Nature,
that would be great! So it's a trade?
CLOSED: Have lily longiflorum (?) seed to trade
Hi everyone,
Here's a link for lily propagation: http://www.lilies.org.uk/html/propagation.html
My lily seed falls mainly into the hypogeal delayed category, but since it's hybrid, the other categories might apply to a lesser extent. Anyhoo, following the guidelines, I'm planning to germinate as follows:
11/21/05 - 2/13/06: keep seeds sown on edge in sterile potting soil medium per instructions in above link throughout this time period around room temperature (65 degrees F). Will keep the flat in a loosely covered plastic bag - occasionally airing out but keeping not too wet or too dry. Some people soak the flat with chamomile tea against fungus (have not done personally). Including some peat in the mix plus sprinkling the peat over the seed is also thought to retard damping off fungus.
2/14/06 - 4/1/06: Put in refrigerator for this period. Temperatures will be too cold in the freezer. Keep in plastic bag.
4/2/06: I'm putting this flat out on the front porch where slugs/critters don't tend to rampage. The temps don't normally go below 28 degrees F after 4/2 here, so the seeds hopefully will enjoy a natural transition between the 2nd cool period and 3rd warm period needed for their germination.
Hope this helps.
Berrygirl, thanks for putting my name on your lily seed list.
9kitty, thank you for offering marigold seed, but I have too much shade for those and already have sweet william and cleome seed.
If anyone wants to trade seed of crunchy salad greens like cos or romaine lettuce; Chinese brassicas like mizuna or Bok Choy; frilly endive; red radicchio; mustards, etc., that would be great.
Otherwise, don't worry about trade and enjoy your seeds.
Wow this thread makes my head spin :0
I finally got envies out in the mail..... I hope I got everyone LOL If my herad wasn't attached right now, I swear I'd lose it someplace.
Hopefully you all get them soon!
Janis
I know I should wait until I receive envies from you folks, but Monday will be the only day I can send anything out next week - Woofens, will have yours in the mail tomorrow. When your envie comes, it'll help me out with postage/etc. costs the next time I mail seeds somewhere.
Woofens, I once met someone with a "firmly attached head" and blinders and bit to go with it - LOL
berrygirl,
Yes, it's a trade.

bluespiral,
I have some seeds for you then.

berrygirl,
I received your seeds. Thanks so much for them!
bluespiral,
Since you've already sent the seeds to me, what should I send to you? Would you like a blank bubble envie and a couple stamps or just stamps or what? I'm sorry I didn't get the SASBE to you in time.
Thanks to both of you!
RG
Raingazer, a blank bubble envelope and stamp would be fine.
One of the folks I'm sharing seed with had a few more questions about germinating lily seed, so will post those questions and my "answers" in next post.

My post of 11/20/05 @ 6:09 am has been germinating questions, so here are my "answers" - my germinating plans consist of an experimental approach along with what I've read.
1) To conserve space in the frig, how shallow can the tray be?
Although I will be using cleaned, sterilized and recycled plastic trays from the hardware store that come with cell inserts, following are a couple of potentially refrigerator space saving methods I will also be experimenting with:
a) Baggy Method - I'm going to try mixing some seed in a ziplock bag with barely moist peat in the refrigerator. Maybe I'll try a second bag with no water added to compare which works best. Since this works for propagating lilies by putting scales broken off from the bulb into a bag of peat and then into the frig in order for bulblets to form at the base of the scale, I'm wondering if it might also work for seed.
I don't know how long the process takes - will start checking after 6 weeks and give it up to 3 months. The drawback with this is that if a root appears, it will have to be transplanted into a pot, and I don't know how well the rooted - but topless - seed will transplant. I think it's worth a try.
b) winter sowing
( http://www.wintersown.org/ ) - I've had a couple of lilies volunteer from seed where their pods have briefly lain during fall cleanup, so will also try wintersowing (I use recycled Wendy's salad bowls (among many kinds of plastic packaging otherwise destined for the trash) for this - you're supposed to make holes in the plastic, transparent lid (some people use plastic wrap, alternatively) for some rain/snow to get through to the medium, but not enough for a washout.)
I'm also going to try covering a winter-sowed pot with a piece of "row cover" that gardeners sometimes put over crops to keep out bugs in summer or to get a couple weeks' head start on sowing seeds outside before the last frost. These row covers are made of woven polyethelene which is porous and lets rain come through.
2) Does sowing seed "on edge" mean sowing them sideways?
I'm going to try sowing some flat and some sideways and see what happens.
3) Do they need to be covered with a light layer of potting mix?
I'm going to cover my seeds after laying them on top of the potting mix with just a light layer of peat because of its reputed antifungal and antiseptic properties - not potting mix. In general, I have noticed less damping off with my own seedlings doing this. (In any case, I am not going to be using potting mix without adding more peat and perlite to it - might throw in some builder's sand (constructiton sand), too.) I am sorely tempted to soak the tray or pot with a fungicide, since the longer any seed sits in its pot, the more naughty episodes Mother Nature has planned for it.
Hope this helps - would love to hear from anyone else on their experience or knowledge or "what if" ideas.
Ok my head is also spinning but can I get in on the trades. I don't seem to have anything on anyone's list, but sure would like to have the seeds.
OMG! Now my head is really spining. I like that site bluespiral! It's just right for northern gardeners; just like us. You've solved my mystery of seeds before that were probably good but were not grown the correct way; therefore they rotted.
Thank you very much!

blue,
Got your seeds yesterday. Yours going out this morning. PLMK when you get them!
THANKS for trading!!
Woofens,
Got your seeds today. Yours to go out Friday.
Ansonfan,
Got your seeds today. Yours to go out Friday.
bluespiral,
I received your seeds today. Yours will go out on Friday.
Thank you!
I started this thread from your ideas and link: Propagation: Winter Sowing Seeds Idea http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/558476/

Thanks for the seeds, bluespiral! I just got them sowed and tucked inside for their warm period.
A note about seed growing: I have never done this before, but my plant propagation book recommended using a pot at least 3.5 to 5 inches deep because the bulbs start developing quickly and don't like to be disturbed. I'm glad I read that because I was planning to use shallow containers that could easily be slipped into the fridge.
Many thank yous to -
Robin - I must spend more time on that Propagation Forum - there's one more link regarding propagating tricky seed that I'll put over there as well as here. This has to do with using the plant growth hormone "giberrellic acid" - http://www.jlhudsonseeds.net/GibberellicAcid.htm
I'm too cheap to buy the wherewithall to try this, but it looks pretty interesting.
Lilystorm - that makes sense - will certainly try it
Woofens and 9kittymom - thankyou for sending those stamps and bubble envelopes
Ansofan - sent your seeds out a couple of days ago - good luck
berrygirl - your're welcome, will do and
Happy Thanksgiving, all
OK everyone,
This thread has gotten kinda confusing with two of us trading here- LOL!! And with the holidays it's getting hairy anyway. I will apologize in advance and say I am very sorry if you haven't heard from me.
If you wanted to trade with me for my lily seeds and I did not acknowledge you on this thread [after you posted your intent], or if you have already sent me seeds and I have not sent yours PLEASE post and LMK. Also, please note: I wait until I receive sasbe or seeds before sending them out.
THANKS!!
9kittymom,
did you still want to trade?
berrygirl you have D-mail.
Susan
=^..^=
patrob,
I never heard back from you on the offer. Do you still want to trade your marigold seed for mine?
berrygirl,
I received the seeds from you. Thank you so much!
bluespiral,
I've been very sick and haven't gotten your BE out yet, but I haven't forgotten you. I just haven't been able to get anything sent out. I went back to the doctor yesterday, so hopefully I'll feel better in a day or so and it will go right out to you. I just didn't want you to think I was trying to stiff you for the envie and stamp. Thanks for having patience with me.
RG
Raingazer, don't worry about me - I've been in your shoes, so take care of yourself first. I mainly hated for the seed to go to waste. Some day down the road, you'll pay me back by gifting someone else serendipitously.
You're too sweet, blue, but I want to send it to you. I promised I would and I wouldn't feel right about it if I didn't. I'll still share with someone in the future! ;o)
Thanks!
RG
Oooops!
Sorry, wrong place.
