before the pistil, so if you don't have enough of the right flowers blooming at the right times, take some pollen and save it. (wrap in paper, put in semi-closed baggie (it needs to be dry), refrigerate - at least, that's what I do because it's relatively humid here) https://mmm09.boca01-verio.com/aggsor/cgi-local/bbs.cgi?forum=hybridizing&task=show_msg&msg=0058.0001

Couple of notes:

- some hybrids may not be fertile (may not have pollen etc)

- some will self pollinate - see this http://208.55.167.8////////cgi-local/bbs.cgi?forum=hybridizing&task=show_msg&msg=0024.0001

generally, it's a really really really easy process.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Key, do you use a Qtip or paintbrush or something to take the pollen off?
Thanks for the links! I'm going to give it a try, what the heck... you just never know...

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

Usually I use a.... fingertip? but if you are doing crosses with more than one pollen parent, remember to use a diff finger each time. ;-)

cool that you're going to give this a try.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I guess mine are not coming up :(
I am so bummed!
Hopefully I will do better next tine!
