Another Hoya Score!

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

When I finally realized that HD meant "Home Depot" & that it was pretty common to score a good hoya at Home Depot, I made a point to learn where every HD is in Illinois....just in case. (we don't have one here where I live...)
Well, it paid off BIG TIME today! We were in southern Illinois & I coaxed DH into stopping by the local HD. Need I say how thrilled I was to find a very nice, healthy Hoya Kentiana [I think] in a 6" basket hanging in their Garden Center!! The one and only hoya they had. My hubby was a tad bit embarassed when I did the traditional "Happy Hoya Dance" down the center isle....but he just doesn't get it. This makes addition #15 to my collection!!!! Here's a picture.......and yeah, I've already told my sis (KaBob) that she can have part of it. Been called her hoya pusher so I gotta live up to my reputation, no?

Good job! When I first glanced at the picture, I thought it was a pot filled with string beans. That's a definite "gotta have" for me because of the variation in color on the leaf edges and new growth.

Barb

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Barb....do you have this one cuz I can send you some cuttings. The basket is FULL (as you can see!). So this IS Kentiana (the "Stringbean Hoya) then, right?

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

It is kentiana, but the stringbean hoya is different. It is a minibelle, or longeria, something like that. Carol's website has some pictures of minibelle. The kentiana is different because it has the nice purple margin on the outside of the leaves. Hth.
Heather

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Some people call it H. wayettii...but it is just the clone of H. kentiana that gets red margins in the light. I love mine...it reminds me of a Beattles' Haircut!! If your pot was from EA (Exotic Angel) don't water it much....or change the soil. I am such a "jewish mother" that I simply can't stand not to water them...and the EA plants have wetting crystals in the soil that will keep it really soggy...kills plants. It is a great find.

The CIA ought to hire you to track down terrorists, Betsy...you are relentless!!!!

Hi Betsy.
No, I don't have that one as yet. I appreciate your offer. My rooting experience is essentially nil and my first attempts are now under way with some of those I just received in a shipment from Carol. Wish me luck! If I see that I'm not killing everything I will give you a shout.
Thanks again.

On this forum there is a thread I posted on propagating. Not meaning that it is the be all and the end all of information...it may help. It was way back-maybe this year. If you can't find it, let me know and I can email it to you. I find propagating very easy...and I am not a gifted person...an average bear with average intelligence...well, maybe below average.

Good mornig toAll,Question, where do I go look up differnt kind of hoyas so I can hunt for ones I dont have.................Sharon

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

Sharon, I would go to the garden watchdog.

Way to go Betsy! Our HDs never have anything "Hoya" in them. Lowes either. However, I did get my big EA plant of kentiana like yours at a Stater Bros. grocery store. Ha. Who woulda thunk it?
I love that plant. Hangs nicely from the basket & doesn't send out long searching vines that wrap around everyone else like the others. Ha.
Heather....the "stringbean" hoya is usually the one known as H. shepherdii. H. minibelle is another cv that has long leaves, but a bit wider with pinker (is that a word?) flowers. H. longifolia is another one of these "bean-leafed" hoyas, but I think it is a species on it's own (right Carol)? It has white flowers tho.
Anyway, they are all neat so just collect them ALL like I do...ha ha.

Betsy you've done it again and found a lovely hoya! Same here, I've never seen hoyas like this at our HD either. I had a piece of a long leaved hoya but lost it last year.

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Yes, you must have horse shoes around your neck Betsy, you are so lucky. lol I love the long narrow leaves but, like Donna says, I think they must be rare around here.

Thanks for passing along that information Marcy. I didn't realize there were so many different ones with those kind of leaves. I'd only heard about the H. shepherdii.

Sandy

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Yes, I have been VERY LUCKY in my newfound search! Can't believe it!
Sandy, Donna, & other Hoyas Sisters Up in the Great North...
I will start some cuttings of this plant and one way or another.....we'll get each one of you one of these to call your very own!
...and Marcy....that is my goal now...TO COLLECT EVERY ONE OF THE STRING BEANERS! =o) Heck, to collect every Hoya known to mankind! LOL
Betsy

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Thank you for your offer Betsy. Cuttings can be sent without being rooted.
:) Donna

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Marcy...that is a gorgeous H. kentiana!!! Beautiful long leaves. Yes, H. shephardii is a species all unto it's own. There is a Dischidia F-440 that grows the same way with long leaves in a bright green, and there is H. loherii that has the narrow leaf rolled in a canoe shape.

Carol

Aberdeen, NC

I always check out the plant section in any store I am in. I found a beautiful, huge basket of hoya curtsii in a grocery store. That was the first hoya I had seen in the store for several years that I have been going there. It was an EA basket. I about went into shock when I found it. I was on my way to work and just stopped in to pick up a couple of things for lunch. I came out with the hoya instead! LOL
Karen

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Uh oh Betsy....it looks like the string bean hoya list is getting longer.

I'm not familiar with Dischidias Carol. Are they related to hoyas?

Sandy

Long Beach, CA

Now that's real addiction when you sacrafice your lunch to feed your obsessions. Ha. (I would have done the same). :-)
Marcy

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

Marcy, thanks for the info. So now I need to figure out which ones I have. Awesome, more hoyas on my want list. Betsy, you are my hero. Such a warm heart. I believe you will have all hoyas know to man. Generouscity, will have great rewards.
Heather

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Betsy if'n you have a spare cutting could I be put on the waiting list? Thank you for your generosity.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Yes, Dischidias are first cousins to Hoyas...'usually' tiny or small leaves...their flowers set them apart as they are more tube shaped that star shaped...but same 'private parts' generally speaking. The flowers are in tiny clusers and generally aren't fragrant...but I love the diversity of leaves.... Here is a photo of a bunch of vines on my D. bengalensis...there are 2 different forms of leaves on the same plant...

Carol, the dischidias are neat. They are very hard to find here, but I did get one thru a trade.
:) Donna

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thank you so very, very, very much Betsy!!!! Ü
Pam

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

Yes, Betsy that is very kind of you to want to share some cuttings of your new baby. I would love to have one if you're sure you have enough. It'll be my little stringbean collection.

Thanks for the information about the Dischidias Carol. It's amazing that you can get such completely different leaves on one plant. Do the Dischidias grow as big and long as hoyas? Do they climb up the trees like your hoyas growing outside do?

Sandy

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Betsy!!! I just got a Dischidia F-440 in a shipment from Carol today so I'll start you a cutting of it. She's totally right. It looks just like your H. kentiana only it's a bright green all over. When I first opened the newspaper wrapping, I shouted, "MY STRING-BEAN PLANT!!". (Can I interject here that I had Carol ship the plants to the office?? Yeah.. good thing my co-workers tolerate my new addiction. I'm not pushing for understanding yet.. that will come in time, maybe.)
Anyway... it's a totally kewl looking thing and will look good over near your kentiana. So... scratch that one off your "gotta get" list.

:-)

Barb

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Betsy

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Barb...
I laughed out loud picturing you at work shouting that out! hahaha You are fortunate to have co-workers that tollerate your addiction. Oh it sounds PERTY!! THANK YOU for offering to start a cutting for me ~ that would be great...!
You gonna post a picture for us all to see? So we can oogle and ogle? Oh please please?
Betsy

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Noooooo don't post....can't handle anymore drooling.....lol.
;) Donna

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Okay.. I'm gonna give this a shot. This is my Dischidia F-440. I swear you could walk up to this thing, pick off a handfull of leaves and toss them in a pot of boiling, salted water and have a wonderful side dish for dinner! But I won't.. ;)

Betsy, YES, thankyouverymuch, I'd love a start of the kentiana. Great!

Carol, I got one from Cindy a couple years ago that looks very much like that. Do you know if it is the same kind?
Cindy...if your here...do you know the name of the one you sent a cutting to me of?
Marcy

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

Betsy, thanks for the offer, I actually have a kentiana, got it from home depot a year ago. Used to be bigger, but I didn't repot it, now I have it in new soil and it is doing much better! Share with the others! Another reason you are my hoya hero!
Heather

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

If it looks like that photo and has bright magenta flowers (tiny but at almost every node) then it is D. F-440. That is one of the 'happiest' plants I know (it always looks so perky and fresh!!! like H. heuschkeliana)... The internodes along the vines are bigger than H. kentiana as well!

HTH... :>)

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Carol... I know I'm showing my vast ignorance here, but what are internodes? Could that be the space between the placement of the leaves? Is there a place where I could learn basic botony? I'm having a heck of a time understanding the lingo here... like, what you call the thing the bloom forms on. Thanks!

Barb

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Thanks for asking that Barb, I would like to know what those are as well. Also, when folks discuss planting nodes, do you mean you leave the leaves on but plant the little stem between the leaf and the plant stem into the soil?
Ann

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Sure thing, Ann. I was beginning to feel a bit intimidated because I don't understand the terminology. I think the only stupid question, though, is the one that isn't asked, so I just dive right in. Shoot, if nothing else happens, I will have learned something. And that makes it a good day, right? Right!
Now... about those internodes...

Barb

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm not sure if this will help but, check out the garden terms, or botanary feature at the top of this page. That might help clear up some of the confusion. I checked for internodes and that is not in there. Ann and Barb, believe me, I'm just as confused as you two. I need very specific definitions. Like draw me a picture and put arrows on it, right! Lol!
