Another Hoya Score!

Heather... you got it!! I'm a auditory/visual learner from the word go! If you SHOW me as you EXPLAIN IT to me, I'll know it forever - or at least until senility strikes! Thanks for the heads up, by the way.. I'll check it out.

OK. The place where the leaves are is called a 'node'..a leaf node. Roots come out of the bottom of the node and along the stem, and new growth comes out of the top of it..right close to the 'axil' which is where the petiole (leaf stem) meets the vine part. So the internode is the distance between nodes. On H. lacunosa the internodes are very short...while on H. archboldiana they are very long. I'll see if I can take a picture of a drawing I have that will help explain this....

Boy...did we hijack this thread or WHAT? LOL

Oh gosh.. and that is terribly rude where boards are concerned. So, Betsy, my apologies for drifting off-topic. I seem to lose all sense of propriety when it comes to learning about the eighth wonder of the world.... HOYAS!!!!!!!!!!!!
:-(
And Carol... thanks!

Barb...this happens all the time...I don't mind at all...in fact, it makes it interesting. I was only commenting!! LOL It is my favorite thing to do...hijack threads! I love it!

Carol, I'm more than certain that I'll do it again, because my mind seems to run in tangents... first one direction, then another.. and another.. It's a wonder I ever get anything done! Maybe medication would help... lol! Nahhhh... I doubt it!
No worries..

Oh Betsy-y-y-y-y-y-y..... you can share those cuttings you were going to send me with another lucky soul!
Because.. because... guess what I found today at HD??? Yup! My very own H. kentiana!!! Granted, it's only a 6" pot and looks like it has seen better days (who wouldn't after hanging around at HD for a while?), but soon it will start putting out new and healthy growth. I'll just print out a pic of yours and put it near mine.. nothing like a bit of leaf envy to start the growth juices flowing, right? ;-)

Great score, Barb! I've never seen hoyas at all at our HD.

Thanks, Donna! All the Hoyas I have seen at any of our HDs have been Angel plants. Maybe you could talk to your local HD manager and ask them to talk to the Angel supplier to see if they can start getting them. Ever since I read Carol's warning about the soil they use, I make sure and repot any from that supplier. Also, take their labeling with a grain of salt. This one was labeled "H. bella". I also saw a Lipstick plant labeled as H. carnosa. Good luck with your local HD manager.

Never thought of doing that. Thanks for the suggestion, Barb.

Oh, way to GOOOOO, Barb! It's such a thrill to find a hoya at HD, isn't it?! you will have that hoya whipped into shape in no time. Post pics, k?
Congrats......=)

RE the soil: Sandyc told me she has GREAT success watering from the bottom and leaving the Exotic Angel plants in their original soil. Just put them in a saucer or a dish and put water in it....right, Sandy????

I lost a few of them watering from the top...So now I just set them in a dish of water with what ever I want to add. Winter time I really watch how much water I let them get--Just damp at the top.......So far so good....Sandyc

Sandy...do you leave water in the dish for long, or just until it soaks it up for the day...& then don't water again till it starts feeling dry or what?

Not like the Bella-----I try to check it every 1/2 hour by seeing how wet the soil is at finger deep------once it starts feeling wet I hange it in the tub to drain off......the point is to not let the EA soil get real wet at the top......after you pull it out of the water , the soil still pulls more water to the top.............Sure hope that I am making sence!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When my plants are outside in the summer it does not seem to mater how wet they get just as long as I water from the bottom........
