Blue,

I used to hike a lot, mostly in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The Appalatian (sp?) Trail runs through the National Forest there. Florida is so flat!

I'm glad your husband is better.

Appalacian???

Sandy, I'm so glad you liked everything and hope it all does well for you. Please dmail me if you have any questions about anything. I'm sure that anything I have that takes full sun up here would take partial shade down there.
Don't give up hope on the back problems. It must be miserable to live with constant back pain. I'd do anything I could to make it better if it were me, regardless of what others said.
Take care,
Pixy

Steve, there must be some beautiful, wild-ish places in Florida. Can you access any of them by swimming or boating or cycling or skooter? There's a precariously high, narrow trail named after the naturalist John Muir somewhere out west that a physician was determined to travel shortly after his own hip surgery - he did it on the back of a mule with a group of people. If my own back gets much worse, I wouldn't be too embarrassed to use a wheelchair to visit a local botanic garden. As it is, we really don't hike now - we stroll because of my back issues.

I don't know if I'm being helpful or not here - some of our parks are wheelchair accessible - Florida seems an ideal place for that.

Diane, would research assistant or editing or writing grants be possibilities? You'd need a university or publishing house nearby for the first two positions. I have a neighbor with two degrees - 1 in English and the 2nd in nursing - so she has carved out a niche editing medical journals from home. If she had to, she could do it from a laptop in bed. Finding jobs that allow one to work out of home, possibly on a laptop in bed, are hard to find.

Wish I had better suggestions. I hope we keep in touch, too - this is turning into quite a supportive thread.

Blue,

There are some beautiful parks here in FLA - full of wildlife.

The funny thing about my back is that when I walk on uneven terrain - up and down - it actually helps relieve the pain. I went on a three day hike, over several 5000+ foot mountains, and felt great.

A very good physical therapist I knew said that she knew why - she tried to explain it to me, something about compression, but it was way over my head.

The exact opposite is true on flat terrain. After walking a quarter mile or so, I'm thinking Barcolounger. And, as we all know, Florida is soooooo flat.

I really miss those mountains.

That, coupled with the fact that DW isn't much interested in being a hiking lady, is why I put so much energy into gardening now.

Hello all,
I had the MRI of my thoracic and lumbar spine yesterday and being on that table for such a long period of time was not a good thing. I did not think I was going to make it through the last two or three sets of films. But got through it, and then had to see my boss there at the hospital to drop off paperwork and let her know what's up with me, and then had to pick up my dog from her beauty shop and pick up some groceries. That was a lot for only my second time driving since my surgery. I was hurting so much by the time I got home that I only brought in the groceries that had to go into the fridge/freezer, and then hit the pills and the recliner. I am so anxious to see my doctor again next week. I really only can do one project per day. I can walk around in the house or the yard all I want and I have figured out to be in the recliner and still read or knit. But going out on an excursion is just horrendous later.

Every time I think about my back, I pray for those on this thread also having back problems. I know that God has a plan for all of us. Thank you for your prayers on my behalf.
