OK, time to confess! what bulbs did you order this fall?!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

This is a pink variegated poinsetta that has one darker pink inflorescense all one stalk tho.

that one is waaay cool! Haven't seen anything like that in my area. just standard all red, all white, or the all pink which to me looks like a faded red. me no like.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Badseed, very well said! :)

Donna, lovely poinsettias-especially the variegated, and now that I'm getting the hang of taking pics I think I can document the steps of taming the hill.
Neal

somewhere, PA

Donna - what types of things do you grow on those dry slopes?
I've got those too :-)

Michele - I lived on a little urban lot before buying my "farm". I was
the only one in the neighborhood that mowed my own grass but my
next door neighbors were a couple that really loved gardening. I
learned so much for them. On the other side, was an older woman
who let me plant on her place. It was fun but I ran out of room. Now
my veggie garden is bigger than the entire property I had in town. :-)

Tam

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Tammy, actually I don't grow anything much on the slopes that i don't have enough water to irrigate. The rainfall-snow is about 9 to 11 inches total for the year. I just had a new well, actually a drilled well going through the one that i had drilled last year and was so little water as to be useless. Long story, with my attorney daughter's help the well driller was persuaded to return enough money from his wrong water estimate to pay for another driller to make the new drill, which will I hope provide enough water for my needed irrigation.

I am really trying to cutback or at least not to plant many more plants, as all of you know for us diehard plant addicts, that is very difficult. But since i am nearly 80 years old and the doctors have told me I have angina and can't do any heavy yard work, I am really trying to lessen my work load.

I do grow quite a few xeriscape type plants, and have ordered from High Country gardens several times.

I started a new woodland garden area three years ago. Of course the trees are quite small yet so don't creat much shade.

DonnaS

somewhere, PA

Donna - I had you pegged as a 40-something for some reason. Sorry to hear
about your water woes. I think we average in 37-40" per year so that's a huge
difference! I won't even attempt to suggest anything to plant. Personally, I
refuse to grow stuff that needs a lot of water (willing to water to get shrubs &
trees going but I'm very forgetful so even they need to be pretty tough). Glad to
hear you're still gardening. My aunt kept going into her mid 90's. She could not
bend to weed so she would put a towel down and sit down. A great inspiration
to me - can't imagine not being able to enjoy this obsession!

Good luck with the angina.

I love the stuff in High Country but we've got too much moisture for many of their
plants.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Well, the 50%off clearance at Brent and Becky's finally seduced me. I've never bought bulbs this late, but I could'nt pass up the chance to get some of these goodies so cheap. I had'nt aquired all the daffodils I'd hoped, but that's fixed now! Caniculatus, Chinese Coral, Fortissimo, Golden Bells, Ice Wings, Jenny, Kaydee, Modern Art, Mon Cherie, Pink Charm, Pink Pride, Sound and Sailboat all for between 20-65cents each! Picked up hyacinths Gipsy, City of Haarlem, and Blue Jacket for 50-55cents each and Eremerus for $1.30 each. No more, and this time I really mean it! It's somehow been theraputic this fall to always have something to plant-kind of like fall is still here(technically it still is, but all of December seems like winter to me).

The lilies I'd ordered from ebay (seller:luckybusya) came Friday and the bulbs were very large and healthy. Her shipping is a bit steep, but if you don't allow yourself to get in a bidding war (no need, she usually re-lists items), you can still get better prices than other vendors for the varieties she offers.
Neal

somewhere, PA

Neal - I hope the weather holds up for you. I planted those 40% off bulbs I bought over
thanksgiving - 275 of mostly little things (alliums, chionodoxa & 25 hyacinth). I got them
all planted yesterday - it was cold but the hillside I planted was warmed in the bright sun.
This morning, we've got our first snowcover! I was getting tempted to buy more but I'll
restrain myself.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

"no more, and this time I really mean it!"

uh huh.

;-)

somewhere, PA

yeah and I really mean it this time. (Did I tell you I never do well with
New Years Resolutions?)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I got everything from Lowe's planted. I am waiting on my B&B order. We had to run some errands last night and I threw the trunk open to put bags in and guess what I find?? I still have pots in my trunk with naked bulbs in them from the other house. LOL ACK! I was *done*!! Mmmmmm hmmmmm. *done*. hahahahahaha I am looking at the ice storm out there and shiny roads and trying to figure out how to get to the other side of town so I can go back to Lowes. Yep, I have issues. ;) Oh, wait, I am going to the other side of town to work on the other house. Lowe's is just on the way. I need a few more bricks to finish the landscaping. Yeah, that's it. Just need some bricks which are outside and the bulbs are by the back door. Snicker. Giggle.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

gem-- your narcissus collection is really impressive! (Especially at such low prices--what a steal!) Can't wait to see your garden. Plan on a visit from me around the third week in April?!

Likewise, Badseed. Am most interested in seeing your new place. Maybe I can be your first customer!

The poinsetta industry has really taken off with all the hybrids. (the following info more than you will want to know about the flower, but I think it's worth mentioning! LOL.....

http://www.ecke.com/html/h_points/points_framset.html

The big CA poinsetta grower and hybridizer, Paul Ecke and his family, were instrumental in popularizing the poinsetta back in the '50s especially around Christmas time. To market the flower, they talked the set director of 'The Bob Hope Specials' and 'The Tonight Show' to always show a display on stage. Very clever. Ever since then the poinsetta became a fixture for holiday decoration. And their business skyrocketed. Of course!

Ecke had operations near us in CA. Then when we moved to Ohio I found out that the Eckes studied at Ohio State School of Agriculture, and Paul III at Denison University, in Ohio. So, Ohio had some connection with it, too.

We had the pink poinsetta in our wedding reception bouquets, thirty-three years ago on December 1. At that time they were 'new' to the market. And, Voss, they weren't as pretty as I thought they would be, but, oh, well.... I do like some of the variegated and range of hues available now. In the right interiors they look very elegant, I think.

In fact, I think I will sign off and go over to A.J. Rahn's Greenhouse, our poinsetta supplier in Cincy, and look around. LOL

somewhere, PA

well Michele - if there are some bulbs by the door to the bricks, you should
probably check to make sure they are OK. Sometimes at this time of year,
if no one "adopts" them, its curtins for them! Maybe you'll need to mount a
rescue operation... having a big heart as you do. LOL

Tam

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Judy, I certainly would not turn down a shopper! LOL

Yes Tammy, I have considered asking the bottom line if I were to buy all the bulbs. :) Of course I do not want the 50 something Amaryllis and forced bulbs. We barely have room in this house now! The others are on the far side of the houseplant section and those are fairing just well. Some were small but not dried out. They'll be fine. My wallet on the other hand.......stock for the business, that is what I keep telling us. bwah ha ha ha

Denver, CO

"No more," not I, but my Account really means it.

If I can afford an Eastern America Roadtrip this next summer, I will have to visit your gardens.

If restraint is not a characteristic of the truly insane gardener, this place is an asyllum!

Last year, Home Depot did not sell all of their bulbs, and some time in December they were a dollar a bag, and most were still in good shape. A friend and I both went nuts- A whole cart full of bulbs, and I think I paid $35! I have a picture of the place where most of those ended up when they were in bloom...
This year, we just had our first 'snow,' and B & B's order will be here tomorrow.
Kenton

We'll all be hoping for a nice warm spell to let you get those bulbs in the ground

Thanks, Tammy. And the same to everyone else on this thrad who couldn't help themselves and as a result have bulbs in the post heading for them.

almcfarla, your list gives me zone envy! Ahhhh, I would love to grow freesia, DeCaan anemone, and ranunculus.

redshiba, you'll have gorgeous mass plantings. What companions will you use with Queen of the Night(or what setting or background will be behind them)?

jlmmkm, I'm a lily fiend to. What varieties did you order? Would love to see pics when they bloom. And that's a cute helper you've got there to!
Neal

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I slobber when reading every post on here! LOL I was going to start listing what I planted/bought this year and just noticed this is at 300 replies. Think it's time for a part 2 or is this about done? ;)

somewhere, PA

Hey - the southern contingency has come to the rescue!!! More bulb-a-holics.
Don't we get to see your pictures before ours start blooming too??? can't wait!
(And what a cute little helper you have jlmmkm!)

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Badseed--why don't you start a new thread...we still have everyone's deliveries from the B and B sale to report on...and then our latest spurt of new posters will have to give us more details, too...so why not?!

And also the results of the Photo contest to report on...has everyone voted? everyone seems to ignore me on this topic!!?

go for it. t.

Denver, CO

I didn't ignore you, Tabasco. I will follow a new thread on orders, as it is a well-picked and popular subject; well done.
Kenton

San Diego, CA

I'm an addict, I ordered some Amorphophallus bulbs recently and now I can't stop, I'm addicted. lol
Mark

somewhere, PA

Now whereever did you find that! I had to google it to be sure I knew
what it was! And let us know when it blooms so we can avoid San Diego LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Okay, I started a new thread. :) http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/561042/

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL no, badseed, I meant why is no one saying they voted or entered photos in the contest!? That's how I am being 'ignored'. Or is everyone just shy about it?

I didn't mean to 'order' you to start a new thread!? Of course not! I like this thread too but if everyone is having a hard time loading it....

Are you snowed in tonight? We are. It's kind of fun! t.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey, I didn't say nuthin' about no contest. :)

We probably have 2-3 inches and it is still coming. Hubby is working in Blue Ash. I feel bad and a bit worried for his drive home. I guess he could stay at a no tell or venture to the other house.

Threads to bog down for the dial up people once they get over 100 or so. Last I looked this one had topped 300.

San Diego, CA

Tammy, lol, I know what you mean, but it isn't all bad. When they do bloom, it usually only stinks for a few hours, but when not in bloom, you have an awesome plant that almost has a minature palm like leaf and a very spotted trunk, rather cool actually, and yes, it grows from a tuber.
Mark

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Had to re-read and resurrect this thread now that everyone is ordering bulbs for 2006-2007!

Looking back on it, I can't believe everyone ordered so many bulbs.

Of course, we all enjoyed lots of great pics of the spring gardens (for 2006), didn't we?!!

Oh, dear, we joke about the 'addiction' but I think there may be some truth in it!

somewhere, PA

Just "some" truth? ROTLFMAO on that understatement!

I remember the first fall I ordered bulbs. After I planted them all, I wanted
more. I was like a maniac shopping the local nurseries, buying more bulbs,
planting them and then going back for more. Now I order so many I think
I can't possible want more once I'm done planting them all... but HAH I
find I need more more more.

Last fall I helped a friend plant her's (she was a beginner & bought something
like 600 daff's & tulips). That helped quell the urge a bit plus she gave me
a few extra's 'cause even with my help, she pooped out before they were all
planted.

Tam

Chepachet, RI(Zone 5b)

I am BRAND NEW at bulbs--the only thing I've ever done with bulbs is order them!

So I'm going to be hanging out quite a bit in this forum--I'd appreciate all the help I can get. :)

What I've ordered for this fall:

300 of these: http://www.colorblends.com/img/display/1411_frenchblendrose2.jpg

96 of these: http://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/images/252212a.jpg

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Won't that be pretty!! take lots of pics next year!

Chepachet, RI(Zone 5b)

I hope it will--since it's my first time planting them I've no idea how much damage I may or may not have from all our woodland neighbors. :)

But I will take pictures to document the glorious bulbs or the glorious disaster. :D

Lisbon, Portugal(Zone 10a)

Hi Niere! Lovely colours!

I'm going to try some bulbs for the first time too - not nearly as many as you, no more than 10 or 15... I have a small balcony!

What a feast your garden will be!

PS - just curious - how much do you pay for a bulb there, if I may ask?

Hi, MyHiraeth and Niere, booj, and Tammy--

Looks like a great collection of bulbs on order for your 2007 Spring Garden!

Actually this thread was for last year's orders though, I just resurrected it so everyone could see how many bulbs they ordered for last spring's garden --- Too many? Not enough? LOL Or somewhere in between?!

Here's the link to the new 'Order' thread for this year

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/633334/

And MyHiraeth, these are the links for the Bulb Catalogs-- 'Colorblends', White Flower Farms and John Scheeper (sister company VanEngelen for wholesale prices):

See you over at the other thread!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

It is almost too hot here for tulips to do right so I have a small bed. I plant my tulips in mid February and they are in full bloom last of March and into April it is time to dig them up and store.

I put them in storage in a cool room all summer, then into the fridge in October, plant them mid February and in Late march we get the blooms. This is my second year to see if the bulbs will bloom for me again. I`m going to plant the little bulblets I dug up to see if they grow larger.

This year I`m going to try alliums,More tulips Darwin hybrids mostly red, white and purple and a scattering of daffodils.

Lisbon, Portugal(Zone 10a)

Thanks ever so much, T.!!!
I'll check these out and get back to you on the new thread!

Love

Hiraeth
