Hello friends.
My brugs have looked really good until this last week when my leaves began looking like this.
My Brugs are under attack! A Lil Help Please?
Then I found this lil guy on the under side of a couple leaves. I've never seen this bug until now.
This photo shows the bug I'm talking about but don't let the size confuse you. The actual size is less than 1/8 of an inch long. I just got ahold of a new macro lens that will be making it easier for me to take pictures and hopefully ID more pests.
I can't believe the close ups this lens allows, just amazing.
Please look and see if you recogonize this pest please.
Here is a side view of the same bug.
I've seen similar damage on other plants but have never seen the pest that causes it. The weather is much cooler out now and I'm wondering if that is the only reason this thing posed so long for these photos.
I need to figure this out ASAP. I was going to start bringing my brugs in and was hoping the new leaves would be healthier. Now it appears the pest damage it worse than ever:(
Thanks for your help,
JD
I LOVE your bug pics!!! Too cool. What kind of lens and what kind of camera?? I need to get a lens too. LOL. GREAT shots.
I will give you the uneducated guess of an ahpid. I get yellow ones here. But I am not used to seeing them so up close and personal.
I have no clue as to what is wrong with your brug leaves. They do not look do bad to me. In fall they can get funky, I notice.
So sorry about the bug, I don't know what it is, But I love your photography!
Some of my Brug leaves were starting to look a little chewed and worn before I started moving in for the winter. I pull off all of the leaves and spray the rest. Gets rid of any little guys that were causing problems.
I don't know what the bug is either, but I am also impressed with the detail of your photos. Good luck!
I hope someone comes along that can recognize this pest. Close ups with a good macro are always amazing to me. No doubt, you are going to enjoy your new macro lens.
maybe a thrip ?
JDL, I do believe that there is an insect section ...I will see if I am right and let you know. Jeanette
I couldn't get all of the pictures to come up. I'm on dial-up. Maybe you can do it. There are a whole slew of them on there. Jeanette
It's a winged aphid http://www.biosurvey.ou.edu/okwild/misc/images/wingaph.jpg they also come with black spots like yours. http://ftsg.ifas.ufl.edu/APSIBC.HTM
picabo,
what do you use to spray ?
I just ask my son to lugg in my only 2 Brug's ....SO FAR...and some leaves have white flys.Have strayed them with just dishsoap/water but the leaves ended up spotted.Must have gone to close,
Brigitte
Thanks for the compliments on my pics. I too am very amazed at how they turned out, this was the 1st time I used them.
The camera is a Sony Mavica CD-300, nothing really fancy or outragious. I bought it 2nd hand on Ebay for about 260$. This camera has macro settings but this option is only good for flower close ups. Anything closer than that is all blur.
Then I bought a lens adaptor tube that allows me to fit 52mm filters and lenses. It's the poor mans means of trying to get hi$ camera results. Then I bought a package of several filters/lenses that just screw on the end. These are the very cheap filters too, all no name brand that came from a company in India. I used 2 lenses screwed together to get this kind of close up. The 1st 1 is merely called "Macro Lens" then to get in closer I added another filter named "Close-up +4". When I stacked the 2 together, that is what enabled the extreme close up on the bug. I was just as shocked and amazed with the results as you guys. These close-up filters come in many "powers" from +2 to +10 and they can stacked on top of each other to further multiply the close up power.
I can't wait to play with all the other filters that came in this kit and see what else I can do. The bug in the pictures above is about twice the size of a red spider mite.
Here is a picture of what the 2 "filters" or "lens adaptors" look like that I used for the close ups.
The company I bought them from is still offering the package deal that includes these 2 filters plus about 28 others that vary from colored filters to trick photography "multi image" filters.
I don't think DG allows me to post links promoting a company for products like this. If your interested, go to ebay and do a search for "lens filters" and you'll find 1 comapny offering a package of roughly 30 some filters for about 50$. When I bought mine, they were at 40$!!! I may never use all of them but I'm finding more uses everyday.
Back to my pest problem. The picture of the leaves showed that distorted leaf curl I've been seeing a lot of lately but I can't decide what pest does that damage. I know its not the bug I posted but I had to try and ID it while I was doing this.
I'll try to take more pictures today.
Thanks for all your help friends;)
Jeff
