Overwintering Impatiens Cuttings

Culpeper, VA(Zone 7a)

I have some lovely - if common - Impatiens planted in some 1/2 whiskey barrels.

As frost time is fast approaching, I was wondering if it would be worth it to bring in some cuttings to root as houseplants. I have more than enough natural light to grow anything, so light isn't a problem.

I'm more concerned with them getting too big before it would be warm enough again for me to plant them outdoors in the spring. Not to mention becoming a salad bar for the cats. . . .

Any thoughts/ideas?

I love Iimpatiens, too. I use them as a stable in my garden.
Here's a few thoughts that might help....
You could use an old aquarium or those clear plastic storage boxes to grow them in,since they don't need much light you might be able to stack them.
Any of the containers could be fitted with a lid to keep the kitties from munching on them. I had to do that for my Chi pups & my African Violets...:)

Since they are pretty easy you can always pinch them back and keep a few pots of each kind and then as spring gets closer use the cuttings to start extras for the yard.

Hope that helps...

I took cutting of mine last fall & everyone of them just molded & died. I have a pot with some double pink ones in it I may try to just bring the whole thing in the GH & see if they hang on until spring.
Good Luck!
