I have very few MG's that survived our heat & drought this summer. The ones that did make it have nice, plump GREEN seedpods and show NO sign of maturing and drying up.
Now, this one and most of my others bloomed the 3rd week of August. It is now October (almost two months later) and STILL no ripe pods.
What gives?!
Thanks!
Sandy
So HOW long from bloom to seed?
Hi Sandy - I have the same problem sometimes. The plants grown in my greenhouse (high heat and humidity) seem to bloom better and earlier than the ones grown outside. My Japanese MG's went for a whole month longer than my smaller varieties before they bloomed. Who really knows why. Maybe the soil? Amount of water? Could be a combination of things that occur.
BTW - pretty photo you posted!
Dennis
Sandy - you got blooms in the 3rd week of August...Lucky you...I sprouted(!) mine the 2nd week of August anfd just got blooms in the beginning of October...The I.hederacea is the sprinter of the group, with the I.purpureas coming in second...THe Ipomoea nil,are taking their sweet ole' time...they'd better hurry up if they want to survive to see another season...
The ones you posted there look like No Benis...Yes(?)...No(?)...nice healthy lookingh flowers...
I've found alot of the rare Japanese types to have anthers that often do not dehisce,so no pollen is released...and for both the anthers and the stigma to undergo a curious sort of premature senescence...often even before the flowers open...the multiple(!) ways that some of the rare JMG's corolla's are folded up is absolutely amazing that they manage to open up at all...I've never seen such multiple folding before...especially on the Fuji Shibori's and the Kanoko's...
TTY,...
The MGs in the photo are Akatsuki no Beni. They did very well despite the massive neglect they suffered during the drought and heat. Yes Ron, I would agree with the folding. I helped some of mine along so they could display their glory! They didn't seem to like it too well though and they ended up tearing most of the time :0(
