Remusatia vivipara tubercles

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

For another neat Aroid like no other try this plant.

The Remusatia are the only epiphytic Aroid I know of.

It grows in the rocks from a tuber. (Which can be stored dormant like a potato.)
Originally from the Himalayas it has now spread all over Asia and Africa.

These are the bulbils that grow on a stolon pushing up in late Summer..
They have hooks on them.
As an animal brushes up against them they detach and are carried off to start elsewhere.
Hinse the name 'Hitchhiker' Elephant Ear.

From a larger tuber they send up a flower first then later the leaves.
My tuber was too small to flower, but the first leaf was easily 6" across and 16" tall.

It definitely is a cool plant the way it propagates.

These are for seedlings.
When I got mine they were tubers.

If you've not dealt w/ Cloud Jungle I can highly recommend them.
Harry gets good plants but small.
Great terrarium plants.
Many cuttings available in the Winter also.
My A. cuprea, Bullata and Green Shield also came from there.
Along w/ some great philos and Monstera.

The remusatia is a great plant. I have seen it grown in soil and as well as a epiphyte. It is very strange with its odd burs I don't know of any other species in the aroid group that does this. I grew it for a few years. I heard it was hardy to zone6 I did not have much luck with it as far as being hardy. I will have to order it again when I find the space to have one.
I see you got it from my very good friend Harry. Harry has some great terrarium plants. I have traded with him for years. A few years back Harry and I and another friend went to Atlanta's botanical garden. Got to go in the back and take photos as well as a lot of interesting cuttings. He loves to deal in miniatures and has one of the best selections of miniature terrarium plants I know of. Glad to see him mentioned here.

I've dealt w/ Harry several times and love his little plants.

As for growing the HH from seed.
It's probably the tubercles which aren't seeds technically.
They are I guess propagules (sp?).
I just put them on damp spag and covered them.

So far no luck w/ them coming up but it's early.
