Overwintering my Passion Flower 'Clear Sky'

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I just brought in my Passion Flower, because our night temps have slipped into the 40s. I now have it hanging in a south window, where it will be all winter. What, if anything, do I need to do special through the winter? How much should I water it? Do I fertilize it? Do I prune it back? I have absolutely no experience with these, and I'm horrible with indoor plants in general (although I can grow just about anything outside).

HELP! (please)

Hi! I'm overwintering my Lady Lavender Passiflora in the basement where it is cooler, more humidity and not quite under the grow lights. The first year I tried overwintering on the main floor and it dried up and died. I was watering it but it was to warm for it. This year I really cut mine back because it was huge and it was giving off to much moisture for DH...lol. I think it's better for the plant anyways. I water it just enough to keep it alive. I hope this helps.

Thanks! I just brought mine in this week, and I just noticed that it's got several buds on it! This, after not blooming for about two months outside. I don't think I'll cut it back unless it gets out of hand (or the cats start trying to play with it). It's in my utility room, on the main floor. If I put it in the basement, it will die for sure, because I'll forget about it.

I just got a small watering can to use for watering it, that has a sprinkler end on it (rose?), instead of just a spout. I know if I just pour water on it, it tends to run off, but if I use the sprinkler head, I can control the amount and distribution of the water. I think that will make a difference. I'm going to mist it occasionally, too, but we had such a hot, dry summer here, and I don't think I lost more than a couple of leaves on it all summer, so maybe I don't need to do that.

Of course you wouldn't want to cut yours down since you haven't seen it bloom. I'm sure you'll be fine. Keep me posted on how it does. You might want to try and take some cuttings in case it doesn't do to well or for trades.

Oh, it was in bloom when I got it in May, and bloomed for awhile after that, but then stopped. I've had it LOOK like it was going to bloom, and then the little pods were empty. What's up with those? These might end up like that, too, but I hope not.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Not sure about the empty pods. All I can think of is that maybe some kind of bug ate it.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

No, it doesn't look like that. They look perfectly formed. Maybe they aren't buds? They're about 3/4-inch in diameter, round, with nothing inside.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Hmmm...weird than. I don't have this one but maybe it was the seed pod.

I took a picture of what I was talking about. There are several of these on the plant, all of various sizes. The largest one looks like it might be full of a flower. The rest look empty. This is what happened earlier in the season as well. Then after a bit, they just fell off, still empty.

Well, after a month inside, it's doing WELL! I've had two blooms and there are three more coming on. So, so far, so good! Let's see...only 6 more months to go... LOL

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

If you're doing fine now, you'll do fine in 6 months!

Indoor bloom #3 opened this morning. I took a series of photos while it opened. This whole process of opening only took about 40 minutes!

Oh Kylee!!! That's GORGEOUS!!!

The gal who owns the nursery here in Muscoda had one last summer that was HUGE! I'll have to try to find the pics I took when I visited there. I didn't know we could actually *keep* them without greenhouse conditions. (I guess you know what you've done now, don't you? Gotta get me one...gotta get me one!)

And FORTY *minutes*!!! That's ALL it took to open fully? WoW! I'd have been sitting in front of it too! (BTW...that new camera is doing a great job!)

When I bought it at the Cleveland Flower Show in May, I didn't pay any attention to the hardiness of it. In my awe and excitement, and 'assuming' that they wouldn't sell anything there that wasn't hardy there (LOLOLOL), I didn't even check that. After I'd spent my money (I think it was $30, and there are three vines in there), I read the ID card with it. Oh boy. I kill indoor plants.

So, if I can do this, so can you!! And I just ordered a 'Lady Margaret' from Logee's. I got the small one, just in case this was luck with 'Clear Sky.' LOL. (Got two abutilons, too - 'Kristen's Pink' and 'Ruffles.') So I know what you mean about being in trouble. I can't stop...and believe me, I do NOT have money for these things right now. Darn credit card...I've never carried a balance and I don't want to start either, but if worse comes to worse... See what a serious gardening addiction can do???

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

LOL...know the feeling, Kylee...I've just about gotten my summer and fall splurges paid off...and now here you go starting me up again. Can you post a link for Logee's (LOL)

https://www.logees.com/searchprods.asp

Just type 'passiflora' in there, hit enter, and drool...

Kylee,

GORGEOUS. Oh, and thanks for the link,,,,like I really need another link,,,LOL

LOL!!

As you can see, there is another bud that will be opening very soon, too. And another that you can't see in those pictures. I'm lovin' this!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Kylee...I found Logee's in the Watchdog...clicked on it and, as you said "Drool". I couldn't remember the name of the one you had but I completely fellin love with Clear Ski (Why'd they spell it that way? Looks like ya needs boards strapped to your feet to grow it. hehe)

Anyway...Thank goodness hubby caught me before I do any damage to my credit card. LOL Had to go out and scoop up pine needles and get them bagged for mulch after the ground freezes. So Logee's will have to wait until after supper. :-)

Yeah, I noticed they spelled it that way, too, and I don't know, but it appears to be the same one I have. I'm sure it's a typo. I noticed on their Abutilons, they have 'Bartley Schwartz' spelled two different ways on the same page, too.

Do you want me to remind you to get back to Logee's later? ;-)

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

oooo Kylee,

I'm thinkin' yer pushin' it,,,LOL

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

And do you want to buy some passifloras, too? Oh, and they have quite a variety of abutilons...

:-p

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

Don't keep temptin' me,,,,I'm easy,,,LOL

No easier than I am! I actually am entertaining the thought of paying interest on a credit card balance! :-o

No, I wouldn't do that for real. I never have and I don't intend to start now. But we really are on a tight budget right now and I should NOT have bought more flowers.

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

oh, I know that feeling. I really went overboard on hostas this summer,,,I get this kind of obsessiveness about hostas,,,,and am paying for it now,,,,,oh why didn't I listen to the good twin instead of the evil one,,,,,LOL

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

My problem is that I'm getting obsessive about too many things! LOL

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

Oh Kylee,

Me too,,,,my Therapist told me I should Hyper-Focus whenever I get the chance,,,,OY,,,,another thing to Obsess over,,,taking time from obsessing to Hyper-Focus,,,,LOL

Bill tells me all the time I get way too obsessive about things,,,LOL sounds like we are 2 peas in a pod where that is concerned.

Just wish I could get that obsessed with cleaning my house. Not that it's filthy mind you but, that is probably the only thing I don't get too obsessed about. Now, just admitting that, I probably will,,,LOL,,,,Oh, woe is me,,

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Did you have to bring THAT up? *rolls eyes*

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

LOL,,,sorry

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

HEY!! Wait a minute!! What do you mean *2* peas in a pod?! Sounds to me from reading this conversation that there are *THREE* peas in THIS pod! (I'm just not talking. hehehe)

~julie~

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

julie,,,
LOL,,,O.K. 3 peas in a pod.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

I think there's room for a couple more peas in our pod. LOL.
