Will they ever flower, in these pots? They've not been out of the greenhouse this year. They stayed inside all summer, and did fine, are growing quite well, but still in these pots, and I feel like they are outgrowing them fast. I doubt theyll ever do anything, but it would be nice
first one is a plantain, I must have been nuts growing this one and not sticking to dwarves. Picture of the pot first.
Do you think anything will be come of these bananas
I think Karyn had some flower in their pots. She lives in NY and keeps them in the greenhouse in the winter.
well, that's encouraging, thanks.
maybe they'll bloom for me as well sooner or later
I don't know much about nanas, but apparently flowering is determined by age, assuming the plant is reasonably healthy. Why not keep them through the winter, maybe in holes, then take them outside and either into bigger pots or the ground next spring?
I think i'll do that.
kathy
I hope you will send a progress report next year.
I keep wondering if my own red banana will finally flower, maybe next year. I know that the fruit is not good eating on this variety, but it would be fun to watch, and then to learn how to care for the family when mama passes on!
yours isn't the blood banana is it? cause if it is that one doesn't bloom. Just wondering
kathy
I got it as a generic banana "roja" or "rojo" a couple of years ago. I do not think it is a blood banana, but I am not sure if that might be another name for it. I saw a different name once, but didn't write it down. I know that it stays small, and is a mix of a deep, bluish green with lots of deep red in the leaves, and probably doesn't go above 8 or 10 feet tall. Blooms would be great, but I just love the leaves, so no matter!
kathy_ann,
Keep up the good work!
They will flower for you.
There are at least 3 Rojo's that I know of.
Musa sumatrana, M. zebrina and M. sumatrana X zebrina are all marketed under Musa Rojo.
Also confusing the mix are Rowe's Red, Rowes Red and Rojo Red.
These Rowe's looks like a Zebrina but redder.
I've flowered zebrina and 'Bordelon' indoors in pots.
Just keep growing them like you were doing outside and get them a ton of light.
Warm days and cool nights seem to have set them off.
Here's 'Bordelon' last January.

Wow, cool pic Ric, in January no less. Giveme high hopes.

Interesting - I was looking at my rojo today, thinking about bringing it in for the winter, and realized that the original parent stem had pooped out. You couldn't even tell, the pups had filled the pot so beautifully. In fact, it is more balanced now, with 3 stems spread around the pot. Anyhow - it certainly never bloomed, at least nothing obvious. So which one does that make it of the three 'rojos'?
Peter
Mine flowered in a pot and I did get nana's from it
yours look great
My only sugestion is put them in the biggest pot you can, yours look pretty good so you should be all set
Thanks for the help, I might not be able to find bigger pots till spring, Every place that sells them isn't selling them any longer. LOL.
